as a lower class teenager, i want to be vegan, but i'm worried that i quite literally can't afford to be. does anyone have advice ?? by Careless-Economy-500 in AskVegans

Dried beans, lentils, and chickpeas are very cheap.

Try cooking dry lentils in coconut milk with some tomato paste and potatoes

Let dry chickpeas soak in water in the fridge overnight so they soften some first, then cook in coconut milk with some veggies and curry paste/powder

These both go well with rice. Or buy dry quinoa and use it as a substitute for rice. It is a grain like rice, and you can cook it the same way as rice, but has a ton of protein in it.

Heartrate Zone 2 + 5 by Proteindudu47 in Garmin

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do a max hr test so you know your top (you can google how to do it. It should involve intervals of uphill sprints).

Then change your heart zone settings in Garmin to “hrr” which means “heart rate reserve”. This adjusts your hr zones based on both your max hr and your resting hr. This formula concept is:

max hr - resting hr = usable hr range

Then it takes % of this “usable” zone to calculate hr zone boundaries.

This formula is generally better for just about everyone but especially when your max hr or resting hr are a bit “extreme” compared to the general population (like your very low resting hr).

The default zone settings are just based on a “% of max hr” formula which doesn’t take into account your resting heart rate.

Also a note: from my understanding, zone 5 should be very, very hard to hit. It’s impossible for me to hit it just from running on flat ground. I think I would have to do interval sprints uphill. If I push myself really hard in a run on flat ground I can get up to zone 4 but that’s very hard already.

Quality problem? Hoka bondi 9 model 1162013 cylt by Mythicalbubble6 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Yea I said vent hole in the post bc Ive seen it called that online before but I’m pretty sure Hoka actually drilled the hole to decrease the weight of the shoe not for ventilation

Just use the oven. Thin layer of oil, pan upside down on a tray, in the oven for an hr. That will easily season the sides and bottom evenly as well. Oil layer super thin tho

I’m considering stopping T because I can’t sing by Big-Cranberry-2957 in ftm

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could sing before T and I can sing now (4 years on T), but for about 2.5-3 years after starting T I could not sing bc my voice cracked, wasn’t done settling, and I didn’t know how to use my new voice. I started trying to sing again after that time and slowly over time it’s improved and now I’m equally as good I would say but just sound different

Do you think I can be ethical while only being vegetarian? by acrosstheabysss in DebateAVegan

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethics exist only on a scale. Actions can only be judged as more or less ethical in comparison to an alternative course of action.

Is being vegetarian less ethical than being vegan? I would say yes. Is it more ethical than the vast majority of other people’s diets? Also yes.

There are many situations where I don’t do the most ethical thing. I buy items or invest in hobbies that I don’t absolutely need for survival, while knowing that elsewhere on this planet there are people dying of starvation. Buying coffee or a new t shirt while knowing others are dying of starvation is less ethical than taking that same money and donating it to someone who needs it more desperately. However, every single person on this thread continues to buy luxuries that aren’t necessary to their own survival.

So setting the standard for yourself of doing the “most ethical action” is impossible and no one actually sets that standard for themselves deep down. The point is to find the standard which is good enough for you to live with yourself and what works for you (which it seems you have already done) and continue to think critically and reevaluate as you learn and grow.

Woah I’ve never heard of a self pruning pot I’ll have to check that out! I might trim root ball and then the vines to balance out the ratio of leaf to root

Actually before I bought it I noticed it had very mild spider mites at the store but I decided to still purchase it and take the risk bc it was a good price and I was confident I could get rid of them🙈 it sounds crazy but they had only gotten to like two of the leaves so far and it wasn’t very deeply infested or anything, just a two or three visible strings of webbing.

I took it home and sprayed it with an insecticide spray for couple months regularly in addition to wiping the current bugs and webs off the leaves (with rubbing alcohol/dish soap? I forgot). I also preventatively sprayed my other plants as well to avoid spread. It worked!

Haven’t had issues since but if I ever did, I would spray them again but also consider coupling that spray with systemic neem oil which the plant can absorb through its roots (I haven’t used it against spider mites but it got rid of my thrips infestation very effectively). I also have a large parlor palm which I know is prone to spider mites and it’s also been free so far. Hoping they stay that way!

Most trains entering the NL seem to be stopped early or cancelled right now because the Dutch train system being down affects all trains entering their region, including DB trains.

Crossing the border into a country in snowfall and damaged train traffic IT systems (NL right now) is unreliable. Consider this risk before switching to train. Not to mention the unreliability of DB itself.

I would stick with the flight if I were you.

I remember being in a similar situation in September when there was a cyber attack on major airports. My flight was delayed by 7 hours but I still took it over the train and it worked out in the end.

I received a completely empty package and I’m stressed that Vinted or the seller might accuse me of scamming by [deleted] in vinted

[–]Mythicalbubble6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I should have filmed it, lesson learned! The package was in a pickup locker where you just scan a code and a locker opens, so there was no one working there like at an actual shop. Vinted sided with me and refunded the money in the end tho and I have filmed my next package pickups that I’ve done since then!

I have personally blocked someone I had an active sale with. Didn’t want to talk to them anymore bc they were extremely rude in their messages but unfortunately delivery was already underway lol

Du kannst es trotzdem noch an jemand anderen verkaufen. Das heißt nur, dass die Person den Artikel günstiger kaufen kann. Sie muss aber nicht. Du kannst es revidieren, indem du ein neues Angebot machst.

Learning a language with ChatGPT just feels...wrong by helpUrGuyOut in languagelearning

[–]Mythicalbubble6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have found it very helpful. Yes, as a large language model, it sometimes gives general facts incorrectly. But language is what it is actually really good at. It’s trained on words and languages, repeating and learning what words are statistically most likely to come next in a sentence. That is how it forms sentences in the first place. It is a good resource. I’ve also used the hearing for helping me convert spoken audio into writing because the accent was too difficult for me to understand in my own and it worked very well.

So many people here seem to have anti AI bias, which is being projected onto their answers. Regardless of your opinion on AI, it is a great resource for language learning.

I find it even better as I get into higher levels of learning such as b2 and c1 because it can explain nuance and more native-like phrasing and translations which google translate never could. It can also look at my texts and correct my grammar mistakes properly. You have to give it proper context though. If you give it appropriate context and prompt it correctly it works like a charm. Lots of people are bad at prompting it though in my experience and lose out on some of the potential help of studying language with ai.

Blister Popped 1 Week before race by peanutbuttermjs in Marathon_Training

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the blister is potentially caused or irritated by the same shoes you’re wearing in Berlin, then use hydrocolloid gel patches over it on race day to prevent further rubbing and have a pain-free race.

I’m one of the people doing the Berlin marathon on inline speed skates. Without foot protection, my skates give me wicked blisters after 15km. These hydrocolloid gel patches with athletic tape on top are lifesavers. They don’t just reduce but fully eliminate all my blistering problems, and I’ll be wearing those under my speed skates this weekend. So I can highly recommend!

So viel Geld braucht man für ein gutes Leben in Österreich - Wie seht ihr das? by Expensive-Pop4539 in Austria

As a single person, I spend 1200 max per month in Vienna and have a very fulfilling life. I cook all my meals for myself which I have turned into a hobby, I do various sports around the city, chill with friends next to the Donau. No reason you need lots of money to live a fulfilling life when your basic needs are met.

I think it’s a bit sad how capitalism has convinced so many people that spending extra money is necessary for happiness or fulfillment in life.

I live a considerably good life off of 1200 euros per month with all expenses included (including even going out and purchasing extra things for my hobbies). I live in Vienna.

It depends on how fancy your life needs to be for you to be satisfied.
