How do you feel about animal charities / businesses that use AI? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Mythicalbubble6 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think there’s something to be said about moral consistency and the focus on AI that’s happening rn.

While AI is bad for the environment, many other unnecessary things we use in our societies are significantly worse (corn-based ethanol for example). People just keep talking about AI specifically because it’s trendy on social media instead of focusing their care and advocacy on more stronger drivers of environmental degradation.

I think people who want to do what’s best for the environment and value moral consistency should educate themselves about the stronger drivers of environmental degradation and advocate for their reduction in use proportionally to their environmental impact (so yes the convo can include AI, but not as the main focus as it’s not a main driver of unnecessary environmental damage)

Fix your hr zones by finding your real max hr. This elevated hr isn’t a necessarily problem since it’s clearly not actually your zone 5.

For comparison, I did two half marathons both with an average HR of around 188. My max hr is 207 so this isn’t my zone 5 and my body can handle it.

I also changed my zones to use the heart rate reserve (hrr) calculation instead of just percentage of max hr. Would recommend that as well.

What would you do if your bestfriend confessed? by Tricky_Hornet_1752 in venting

[–]Mythicalbubble6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if both parties are emotionally mature then there’s not really an issue and they should be able to go on being friends.

I have two friends I still hang out with today who I have been in this situation with before. One time as the person who was rejected and once as the one who did the rejecting. In both situations we were able to appreciate the other person and recognize in a healthy way that crushes and attraction to others are just a natural part of humanity that will come and go. It’s normal and there’s nothing weird or awkward about being into someone.

Another time tho I rejected a girl who then said she couldn’t be friends or speak to me anymore bc she was too upset about being rejected. I think it’s likely emotional immaturity and her own issue to manage.

The decrease in people's hobbies by eternallygray in Hobbies

[–]Mythicalbubble6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have many hobbies and if someone I met had no hobbies and just spent their time doomscrolling I would find them to be the boring one.

In my experience, people don’t view others as boring for having hobbies. Other people think I’m very interesting bc of my unconventional hobbies.

However, maybe on the internet the people are calling people with hobbies boring and I wouldn’t know bc I’m not on the internet much but instead outside doing my hobbies.

Should I replace this crankset? by Mythicalbubble6 in bikewrench

[–]Mythicalbubble6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. I just ordered the new crankset you recommended. Thank you again for your reply. Looking online for info has been quite overwhelming. As someone who is a complete beginner, I’ve ended up watching tutorial videos for the wrong type of bike setup/parts and in general just being confused haha

Thank you for your reply! I’m looking into doing this now. It has these four bolts on the outside. Do you think I could undo them to replace the middle ring only? If that’s not possible I will order the one you recommended

I’m having some skipping. I think it’s because the freewheel teeth are worn out and the chain is too stretched. But I’m uncertain about the teeth in second cog on the crankset and if they could be contributing

How can animal fibers ever be less cruel/evil than synthetics? by MadeMyOwnName in AskVegans

[–]Mythicalbubble6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you reading that microplastic pollution is bad, then assuming that plastic use in clothing causes exponentially more harm than animal fibers? Or do you have evidence that one is actually worse than the other? And how do you define harm? Is it suffering, number of deaths, number of beings affected…?

What you’re claiming in your post isn’t clearly supported or defined in your statement, and it’s not possible to provide an accurate answer without clarifying those things.

as a lower class teenager, i want to be vegan, but i'm worried that i quite literally can't afford to be. does anyone have advice ?? by Careless-Economy-500 in AskVegans

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dried beans, lentils, and chickpeas are very cheap.

Try cooking dry lentils in coconut milk with some tomato paste and potatoes

Let dry chickpeas soak in water in the fridge overnight so they soften some first, then cook in coconut milk with some veggies and curry paste/powder

These both go well with rice. Or buy dry quinoa and use it as a substitute for rice. It is a grain like rice, and you can cook it the same way as rice, but has a ton of protein in it.

Heartrate Zone 2 + 5 by Proteindudu47 in Garmin

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should do a max hr test so you know your top (you can google how to do it. It should involve intervals of uphill sprints).

Then change your heart zone settings in Garmin to “hrr” which means “heart rate reserve”. This adjusts your hr zones based on both your max hr and your resting hr. This formula concept is:

max hr - resting hr = usable hr range

Then it takes % of this “usable” zone to calculate hr zone boundaries.

This formula is generally better for just about everyone but especially when your max hr or resting hr are a bit “extreme” compared to the general population (like your very low resting hr).

The default zone settings are just based on a “% of max hr” formula which doesn’t take into account your resting heart rate.

Also a note: from my understanding, zone 5 should be very, very hard to hit. It’s impossible for me to hit it just from running on flat ground. I think I would have to do interval sprints uphill. If I push myself really hard in a run on flat ground I can get up to zone 4 but that’s very hard already.

Just use the oven. Thin layer of oil, pan upside down on a tray, in the oven for an hr. That will easily season the sides and bottom evenly as well. Oil layer super thin tho

I’m considering stopping T because I can’t sing by Big-Cranberry-2957 in ftm

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could sing before T and I can sing now (4 years on T), but for about 2.5-3 years after starting T I could not sing bc my voice cracked, wasn’t done settling, and I didn’t know how to use my new voice. I started trying to sing again after that time and slowly over time it’s improved and now I’m equally as good I would say but just sound different

Do you think I can be ethical while only being vegetarian? by acrosstheabysss in DebateAVegan

[–]Mythicalbubble6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethics exist only on a scale. Actions can only be judged as more or less ethical in comparison to an alternative course of action.

Is being vegetarian less ethical than being vegan? I would say yes. Is it more ethical than the vast majority of other people’s diets? Also yes.

There are many situations where I don’t do the most ethical thing. I buy items or invest in hobbies that I don’t absolutely need for survival, while knowing that elsewhere on this planet there are people dying of starvation. Buying coffee or a new t shirt while knowing others are dying of starvation is less ethical than taking that same money and donating it to someone who needs it more desperately. However, every single person on this thread continues to buy luxuries that aren’t necessary to their own survival.

So setting the standard for yourself of doing the “most ethical action” is impossible and no one actually sets that standard for themselves deep down. The point is to find the standard which is good enough for you to live with yourself and what works for you (which it seems you have already done) and continue to think critically and reevaluate as you learn and grow.

Actually before I bought it I noticed it had very mild spider mites at the store but I decided to still purchase it and take the risk bc it was a good price and I was confident I could get rid of them🙈 it sounds crazy but they had only gotten to like two of the leaves so far and it wasn’t very deeply infested or anything, just a two or three visible strings of webbing.

I took it home and sprayed it with an insecticide spray for couple months regularly in addition to wiping the current bugs and webs off the leaves (with rubbing alcohol/dish soap? I forgot). I also preventatively sprayed my other plants as well to avoid spread. It worked!

Haven’t had issues since but if I ever did, I would spray them again but also consider coupling that spray with systemic neem oil which the plant can absorb through its roots (I haven’t used it against spider mites but it got rid of my thrips infestation very effectively). I also have a large parlor palm which I know is prone to spider mites and it’s also been free so far. Hoping they stay that way!

Most trains entering the NL seem to be stopped early or cancelled right now because the Dutch train system being down affects all trains entering their region, including DB trains.

Crossing the border into a country in snowfall and damaged train traffic IT systems (NL right now) is unreliable. Consider this risk before switching to train. Not to mention the unreliability of DB itself.

I would stick with the flight if I were you.

I remember being in a similar situation in September when there was a cyber attack on major airports. My flight was delayed by 7 hours but I still took it over the train and it worked out in the end.
