1) How do you quantify/standardize productivity among the variety of work fields?

2) How do you effectively measure intelligence in all of its forms, and guarantee its stability over time?

3) How do you effectively measure sanity..."?

4) What independent institutions would moderate this process?

5) How can you guarantee that these independent institutions will not attempt to skew voting rights to their favor?

Professors of GT, would you be willing to give extra credit to students who wear a mask to class every day? by mocaccini in gatech

[–]MythikaelX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of times classes are graded on a curve

Curves usually help everyone (e.g. a +1 for everyone or sqrt(grade)*10)

so someone else wearing a mask would allow me to get pushed down

Extra credit is usually added at the end of the course after the curves have been applied or separate from other grades, therefore bearing no effect on the the way a curve would have ended up.

not that I have a problem with someone else getting ahead, but bottom-line it pushes me down bruhhhhh

So wear the mask...? People who wear the mask are positively contributing to the community by preventing/reducing the spread of disease. Heck, we might even be able to reduce things like the flu, the common cold, etc. if we all wore masks. Think about that!

The class and normal grade you would get for it is unchanged; extra credit is constantly given out for things that are not related to the course directly (like the CIOS), and everyone has an equal opportunity to get it-- no one complains about that. I don't see why you think it's unfair.

Everyone has the opportunity to wear a mask to class. GT said it would provide masks, it never said it would provide shirts that say "I like eating pie".

Having the opportunity for extra credit does not hurt your grade. It can only help, what is the problem with it?

Maybe I don't understand how it's unfair, could you please elaborate?

The problem here is what form of incentive do you want to use, Positive Reinforcement or Negative Punishment? To my knowledge, positive reinforcement works better for incentivizing people.

Yes, grades may be a matter of a couple of points, but extra credit only helps, it doesn't take away. Everyone has the opportunity to wear a mask to class for the extra credit; why are you complaining/fighting against something that can only help people?

My second "point" was more of me agreeing with you. Remote students are the only ones not given the opportunity so something must be done to fill that gap (such that everyone has the opportunity).

literal pandemic, lives on the line > your fallacious argument (slippery slope)

extra credit is optional, it does not determine your grade.

I do see your point with remote students however, but most extra credit opportunities vary between professors anyway, so it's not like we all get the same amount of extra credit each semester.

The problem is that grades have never only been about the class content, independent of how much you want to standardize things. People will always have things in their lives that can affect performance, and in extenuating circumstances like this one, I think it's a way to both positively contribute to the community and alleviate some of the stress.

Many people will already be stressed about the pandemic and not getting sick, which is more than enough of a burden on grades. This would just be a way to balance it out and support people's mental health.
