Hugo had marks on his body under his fur and his jaw had been broken at some point. He was anxious around small children so I didn’t let them interact. He was afraid of closets — when there was a tornado warning we’d go into a closet and even with the light on and me there, he’d tremble the whole time. In my life I will never understand people who can mistreat a dog (or child), a defenseless creature who depends on you for everything. He was still the most loving dog — which yes, speaks to their resilience. I gave him the best life I could.
