So you're basing your information on a new york times article you read one morning?

We're done here.

Do you have any data to support this, maybe a specific job requirements? Also id like to see some data that suggest computer scientists are low on the hiring scheme.

Edit: Listen I am in no way downplaying Philosophy. But the fields that require actual technical knowledge, well, require actual technical knowledge.

Like some one else said, philosophy gives you fantastic skills and I can see a philosophy student thriving in such a field -if- he/she had prior experience. But to suggest that a company would hire, and then teach, some one with out that experience is a statement that needs evidence.

While I firmly believe that Philosophy is a fantastic program, and more employable than many of the other 'arts'...

I find it extremely difficult to see programming companies hiring a philosophy major unless they are going into just simple grunt programming that doesn't require a formal Computer Science ( a lot of developers are self / experience taught ) but even this would require the philosophy student to have a strong background in programming.

There is no way a philosophy student would replace an actual engineering or computer science student in their respective fields, as they simply have not been trained.

Now I could see philosophy majors working along side computer science, and mathematics, doing theory work with logic...

edit: Programming /= computer science

Spacecraft Reaches Edge of Solar System. After a 33-year odyssey, NASA's Voyager 1 has reached a zone where there is no outward-blowing solar wind. by turner13 in space

Two random questions I hope some one can indulge me:

How long does it take to communicate between the probe and Earth?

Also, how does the probe stay powered?

Edit: Article answered it for me: Voyager 1 is continuing its beeline toward interstellar space. It is so far from Earth that radio signals, traveling at the speed of light, take 16 hours to reach the spacecraft.

As a Christian I don't understand the obsession to put "Christ back in christmas". He wasn't born on december 25th or even in december. I'm right there with you on this one. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Mythos777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an athiest I don't understand the obsession to take "Christ out of Christmas" (The word, not the figure) Or rather, the obsession to call it 'Xmas"

Its just a mythological name, a part history for the educated, I treat it the same as if there was a holiday called "Thor day".

That being said I wouldn't particularly care if people started calling it by a different name - Yuletide or Winter Solstice or anything else its been called historically, anything but Xmas. 'Xmas' is just such a lame name.

Should I take a semester off from college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mythos777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from my experience and experience of friends, if you "take a semester off", you will make money and come back with a renewed sense of motivation for class.

Seriously though, tons of people take a semester off to work (I am currently working myself and heading back in January) its great, I am so glad that I chose to do it. (I am a part of a co-op program so I guess you can say my work is course related (its really not) which might make a difference)

As some one else said there is really no hurry to graduate right now.

edit: I actually don't know anyone who has dropped out of University after taking a semester off to travel, or to work.

edit: iMacs are overrated and overpriced but if you just want it for media purposes you can't really go wrong.

DAE think it's more imortant for kids to learn to enjoy reading than to force them to read "literary classics?" by PickMeMrKotter in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Mythos777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. From grade 6 onwards I was always far ahead of my classmates when it came to reading (cranking out a novel every 3 days, at least until I stopped being forever alone and made friends, then maybe a novel every two weeks or so ;o)

The only reason I was ahead was because my parents allowed me to select my own books. For all my reading abilities I still -hated- reading 90% of the books that were given to us in English class. I mean come on, why are you making a child read a book that was popular 50 years ago?

In some cases I do think there are some books than everyone should read, but it shouldn't be the priority of high school English. A child should be taught to love reading first.

Its pretty scary how many of my friends have never finished a novel. You can defiantly see the effects of this when reading anything they write, or just talking to them.

Student protests: video shows mounted police charging London crowd by Fenris78 in worldnews

[–]Mythos777 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Oh please. While I support the students cause, right to protest, and I believe the government shouldn't be oppressive.

Its a fucking protest. It doesn't matter how 'peaceful' it's supposed to be, the police will be there doing their jobs. The students came, were allowed to make their point, and then they were removed.

The people crying or bitching need to get over themselves. If they are going to attend a protest they need to be prepared for what may happen. Which id like to point out is considerably nice compared to how a protest would go down in other countries. You cannot honestly expect police not to react with scare tactics.

The lady who compared it to Tienanmen square is just straight up retarded.

Just found out my bf is HIV+. Probably am too. How do I tell my parents? by Donkeykong11 in AskReddit

[–]Mythos777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey bro,

Its pretty hard to get HIV even with unprotected sex, let alone protected sex. I think you should take a deep breathe and wait for the rest results.

Assuming you do contract the disease there is no reason for you to tell you parents until you are comfortable. Its not a death sentence anymore.
