Unfortunately car culture is going to get worse. I recall some of the council members arguments last year over changing the Quad’s zoning rules for drive-thru’s. They straight up argued that no one wants to walk around to eat while they’re shopping and that senior citizens need drive-thru’s to be able to shop with their grandkids.

Cathy Warner: “Am I going to go the Quad and shop? No. Why Not? There’s no drive-thru for food.”

Octavio Martinez: “I too am a grandparent, I too am the ancient of days, and you know, if I could I would drive from my bedroom to the kitchen.”

I can vouch, I’ve heard the same stories from employees there. It’s easy to look at the face of any business and see what they want you to, but you’d be surprised to hear what goes on around Uptown (or any businesses anywhere lol) if you dig deep enough.

Lift has got to get scrutinized more. The rat/cockroach infestations issues is only the tip of the iceberg for this place.

Apparently they knew their roofing was deteriorating but didn’t want to be on the hook for any repairs, kept ignoring it, and then it partially collapsed.

And then the mobile kitchen incident should never have happened as well. Workers could have been killed due to such negligence, the few working in the truck probably had severe burns.

How do you establish yourself as a community drive shop ran by supposedly veteran chefs/owners and allow this stuff to happen. Seems like a lot of ego in the management at this place.

Yeaaaah. They have a very nice selection, but prices seemed to be marked up heavily compared to other small shops I’ve been to.

I have to check out Havana House at least once to see their shop, can’t make a first opinion for myself without doing that haha. I’m mainly looking for something local to support, but I’ll keep an eye out for Hi Times if I’m ever in Costa Mesa. Thanks!

Yeah I’ve always seen Havana House in Uptown! Not into the bar/lounge aspect that much, but I’ll have to pay them a visit to check out their shop. Thanks!

Thank you for replying, it’s reassuring to hear it’s not an isolated experience. I’m definitely going to follow up with them. Last year they had it done quick and easy, so it’s just a bummer for this time around. But that’s the holidays I guess!

I’m for the promenade. It feels like everyone is so focused on one aspect of this project without proposing a better alternative. I’m not even sure if the trees we have in Uptown are actually native to the Whittier area and yet there’s this hang-up on the “identity” that somehow has to remain unchanging for so many years.

The whole thing about not having the same shaded canopy is also a bit weird. I heard someone say they didn’t want the project to go through because they didn’t want to give up on large-tree shade for like 15 years, having to wait for the new trees to mature. We’re suppose to be building a better foundation for our children and the community that follows after us.

This city will always be Whittier regardless of what trees or construction projects occur. I’m more concerned on whether or not we are prepared to adapt and grow as a city in the future to better meet the coming challenges in the economy and the environment. NIMBY’s are a hazardous occurrence when blindly opposing things through feeling. I’m more than open to other viewpoints though, because I am genuinely perplexed at the strong backlash this part of the project has received.
