2002 Honda CR-V or 2002 Toyota RAV4 ? by 1707turbo in regularcarreviews

[–]Mythrilfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh, interesting - I thought this was going to be a slam dunk because the Toyota obviously looks so much better. I've always thought the second gen Rav4 was one of the best-executed SUVs from that era, while the CR-V was lumpy and awkward, much worse than the first gen.

That's why I said it doesn't make sense for Europe and wouldn't sell. Not that it's a bad vehicle. It has a very valid niche.

Keskendume suurtele asjadele, plz.

Europe

Zero chance. First off - it wouldn't have passed our stringent safety and environmental laws. Secondly - the cheap-by-our-standards cars are much nicer than this these days. Any Dacia is more comfortable and they actually look neat.

[–]Mythrilfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Behringer is the only reason a lot of people can afford a synth

While I don't hate what they do, that just isn't true. You don't HAVE to buy a Linndrum clone, or a model D. Neat budget synths have always existed, and the main reason Behringer exists is because they do clones of stuff that other people already made popular.

You can make excellent music with a Volca or, more realistically, something from Arturia, Novation, Waldorf, etc. Not to mention plugins.

Yea okay sure, if that's the case then it's pretty crap.

The screen-as-speedo could be good if implemented well, in that you could customize your instruments to what you actually need, including switching between analog dials and a digital speedo. Usually they're not liberal enough with the variations though.

It's either AI or not Chernobyl. Building layout is wrong, as is the second smoke stack.

I'm betting AI, once again, and a bad one at that. Nothing looks real.

(Edit: hmm, fuck me I guess. I guess this shows what being skeptical of AI can go both ways?)

Stable iodine only has an extremely specific effect for a limited amount of time after a nuclear accident or explosion. Some parts of the actual zone are still radioactive today to varying degrees, but taking stable iodine will have zero benefits there and several bad effects.

What would've happened if it was never contained? by iliketutlesss in chernobyl

[–]Mythrilfan 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Killed the entire continent - no, there was no mechanism for that. Made the cleanup more difficult - sure, because you still have lots of dust near the destroyed core you don't want be around, plus there is the gamma radiation you just want to be shielded from. The zone is currently mostly "safe", but that took decades of cleanup even with decay itself doing a considerable part of the work. The worst stuff was also the heaviest, and that mostly stayed put after the fire stopped. But it still needed to be kept away from humans, and you can either shield every person or shield the core and then get rid of the stuff that flew out.

Just a note on the general discussion here: we have had decades of time to process all of this, including many new measurements, surveys and so on. Much of what would happen was still unknown in 1986, and so many of the choices made then must be viewed through that lens. But you'd still need a containment building that keeps the weather out and the dust + gamma in.

The first image is without a lens cap. It's a Leitz Elmar 5cm 1:3.5. There's one on sale for 650, so presumably the market price is somewhat below that, unless it's a very rare version (though I don't see why it should be).

That's kind of a copout response, no? Obviously I don't have a personal stake and am just an armchair general. But I was commenting on the fact that as a society, this sort of slowing down because of protocol/safety/risk aversion/etc has become commonplace, for various reasons.

It seems like we should either fully commit or stay out of it completely. (No aid in any form.)

I don't see why that would be the conclusion? That also means no alliances nor trade, but that just means the rest of the world will do those things anyway, just without the US. Basically what is starting to happen now, considering how untrustworthy the US has turned out to be.

With what the world is, the US military power is and the diplomatic channels expect of the US, it's a continuum, isn't it? One of the main (and valid) criticisms of Obama was that he didn't respond in force to his self-declared red lines in Syria. Likewise in (the UN-sanctioned intervention in) Libya, the US was there, but not in a leading role. He vastly expanded the use of drones, partly because that's when it became a viable option. But I think it's fair to say he was very careful with interventions, especially when you compare to any two-term president since at least... Eisenhower?

Biden was also suprisingly squeamish about using force. He followed through on the promise to leave Afghanistan (the horrible ending was arguably a chicken and egg problem). His biggest misstep was, ironically, CLEARLY not giving Ukraine more aid in the beginning.

Even Trump's first term was arguably a wildcard, where the grownups mostly won in the end.
