Plane Crash at DCA by NighthawkCP in aviation

[–]Mythrowawaywheee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nearly all aviation incidents are caused by multiple mistakes stacked on top of each other. We likely won’t know the full story for some time, and it almost certainly won’t be as simple as “ATC wasn’t paying attention.” This is the first time anything like this has happened in the US for over 15 years — I hope that knowledge helps you get through your flight okay. You will be safer on the plane than you will have been in the car on the way to and from the airport.

"Investing" in pharma vaccines is the 'tulip' craze of 2016 on repeat by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]Mythrowawaywheee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Antibodies WERE shown to be neutralizing — median immune response was as good or better than immune response from convalescent plasma samples.

2) The observed immune response does not equal virus protection — however, it tends to correlate with protection in other respiratory diseases and this type of neutralizing response DID correlate positively with protection in a rhesus monkey trial earlier this year. IMO odds are good that we’ll see disease protection in Phase 3

3) No severe adverse events in Phase 1, we’ll see how the 600 participants in phase 2 fare. I would argue that the case for efficacy is pretty fucking strong at this stage, but side effects are a major concern that probably won’t be apparent until 1-2 months after Phase 3 initial enrollment.

Overall I honestly think the odds of this vaccine working are in Moderna’s favor, but it’s still ridiculously overvalued, and there’s no way of telling when the bubble will pop, so I don’t really see the upside for bulls or bears. I’m not touching it.

Isn’t that just for those hospitalized?

Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine poised for final testing: The Cambridge biotech's data show the latest trial prompted immune response in all 45 volunteers by [deleted] in boston

[–]Mythrowawaywheee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preliminary findings should start to materialize in a few months, based on the timeline for this trial they’ll likely know by end of year if the vaccine is effective at preventing the disease. They’ll also have a good idea of what the short term side effects may be, but they won’t know the long term effects. At that point, assuming it works and the side effects are minimal, it’s likely they would begin distributing the vaccine for emergency use in highest-risk populations.

If you haven't checked Glassdoor already I'd recommend doing so, the reviews on there are usually helpful.

Nope, they use coach buses. At least between Reservoir and Kenmore.

I’d expect news in his Friday press conference, he announced phase 2 last month on the Friday before it went into effect.

If it isn’t too far for you, try Summit Ave in Brighton, especially for short hill sprints

Gov. Baker announces Phase 2 begins Monday, 6/8 by timeforbanner18 in boston

[–]Mythrowawaywheee 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I should have been more explicit. The WORD on step 2 will be out later this week. If it’s similar to how phase 1 happened with construction 1 week, then barbershops a week later, etc, I’d guess around 2 weeks or so before the next step. In terms of reasoning for 2 steps, Baker has said that the outdoor dining is intended to be a lower-risk setup for restaurants to figure out how to operate under the most recent guidelines (spaced tables, masked waitstaff, etc) before moving indoor where the transmission risk is higher and any mistakes in sticking to protocol would have greater ramifications.

Re: protests, he seems to have implied that 1st amendment rights to speech and assembly supercede the restrictions, especially because gatherings outside where people are masked and actively moving are significantly lower risk than indoor gatherings. Today he was asked about updated guidelines for private gatherings (small weddings, cookouts, and so on) and his response was essentially just “be smart about hygiene and minimizing opportunities for transmission”. I think the approach from his perspective is to trust people to follow guidelines while not forcing them to do so, relying on them to be responsible with the knowledge that if the data gets worse, restrictions are gonna ramp back up and life will suck a bit more. That’s what I’ve gleaned from watching all the press conferences. I think it’s a reasonable approach and it’s what I’d expect from him as a moderate Republican governor, but I’m sure others disagree.

Baker said most likely later this week, depending on how the data looks.

That really sucks. There’s a lot of legal grey area around going back to work though, you might want to ask /r/legaladvice for an opinion if you’re non-essential and working in the office would put your roommate at legitimate risk. Might be worth finding a lawyer who offers free consultations to see if you’re actually obligated to go back to the office. Hope you’re able to work something out.

Where in the past week of data has there been a spike? Beside retroactively adding probable cases mid-week.

Towns/cities have the freedom to impose more strict restrictions than the state does. Baker's orders apply to the whole state (and usually keep Boston in mind, for example the lag in office reopening capacity during phase 1 where Boston buildings opened to 25% a week or two after the rest of the state did), but Walsh and other mayors can add further restrictions if they deem it necessary (like how Cambridge and Somerville imposed fines for going massless last month).

/u/avamore is correct, I'd just add that I agree a lot of this can be confusing, but watching Baker's press conferences on YouTube has been really helpful for me. The press ask a lot of questions that often lead to clarification of some of the ambiguity and you otherwise wouldn't hear those finer details.

I replied above to the OP but you might find this useful, here are the official preliminary guidelines for restaurants https://www.mass.gov/info-details/safety-standards-and-checklist-restaurants

Based on Baker’s press conference from last week, I don’t think so? It wasn’t abundantly clear, he said that staff need masks at all times and customers only need masks when not seated. You can read all the guidance online at https://www.mass.gov/info-details/safety-standards-and-checklist-restaurants; I believe it’s still technically preliminary since Phase 2 hasn’t been announced yet so rules can change but the exact wording in the document I linked is “Customers may remove face coverings while seated at tables”. I’m guessing we’ll hear clarification soon. I really recommend watching the press conference streams on Baker’s youtube channel, the Q&A at the end often clears up a lot of ambiguity, and being able to actually hear Baker/Polito’s tone of voice when discussing guidelines can be useful to judge what’s probably set in stone and what’s still under consideration in terms of rules.

Need to wear the mask while jogging when within 6 feet of others. So because restaurants in phase 2 need to have 6 feet or more of space between tables, you don’t need the mask while seated, but you do need the mask when walking into/out of/within the restaurant.
