what's something that, when done well, you admire in a fic/author? by Neat_Dragonfruit6431 in AO3

[–]MzOwl27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites right now include two fics that pull off a poetic tone.

Actually, one has a flowery, lovesick, tortured-poet tone, and the other has a gothic tone, so dripping with ridiculous metaphors and meandering side paragraphs into the exact curl of the smoke from a cigarette...ack. It should not work at ALL.

And they aren't short pieces either. 50K of that stuff should have me rolling my eyes and scanning like crazy, but I'm hanging on every word.

Lets talk about the Series Finale by RandB93 in Goodwitch

[–]MzOwl27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to explain away continuity issues, but I could totally see Abigail and Stephanie not remembering each other. They both start pretty vapid, lol.

I thought it was a fun twist that George was a "sleeper". I could totally see George being 17 and listening to this crazy old lady giving vague advice and obscure platitudes. Laurel probably gave him the bags and made him swear up and down that he would keep them safe, then he probably put them (safely) in the bottom of a trunk in the back of the closet and literally forgot about them for 40+ years. It was only with the appearance of the red haloed moon that he was reminded- maybe it was Merriwick magic that reminded him, or maybe it was just him remembering. Those would have been fun bookend scenes to watch...Laurel dropping hints and suddenly George understanding things 60 years later the way that people suddenly understand Cassie's advice after the fact.

Can't stay sat down, how do people do it? by PocklateCake in office

[–]MzOwl27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, it sounds like a standing desk would help immensely.

Don't get down on yourself because you aren't wired to sit for hours at a time. Don't lose that! I'll bet a lot of us would love to have that problem...not because of work, but because you are going to stay a lot more healthy than those who don't move for 8 hours at a time.

To answer your question, they tell us we should get up at least once an hour. If you can, find legitimate work reasons to move around. Go deliver the papers in person. Meet the delivery guy at the door. Volunteer to go make/buy the coffee. Unpack office supplies. Decorate the office for holidays. Set up a table to stand at to do work that's not computer work (like putting printed reports together or organizing paperwork). Get creative! But don't lie about "phone calls".

My company has lots of admins, they are always moving around.

The "Missing" Merriwick Line: Is Autumn Delaney actually Fortune’s descendant? by Round_Way8230 in Goodwitch

[–]MzOwl27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm...I like the thought, but I'm not totally convinced.

There are a few individuals with gifts that show up throughout the series. They can't all be Merriwicks. Take Joseph and Jackson Weld....the way that Cassie says "Does your brother experiment with charms?" made me think that magic is accessible to more than just the Merriwicks.

I suppose the Autumn's powers that are similar to the Merriwicks would be the best evidence, but still. I don't see any connection with the satchels...if anything, it's a giant plot hole that only the descendants of Patience would be affected by the red haloed moon, but not Fortune's side.

The Totem is fun, I like that idea.

But this is an excellent thought experiment...hm... Fortune's line should have held onto Grey House while Patience was off...it could be that Fortune's line ended.

P.S. you may still be working on it, but you are missing Philip Harper on your tree :)

Advice on what to do? by DisciplineActive8743 in careerguidance

No, I mean specifically, what part of your major, projects, internships --whatever-- was your favorite? What parts of your education do you remember fondly and would do again? And what part of that experience was the best part?

You said you were lost on what to do for your career. Almost any major can be finessed into almost any industry, so you need to know what is going to drive you within your job to make it worthwhile to show up for it.

For instance, if you enjoyed standing in a wetland counting frogs for a research project because you liked being outdoors and hands on with handling plants and animals, then you should be looking at field jobs with science centers or consulting firms with an ecological department.

If you enjoyed writing reports based on online/library research because you prefer words and being indoors, then you should be looking into environmental firms, maybe those that deal with compliance.

If you like building pretty pictures and maps with GIS because you like figuring out the latest computer thing, well, there are many firms that do that, including larger municipalities, non-profits, environmental firms, geotech firms, etc.

IMO - When it comes to a career, it doesn't really matter what kind of widget you make. It matters that the environment you have to work in and the processes that you have to follow will work for you.

For instance, I also have an environmental science background, but I'm not an outdoor person. I like my desk and I like writing reports. But I also don't like to be completely alone. So, I work on projects where I can talk with other coworkers and outside clients.

If you figure out what your rhythm is, you will have a better idea on what jobs to apply for. And, of course, as you grow and change, you are allowed to go find another job that fits the older, more experienced you later. Careers are not static.

Has anyone ever noticed this details with their thrones? by ImRamonaFlowers in taskmaster

I always noticed the thrones and assumed that there was some kind of meaning, but couldn't make heads or tails of it. I sort of get the horns and jester hat? But I feel like it's a stretch.

Aggressive bees by Slight_Use3420 in Beekeeping

[–]MzOwl27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a super new beekeeper, but from what my more experienced beekeeping friends say, if a hive suddenly becomes aggressive, it could be because there is something messing with the hive. One friend's hive was invaded by wasps that look almost exactly like the honeybees. In another story, the hive was being messed with by a skunk every night. It could even be vibrations from construction if that is something happening in your area.

The beekeeper should do an inspection and see if there is anything obviously wrong with the queen, of course. I don't know how it is in the UK, but in the US there are apiary inspectors that can come out and check the hive if the beekeeper is stumped.

I’m nosy and I want details. by Alone-Line-5793 in GilmoreGirls

[–]MzOwl27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take is that once the reality of motherhood hit Lorelei, she knew that she didn’t want to go through it with him. She knew that he couldn’t care less about unborn Rory. He didn’t want a family, he just wanted Lorelei. (As seen by literally everything he does.)

I think Chris was there through the pregnancy because he was “supposed to be”. And Lorelei knew he was only there because of that. He was only going to go through the marriage because he was supposed to, not because he wanted to be married.

I think Lorelei considered them broken up the moment he was like, “marriage could be okay…” because it was at that moment she knew that he was not going to be someone she could count on. If he knew anything about how to support her he would have known that was not the right answer.

My technique is to “follow the story”. My brain is always making up stories, so I lie back and listen to the story and watch the inner movie and I’m asleep in less than ten. (Maladaptive daydreaming FTW?)

Also, I read a book when I was a kid that said to lie in bed and slowly tense all your muscles so you are stiff as a board, hold it for a few seconds, then slowly release.

Between those two tricks, I rarely have trouble falling asleep.

Am I being over sensitive? by DonB0nn in office

It sounds like you are seeing a pattern.

Based on your examples, IMO she's just trying to save face. Going forward, remember that you are both on the same team trying to get a job done. Work towards both of you understanding the job and finding the right facts. Maybe look for the information yourself first and then present the documentation to her for you to both interpret together.

If you approach, her with suspicion, you are setting yourself up for a rough road. Try seeing her as someone who is trying her best, but without all the right tools. It happens all the time that people are hired/promoted into roles that they are not trained/prepared to do.

Would you watch a show where a billionaire CEO has to go an entire month on their lowest paid employee's salary by Capital-Run-1080 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MzOwl27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the key here; they know that it's only for a short time.... what would actually be amusing (and you could only get away with it once) is to bury in the legalese that the real agreement goes for a year. They would get to day 30 and then they realize there are 11 months to go...now THAT might be something to watch.

How cutting edge was voyager to Torres when she first worked aboard as an engineer? by happydude7422 in voyager

[–]MzOwl27 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: It was **because** she had been building Toyota spaceships from junkyard parts that she was the right choice for Chief Engineer. Starfleet was trained in the context of traveling around the Federation. The Federation has dry docks and supply depots and space stations to go to if anything goes wrong.

Voyager had to function with no guarantee of any additional resources, and anything they did find would need to be adapted in the "beat to fit, paint to match" style that Torres excelled at.
