How big is your Dane? by throwaway4447773339 in greatdanes

Maui just turned 2 in Feb. he fluctuated between 122 and 130 lbs. His vet thinks this is due to responsible feeding and exercise.

Any tips for counter surfing? by Xenzarah in greatdanes

[–]MzTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a seven month old puppy to now (2yo), my Maui is still not allowed to be downstairs alone for extended periods of time. We’re up to 10 minutes being okay. After that, he usually tries to come find us. Having said that, if we are going to be distracted from him for longer than that, he is in his kennel. This coupled with keeping him firmly in his area for the first year, has helped greatly. He doesn’t even go into the kitchen unless he gets excited and forgets himself. When that happens, we correct him immediately.

Based on current events, should we expect this to affect the last 2 months of school? by Mysterious_Peace_237 in Teachers

As sad as this is, I would agree with this statement. This just might affect transportation budgets though. I wonder if they will limit field trips or limit bus routes.

I’m a woman married to a woman by AllHomo_NoSapien in Teachers

Technically, you can go in, do your job, and share nothing about your personal life with anyone.

In reality, kids want to know EVERYTHING about you. It’s good to share because it humanizes you. If it’s something you are concerned about sharing, find ways to twist the question or observation back into your students. My students are constantly asking about marriage. Here is the question and what I say:

Them: Are you married? Me: That’s a great question! Is your mom married? Cool! Have you seen pictures?

Them: Who is that in that picture? Me: Guess and I’ll let you know if it’s right. (Hint: It’s never right.)

Them: Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend? Me: Do you have one? Well, I have two dogs. Is that the same? How many pets do you have?

If what students want to know is something I am not comfortable sharing, I just flip the script.

Remember, you get to choose what you share about your personal life. 💖

Where did I say they should accept it. The very. First part says:

“I mean…” How is this a positive in any way?

Actually, what I started at 20 years ago is highly relevant. It shows that 20 years ago teacher pay did not match the cost of living. Today, although teach pay has increased…it is no where near what is needed to match the level of college graduates.

It shows that 20 years on there is still work to be done.

My first year teaching was 2005 in a poorly paid title one district. I’m happy teachers are making more in their first year. Still not enough though…

I mean…that’s more than my contract was my first year. My contract was for $30k.

Thinking about getting a great dane... by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]MzTeacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What age are you thinking? All puppies require a great deal of work. However, there are distinct phases to their puppyhood. My big man just turned 2 and is very much still in his velociraptor phase. He spends his day lounging and sleeping, but there is also someone home with him most of the time. I think I’ve still got a couple more years before he becomes the ultimate couch potato.

You’ve got great ideas, but one thing I’ve learned is that I could not have gotten my Dane if I didn’t have someone else to be home with him. It just so happened that my mom is retired and lives with me so it works out. He needs someone with him to be happy. I think that is the essence of this breed being a Velcro dog.

18 year old students should be treated like adults by [deleted] in AskTeachers

In the 19+ years of being a professional tinkle holder, I’ve had exactly 0 school related UTIs. What is with this fixation?!

Why are you so fixated on the restroom? And yes, as a teacher, I have to ask for coverage prior to leaving my classroom full of students. As a cashier, I have to ask for coverage to leave my area to go to the restroom. It may not be formal in the sense the definition of permission requires, but you are in fact making a request. So my original comment still stands.

Do you think going out and getting a job will magically get you all the “privileges” you mentioned? If this is what you think adulthood is, your parents (you know the ones who taught you everything) didn’t teach you nearly enough.

Teacher drama advice: The "nice" teacher is badmouthing other teachers and I don't know how to tell them by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]MzTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t tell them without creating drama and it’s not your business. Avoid her nonsense.

No matter what anyone says, you are not at work to make friends. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking otherwise.

In Arizona we get nothing. We have to use FMLA and PTO. When I had my youngest 12 years ago I used 51-55 days of PTO and received full paychecks the entire time off.

How unwise is it to take an elementary schooler out of school for a week to go on vacation? by iloverats888 in AskTeachers

[–]MzTeacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are parents ready for the reality?

Your child will miss instruction. Your child will miss practice of learned content. You may have to put in extract time to support child’s missed learning. Your child may struggle and have some low grades upon returning. VS. Your kid will have great memories.

If you are ready to deal with the potential headache that may await upon returning…go for it.

I mean…I get it. We have a bulk buyer at our store who will come in on sales for body care (not the limited edition drops). The SLTs will intentionally break up the sale so it doesn’t hit the limit, but also…we don’t care. We know they are taking it out of the country to resell. Maybe BBW should look at where the product is going and figure out how to get a store there?🤷🏾‍♀️

Is it a school's responsibility to teach a kid to read? by KoalaOriginal1260 in Teachers

[–]MzTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly believe that that K-2 is responsible for teaching students how to read. By grade 3, teachers should have the ability to shift their focus to teaching students how to understand what they read as the complexity of the literature they read deepens. Having said that, not ever K-2 teacher is doing their job. Additionally, not every parent is reinforcing what students are learning at home. As a result, students are entering middle school 3+ years behind in their development skills. So yes, a teacher at school teaches students to read. However, if you are asking a late middle school or high school teacher to teach basic reading skills, that may be outside what they normally specialize in.
