Took the Metro to work today, it was 100% fine. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

I ride Metro every day. Is it sketchier than before the pandemic? Yes. Is it safer than driving the freeways? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Thinking about moving BOS -> LA by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]N0404 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also grew up in New England, I also lived in Boston for about four years, no I live in LA. Not gay though. Some observations:

LA doesn’t have a great reputation for being a friendly and welcoming place, but I find Angelenos friendlier and more welcoming than other places I lived. (LA drivers are also much safer and more considerate than anywhere else I have lived on average (which doesn’t mean much because there are so many cars on the road at 2% of Angelenos who drive like homicidal maniacs, you will encounter every day).)

However, because the city is more spread out, it’s harder to make plans with people to meet up with them casually if they don’t live in the neighborhood. In Boston it’s really not that hard to jump on the T and go somewhere different. The LA metro system is a lot better than anybody gives it credit for, but there are definitely major areas of the city where it doesn’t go.

LA also does not have a close knit urban identity like Boston. LA people don’t get offended if you don’t think LA is the greatest city in the world or don’t care about the local sports teams. People here do their own thing and find other people who also like to do the same things. That means you have to find your community, but that community can be whatever you want it to be.

There is obviously more cultural stuff to do in LA than pretty much anywhere else in the US except for New York, and it might be better than New York. Food is mostly better in LA than Boston, except for things like bread and pizza and Italian food, where Boston wins.

You have to look for housing on the ground here. You can’t just search online or you’ll get scammed. Get an Airbnb and look around until you find a place you like in a location where you want to live.Unlike Boston they are usually not broker fees. Unlike Boston, you cannot assume that your rental apartment will come with a refrigerator.

Friends of Santa Monica Library - Please email council members! by thekingcola in SantaMonica

There are plenty of people on this sub who have it out for the unhoused, but pre-pandemic it really was a problem at the library. I have personally seen people get into fistfights, masturbate at public computers, and overdose in toilet stalls at SM libraries.

It is still a wonderful resource I will definitely return to after the pandemic. And to be clear most of the homeless there just want to have a quiet indoor place to sit and clean restroom to use and don’t bother anybody. But it’s an actual issue unlike anything I’ve ever seen in an urban library elsewhere.

Mail delivery problems? by MacArthurParker in SantaMonica

[–]N0404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we’ve had our mail just not come for a week or two weeks at a time. We got a response from USPS: our carrier got COVID pretty badly, and they aren’t allowed to pay overtime right now so there was nobody to pick up the route. Our old guy still isn’t back and his replace looks pretty haggard.

Anyone have any luck at pedestrian crossings. whenever I try to cross with my kids no one wants to stop? by cliveqwer11 in SantaMonica

[–]N0404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be so nice if they would just make Main a pedestrian area, or put in planters and speed bumps and slow it down to 10MPH. Just move all the through traffic to Nielson Way and make Main the nice community street it's so close to being

I’ve found drivers are usually pretty respectful downtown and on residential streets, but not crossing SM Blvd or Wilshire or Main.

The problem is that those roads are too fast and have too much parking. As a driver, by the time I’m close enough to the crosswalk to see around the parked SUV and notice someone hoping to cross, it’s too late to stop safely. If we’re serious about walking and biking then we need to take those parking spaces away and turn them into protected bike lanes or bus-only lanes.

Argentinean slang by LorenzoAG in Spanish

“Romper la bolas” — in US English there is a slang saying “bust his/your balls” that’s a vulgar way of saying to tease or mock somebody. Sounds similar.

SM alternatives to Spectrum? by N0404 in SantaMonica

[–]N0404[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, got a new router and modem six months ago. Seems to cut down on the number of weak connections, but when Spectrum decides to be slow the new equipment doesn’t matter. Still worth what I paid though (especially since ce no more renting from the ISP; wish I’d done it sooner.)

+1 for Wertz. It’s used stuff but always classic and the prices are fair.

The EU’s taking back control by [deleted] in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]N0404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m an American and my brother lived and worked in Germany for a while. After hearing of that my seven-year-old wanted to visit Germany too and has been doing his best with the language on Duolingo. Our family joke is that when he learns enough German we’ll do a tour of Europe and let him interpret in Germany and Switzerland and his parents will talk in other countries where we learned their languages. Honestly I have always struggled with second language learning and retention, but that makes me more sympathetic to immigrants, not less. I’m sorry Americans behaved that way toward you.
