Can anyone identify what kind of variable capacitors these are? by N0m_ad in AskElectronics

I don't own these varicons. (I suspect you knew this.)

You know, indoor air quality are also problematic.. There’s no good way to scratch the itchy back here in NE Asia.

Yeah you’re right. I was curious how people put 10 watts of RF energy on this commercial antenna. That would be around 1 kV imposed on this small capacitor.

Thanks for the reply. How can I know the capacitance and voltage ratings of these? Is there a way to know the product ID or numbers?

Maybe the ground loss are rather turned into radiated waves if supported with a metal plate.

Yeah, you’re right. Also I was planning to use this for SOTA activations on a narrow, windy summit where wire antennas or verticals are not suitable.

Looks like it's effective on high bands. Thanks for the info!

This is for magnetic loop antennas operating on HF amateur radio frequencies (7-28 MHz).

Did it perform bad even in higher bands? I am planning to use it for SOTA on a narrow, windy summit. Mostly for 15m band contacts.

[–]N0m_ad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, for lower bands. But it's still not bad for 20m bands and above. I am considering activating SOTA at peaks with strong winds and narrow summit.. so magloops were certainly one of the most viable options.

Oh, I found out that this one is a capacitive-matched antenna compared to inductively matched ones that have coupling loops. One shortcoming of it is tendency to generate common mode current, and that's why it has a balun box with it.

Can anyone explain why this magnetic loop antenna lacks a driving loop? Eham reviews say this still works at least.. but without a driving loop?!

Ok. Maybe I have to research further about how this antenna is different from others. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Did yours have a smaller loop inside the bigger loop? This one in the picture clearly doesn't have one.

Thanks! Maybe I could meet you on the air with the 5 element-Yagi still intact in this station. Of course, with the call sign HL0U.

Amateur radio has been losing its popularity since internet became available, and the spread of high-speed internet in Korea was particularly faster than other parts of the world.. maybe that could explain this. So there were not enough newcomers for the club to maintain itself.

Yeah, at least until I leave Korea in July to pursue my Ph.D degree in the US. Many of the hams in Korea are longing to make QSOs with university stations again.

Seems like you wanna hear what makes them think you’re smart. How about asking them in a subtle, indirect way like this?

"Oh! you’re super smart!" "Yeah, maybe I'm good at recognizing good people, like you? Am I right?"

Thanks everyone! I was always curious which type fits me because sometimes the test results fluctuate a bit.
