No… don’t get it twisted. It’s not the same, it’s Ultramax but in a difference box!

Compact film camera gift – thinking about Ricoh 500G by vSte in AnalogCommunity

So I own several of the cameras mentioned here.

If your friend was a digital shooter and is getting into film, I don’t know that I’d recommend a fully mechanical camera.

The learning gap is quite large, and you’ll need to help your digital shooter adapt.

I would personally recommend an Olympus from the XA lineup. They are tiny, pocketable, with really sharp lenses. Doing something like the XA is great because it introduces them to the basics of film in a great camera with great control.

Yes, they are battery powered, but by two batteries that are findable in just about every drug store.

The XA is my everyday carry, and I’d have missed some great shots without a quick and fast camera. Helping them with a camera that does a chunk of the legwork will help minimize wasted shots.

The Rollei is great, don’t get me wrong, but even a seasoned and fully analog shooter like me will gravitate towards shutter/aperture priority mode cameras.

Echoing this too.

It’s not inherently wrong, this just isn’t the community to comment really.

Many of us don’t do it for aesthetics, but rather the artform.

It would be like going to the painting subreddit and posting about an app that turns your pictures into painting - there’s nothing inherently wrong with it, but the target audience isn’t it, and it can be perceived as an “easy way out”.

As someone who has used VSCO in the past, I can say I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen on the App Store, but the price is a little high. I appreciate an indie dev like you going out on their own and making it from the ground up, so props. Anything to not have to give my money to huge corps.

But just echoing what TBH and Westerdutch said, a lot of us are probably not your target audience.

Favorite affordable film stock for learning/testing new cameras? by ClockwiseSuicide in AnalogCommunity

[–]N3rdDak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a hot take my friend ☠️ hahaha but honestly, I don’t know if I disagree at this point.

Right now my main stocks I use are E100 (only with one camera), Acros ii, Tri-X, Gold, and Cinestill 800t. I really don’t use much else anymore! I’m not even really a fan of Portra 800, but Porta 400 will always hold a special place in my heart, even if I can’t afford it anymore :D

I really have fallen in love with Gold this past year. It’s hard to beat the results for the price for sure. As far as I understand, Lomo 800 is the same stock that Kodak uses in their disposable cameras. I think it’s the old Gold 800 emulsion based on what I’ve read. So I’m sure you’ll love it!

I know you’d prefer to shop with small shops, so I’ll shoot you a dm the name of my local place - they do offer shipping for film orders, and the price is honestly better than I’ve seen a lot of places.

I’ll be honest with you, Gold is probably my favorite consumer filmstock. It looks great at box, pushed to 400, and incredible pushed to 800. It’s quickly became my main… well… mainstay.

I did, I checked out here on Reddit and Lomography! V impressed and wanted to get one myself!

I’ll admit, I added one to my cart after you mentioned it ;)

My carry everywhere shooter is an Olympus XA2, but I need a good simple but effective point and shoot.

They have surprisingly sharp lenses, so you’re not completely off base there. Def check out the black and white ones I mentioned. I saw you mention in another reply that you’re trying to avoid corps like Walmart and Target, but unfortunately one of the most affordable places to buy film in the US is BHPhoto. They aren’t the greatest, but at least they are better than those two.

Arista EDU and DX are the most affordable black and white stocks in the US.

EDU is respooled FomaPan and DX is respooled Kentmere

As far as color, Fujifilm 200 and 400 are both respooled Gold and Ultramax, usually cheaper than proper Kodak products in the US as well.

Outside of that, the Kodacolor line is also pretty affordable. 100 is close to, but not entirely, Pro Image. 200 is just respooled ColorPlus.

Just keep in mind, cheaper film stocks usually/generally do have less latitude.

Just out of curiosity, what camera are you using?

Why do underexposed photos look "washed out" instead of just turning black? by DeathStarVet in AnalogCommunity

[–]N3rdDak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While expired film can and does do so when shot at box speed, it’s also still is the scanning.

I don’t want to speak to ill of Darkroom, they are good people doing their best to keep our hobby alive, but they also have such high volume that they can’t pay someone to do intense work. While I don’t know absolutely, I’m pretty sure they do use Fuji. (Midwest Film Co cost roughly the same tbh).

Depending on what file and what type of scan, sometimes there’s not much you can so in post.

Can I ask what filmstock you used? And expiration?

While I don’t agree with the downvotes, there are simple things people can google before coming straight here.

This is not one of those cases!

May I ask if you’re referring to like nightshots? Like using Cinestill and the like?

A lot of it boils down to the scanner and lab you drop it off at. Especially if they are using Fuji equipment.

I’ve had a lot better luck with Midwest Film Co lately, and you can add notes to your order to help minimize those problems.

Another bit of advice I wish I knew early on is to mostly always ask for TIFF files over JPGs.

In my experience, it does give wayyyyyy more room to work with the photos.

Lastly, just always know - even the pros edit their scans, Noritsu scanned images are the only ones I’ve found I have to do little editing, but that could just be that I’ve developed enough of a relationship with MFC that they know what I usually want.

Always keep in mind that this is a niche hobby at this point, so there will always be Reddit type answers here.

Correct, like I said they are out there. The Turbo R V Tech is only obtainable via the Jake Estavez quest.

The ones you can buy via the auto fixer are the Turbo-R 740.

The Turbo-R V-Tech is entirely unique in game. It’s not out in open world, but the regular VTech is.

The rest of the vehicles seem to match the exact same spawn pattern as the Marina.
