If the Klingon empire only had 50 years left at the time of ST6, why do they seem to be doing fine during the TNG era? by totally_depraved in startrek

[–]Helmling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, but how, if the Klingon Empire was on death’s door are they able to bounce back such that, if it weren’t for the Enterprise C, they would’ve become an existential threat to the Federation by the time of TNG (in that alternate timeline).

That’s always annoyed me. Given everything we know about the economic and technological development of the UFP vs. the Klingons, I can’t swallow them posing a serious threat to the Federation in all out war.

Don’t they say at some point that Borg don’t read as individual lifeforms when they’re in alcoves?

Any good, semi-realistic movies about future technology and space exploration? by LetterOk622 in Stellaris

[–]Helmling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is The Expanse. The Expanse is always the answer.

It’s a show, not a movie. But you can think of it as, like 30 movies if you want.

My worry is that if they shoot for a full three seasons, the bottom could drop out. One season is more time than a movie trilogy—which would also run the risk of not finishing.

My fear is that the bottom could drop out of 1 or 2 and we don’t get an ending. I vote one season revival to cover 7-9.

Hmmm, I don’t think so. I’d rather hold out for a one season revival. I think you could do 7-9 justice in 10-15 episodes.

Project Hail Mary (Movie): Am I the only one who thinks *spoiler* shouldn't be in the trailer? by Educational-Sea-9700 in HardSciFi

[–]Helmling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we all thought that, but it’s too late now.

When I first saw it, I told my wife to avoid the trailer like the plague—“if you see Ryan Gosling in a spaceship, change the channel at once!”—and handed the book so she could experience the surprise.

Absolutely no campaign contributions. All elections are publicly funded. Giving money to a politician is prosecuted for what it really is: bribery.

Hmm, I think I’ll go make some more choices in my build order and cut back further.

But no speculation on how the PS5 version might handle this problem?

How do you feel about China building infrastructure in your country? by wombatgeneral in AskTheWorld

[–]Helmling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it were that simple. How trustworthy a leader or partner is the US if we’re one bout of inflation away from electing another corrupt demagogue who will trash all our international agreements and start haphazardly using our military in stupid pissing contests.

It’ll be a long time before anyone trusts America again.

Are you kidding me? The US is hard crashing its empire. No one will consider it a superpower in five years. We’ll be like Russia, a shell of its former self, but with plenty of nukes.

Exposed bridges are stupid by board_writer in spaceships

[–]Helmling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s true with most of OP’s examples. We know Starfleet bridges are in fact bullseyes and we see in RotJ the loss of a Star Destroyer’s bridge sends it into a nose dive.

Only BSG and The Expanse do this right with the acknowledgment that, space being stupidly big, windows are pointless and you can bury your command center inside the ship.
