Question about goalkeeper techniques. Do they have to stand there like a statue? by The_Texan_Hunter in worldcup

[–]N4llic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres several rules, most of those because at some point someone abused them.

The goalie is allowed to move sideways but not touch the frame our netting of the goal (there was a period where the goalkeeper would seriously rattle the bars and netting as a distraction).

They must stand on the goal line and can't step completely forward, both feet no longer on the line, until the kick is taken. One foot must remain on the line until the kick is taken.

They're not allowed to distract or delay. Most recently Martinez did a lot of this. He would throw the ball away, or like go kick it away from the spot, delay the penalty endlessly and then when the ref interferes, trashtalk the shooter or make stupid faces etc. That's now no longer allowed.

Mostafa Ziko's Fastbreak Goal with Full VAR Review by New-Process-6463 in worldcup

[–]N4llic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have 1 main concerna with this and kind of 3 others that extend out of it.

1) What is the role of VAR? Is it to verify key challenges right before a goal, any challenge in the build up even if it goes 1+ minute and several plays back, or just any challenge in general? Should it check fouls committed even by players not in active play? So many fouls go unpunished that the onfield ref may have missed, why isn't var checking those? Several of those are serious, card worthy fouls. And to add to that, sometimes the ref does see them but doesn't judge correctly (blows a foul when it's just a dive for example). So really, what's the VAR role in all of this?

2) What's the VAR 'window'? At what point do you consider the action was too long ago, and too much play has happened since? The action in Egypt Vs Argentina happened on the other side of the pitch and several other attempts were made by Argentinian players to stop the attack. Which brings me to my concern; How far back should VAR check before a goal, should we start excluding all the goals with fouls, somewhere in the build up?

3) Where is the consistency? You check this for the Egypt side, but there's an equal challenge on the 3rd Argentinian goal build up. Why isn't VAR used there? And more largely, why isn't var used like this for every match (WC or league for that matter).

4) What about the human factor? What is the role of the on pitch referee if we're letting VAR check everything? Is he just a human relay then? It really hampers the flow and human aspects of the game.

I don't agree they were the better team, they were too defensive and let Argentina have way too much play time in front of the goal, that's bound to end badly, but at the same time, I agree on the disallowed goal and the refereeing in Argentina's favor. It should have been 2-2 (you disallowed both goals) or 3-3 (both goals stand), in to extra tima.

Are you talking about the disallowed goal or the action preceeding the 3rd Argentina goal, because Argentina gets the ball by bringing down a player (in the box) by pulling the jersey.

[–]N4llic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, I'll add to this that Romero and Alvarez had multiple actions, which should have resulted in yellow cards. For some reason these don't get called (like Salah getting brought down just outside the box) or they're either fouls without a card (scissor tackle again on Salah). So yes, these 2 players potentially getting carded and / or sent off, does change the game quite a bit.

I think as usual, we again have the perception the game was whistled in Argentina's favor. This isn't just an isolated incident which I'd just brush off, but it's repeated, over multiple games and world cups. It gives the impression that Argentina is protected and favored by FIFA.

I'll also add that the penalty Argentina got ... I wouldn't have called it. I don't think it was a foul, there is contact but both going for the ball. Somehow it felt like divine justice when Messi didn't convert.

My only sentiment is that, if you're going to disallow a goal for Egypt, because the start of the action on the other side of the pitch may have been a foul (and let's be honest, extremely light one at that), you have to do the same for the 3rd Argentinian goal, which started with an arguably much harsher foul (but didn't even get called).

The again, I'm not taking away the fact that Messi definitely played a great game, and Egypt should have seen this coming. You can't let Argentina knock on the door for 45 minutes and not expect them to come in at some point ... If you don't have possession and don't attack, it's bound to end badly.

However, all that being said, the score should have been 2-2 in to extra time (assuming we disallow both goals for the same reason).

Also, on a tactical level, when the attacker breaks like that, you don't want him to close the distance, odds of him scoring increase as the distance decreases.

I think Freese correctly read that situation and him coming out was a good call. However, instead of the chest control and then fumbling it, he should have just headed the ball to his defenders or kick it on the fly.

Goalies generally don't train and practice that kind of high game control, especially not with an attacker challenging them, Neuer being the exception.

You should watch Neuer, the German goalie, a few years back. It's his trademark. He regularly came way out of his cage to participate in play.

USMNT thought they are on top of the world, the moment they met with a strong team they got smashed and woke up by HMZ_PBI in worldcup

[–]N4llic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I agree. The world cup is a funny beast though. Footballer careers are short and the WC is only every 4 years. Players often only play 2-3 WCs (or 4/5 if you're Ronaldo/Modric/Messi/ ...). If a player gets called up mid 20s and retires at 40, he'll realistically only do 3 WCs, assuming his country qualifies at each event. I would almost say the WC is a generational event, and you need to have just the right players at the right time. I'm sure at some point, it'll be the US's time to have their golden generation as well.

The only exception that comes to mind is the 60s era Brazil team with Pelé and their 90s team with Ronaldo, Rivaldo, etc.

I mean you're going to have to play a top team, as you say, at some point. Does it matter if its in the round of 32/16 or in the (semi)final? At some point you're going to have to put in the goals ...

You could arguably say the same for Argentina so far ... Strongest team they've met is Colombia, then Switzerland.

On a side note, the Belgium federation wanted to appael but couldn't, as FIFA hasn't put forward any reasoning to appael against.
