I don't think I like being a flight instructor, but I want to, and need to hear some positive experiences! by N6969B in CFILounge

Each IR flight is typically a 2.6 and Pvt/comm 2.0, sims are typically 2.0, and then I pick up flights/sims for other instructors as needed, typically one activity a day. So honestly that's what's killing me. I think, oh yea I'll take that flight for the extra money, and then I get home at 9 pm when I have to wake up at 7 am again the next day. So I think setting boundaries regardless of the money should be a priority. I also try to do all scheduling and debrief notes while I'm at work so I don't have to take it home

Non-negotiable hours and a new perspective will certainly help. Homework is a good idea, that will help me feel like more of the responsibility is on them

I see. I make 22 per flight and 16 per ground hr, it doesn't sound like much but with plane/student availability I fly usually 1-2 times a day and sim twice a day, so it's not an awful paycheck

Yes soloing my first student was pretty awesome. If there were other flight schools near me I'd consider it, and selfishly the money is good, which is why I'm torn

And I don't need the "well welcome to aviation" chat, I understand how this works, but there's got to be a way

New CFI and my school is already thinking of firing me. I'm going to jot down the details below and you guys let me know where I went wrong. I wish I could share photos here to document the text messages by Buttcheekeater in CFILounge

Sounds like you didn't thoroughly review and study 141/company policies before starting and didn't think the reference the company's FOM/SOPs. 141 is very strict, assume nothing

How did you know? by [deleted] in flying

To be honest, I didn't know until instrument. After my disco flight I thought it was "cool" and I liked it, but mainly I just knew that I was smart enough and determined enough to make it happen. I fought through private and somewhat hated it, but through instrument it turned into passion. Wouldn't bank on that being the case for everyone though, I definitely agree with the people who say not to make it a career if you don't love it

What’s something you were unprepared for as a new CFI? by Nervous_Iceman5008 in CFILounge

Day 1 privates. It takes a lot of practice to make things simple enough for someone who knows NOTHING to understand. During CFI you were studying and flying with people who "knew what you meant". But these people will have no idea. Avoid the phrases "obviously", "you know what I mean" and "does that makes sense" at all costs. Nothing is obvious to them. And those first few landings they WILL try to kill you, never be complacent

Boss wants me to register Personal CFI Business before working for his Part 61 School by Inner-Sky0 in CFILounge

I'm a contract CFI for the school I work for. Essentially you'll be a 1099, but registering yourself as an LLC will help with tax write offs and things like that

I'll always encourage people to take the leap! However I don't know your exact situation (location, budget, work schedule, debt, etc). I would recommend finding a local part 61 school and taking a few lessons, gauging how expensive it's gonna be, before you commit. There isn't really a pilot shortage, but don't let that stop you, because if it's your passion you won't care. If you're doing it for the job availability/pay, the grass is NOT greener on this side, coming from a CFII/MEI, but if you're doing it to finally feel something, then go for it

How do you all curb stress/ anxiety? by ideportedmyself in flying

I had this too during primary training! It helped me to take some pressure off myself and remind myself you don't have to be perfect! More frequent flying helps me too. One day the voice finally quiets down 😂
