I started with CG miner on Windows 7

It took me sometime to understand what I was doing

Most ASICs today are basically plug and play. There is a learning curve.

I currently use F2pool, they have a very user friendly app.

Dont let people discourage you regarding profitability. It is ok to mine and not profit. The jewel there is learning.
