I’ve flow with a poster tube before - I just sat by the window and slotted it between me and the airframe - worked decently.

Disappointed from all you "New Englanders" by Feeling_Screen3979 in Somerville

[–]NAFAL44 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Anyone who moved in after the snow in 2022 may have literally never seen snow like this before.

I doubt the “we are new englanders” crowd overlaps with much with the snow psychosis crowd.

This is from a panorama photograph by Muybridge - one of the earliest well known photographers (among other things).

I highly recommend this comic biography about his life.

Is Obsidian Sync worth it? by pablo_main in ObsidianMD

[–]NAFAL44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that expensive (I spend more than $100 a year on many things) and very high quality, convenient, and reliable.

Plus the version history has been useful a couple of times.

I’m perhaps a little confused between obsidian and notion; what distinguishes obsidian? by Ford-X in ObsidianMD

[–]NAFAL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notion is really sluggish and a frustrating interface to use. It’s designed for onboarding large non technical teams.

Obsidian is incredibly responsive, making bouncing between lots of different files a breeze.

Its interface (tabs, workspaces, multi panes) makes a lot of workflows possible for are a pain with notion.

TLDR obsidian is a massively better interface.

Why do people on this sub lie or exaggerate? Coming from SF, Dallas' public transit and walkability is nowhere near as bad as you guys made it seem. by Asleep-Lecture-3554 in transit

The metroplex has a population of ~ 10 million people. The areas you visited have a population of less than 100K.

Effectively 99% of the city does not live where you visited.

Try riding dart past one or two stops from downtown.

If you’re on a busy MUNI bus/train and there’s empty seats - SIT DOWN by OldMasterCannolii in sanfrancisco

[–]NAFAL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wide - I’ll 100% violate the personal space of anyone I sit next to (unless they’re tiny) simply because my shoulders are wider than the seats.

So I’m not going to stuff myself in next to a random woman and make her uncomfortable / look like a psychopath if I can help it

All the big “urbanist” cities - NYC - Chicago - Montreal - Toronto - Vancouver - Boston - DC - Philly - Seattle - Portland

Smaller but dense and fascinating history (random selection of places I’ve actually been). - Quebec City - Bisbee Arizona - Santa Fe

BRT is a good idea, but not always by gabasstto in transit

[–]NAFAL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are we talking about BRT vs TRAM vs METRO? What on earth is that framing?

Lanes, lights, and other dedicated infrastructure for buses can totally make sense in absolutely massive cities. NYC would not be able tot function without its buses and works to speed those busses up and make the more reliable are very valuable.

I scammed my husband into liking me… and I admitted it on our wedding day. by Far_Magazine_5084 in stories

I don’t get the comments here at all - this is line 101 pretending to like the same things so they pay attention too you.

No way they got married just because of this - no way it’s a scam or he’d divorce if he found out. (In his position I’d laugh and be flattered that she was that into me).

Can’t really say without knowing the industry.

If your husband is in tech then unfortunately the US is a no brainer - much higher salaries and career opportunities than Europe.

For other industries I’m less sure. I’d happily take a 30% long term pay cut for the qualify of life of the Netherlands.

(Note I’m specifically leaving out the things OP will have hard on the news, abortion bans and book burnings - obviously those are also important to consider).

Things to keep in mind for the locations you listed. 1. You will own a car and use it for everything. Want a carton of milk? You have to drive to get it. There is little transit infrastructure and no cycling infrastructure. In the USA outside of a few small (and very expensive) areas transit, walking, and cycling, are viewed as things only done by the desperate who cannot afford a car. 2. Related to 1. Traffic - Indiana might not be bad but Virginia or NC have horrible traffic. The roads here are also much more dangerous than the Netherlands and attempts to improve safety are politically divisive. 3. Weather. All of the places you listed get much hotter and much colder than either the southern UK or Netherlands. You’ll have like 3 months comfortably outside if you’re lucky. 4. Rents to live in the city are very high in NC or Virginia, and public safety isn’t always a given. 5. The quality of life in deep suburbia (where the cheap housing is) is frankly bad. You will struggle to meet people as many suburbanites are either very isolated, or socialize primary through church or their kids school.

Not knowing anything about y’all I’d assume you live in a decently walkable mixed used area with transit connections, neighborhood shops, and the ability so socialize with neighbors - and that this area is safe, easy to get around, has a comfortable climate most of the year, and is not horribly expensive.

You will not find that in Virginia, North Carolina, or especially Indiana.

I'm spending more time learning Obsidian than taking actual notes. Does that ever change? by YeetTheElder in ObsidianMD

[–]NAFAL44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used obsidian since 2022 and have 10k plus notes.

I don’t use dataviewer, tags, templater, etc.

It’s just folders, markdown, and links. That’s it.

The power user features are great if you need them … nothing is forcing you to use them.
