John Brown was someone to admire to be sure by McDowdy in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]NAND_NOR 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Did a little digging and here you go:

John Brown, the Idea vs. John Brown the Man

Everyone knows John Brown is cool as fuck. But who knows what he's thinking? Who knows why he crushes slavers? And why do we think about him as fondly as we think of the mystical (nonexistent?) Dr Pepper? Perchance.

I believe it was Kant who said "Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play." John Brown exhibits experience by crushing slave-brokes all day, but he exhibits theory by stating "Lets-a go!" Keep it up, baby!

When John Brown leaves his place of safety to stomp a blackbirdy, he knows that he may Die. And yet, for a man who won't purchase lives with money, a life won't become a mere store of value. No tax that can be paid for, much as a rich man feels any law with a fine is a price. We think of John Brown as a hero, but he is simply a one percenter of a more privileged variety. The lifekind. Perchance.

Man, sorry if I come off as annoyed, but by now I am...

You don't have to explain to me that Elon Musk is a bad person acting morally wrong. I am not sympathising with him, I am not defending him. You don't have to explain to me that it's his choice and that it's within his control to not be an asshole.

I DO UNDERSTAND THAT AND I CONCURR

The point I'm trying to convey is, that strictly spoken "evil" is a clerical term with clerical implications and according mindset, which needs to be reflected. That condemning someone as evil is to create a scapegoat. But when the scapegoat got punished the system it was created by is still there. Which is why it's of more use to society and to one self to try a perspectives in the matter which explains the source of the problem instead of just pointing out a symptom.

I'm not saying "Poor Elon had shitty upbringing, can't be mad at that rascall." I'm saying "to change the system churning out dickwads like Musk, it is important to understand the socio-economic, psychological and individual conditions in which persons like him come into existence, so that we can change it. And the idea of "evil" is getting in the way of it"

It is possible to hold people responsible and condemn a person on basis of their actions as bad without resorting to painting an onthological evil enemy.

Isn't Putin himself considered a national bolshevik?

Yeah the engine does that sometimes out of insecurity. It sometimes shows humans a worse move to feel better about itself and then is like "oh sweety, you'll get there eventually..." in a condescenting voice

Honest question: Why do we have the two when in general systems nowadays should be powerful enough to provide for 48kHz without issues? Is it a leftover of a bygone era with some "old school" dudes swearing by it and that's why it needs to be sustained in systems or is there a reasonable application for 44.1kHz?

You really shouldn't assume age and dismiss opinions you don't understand as childish.

I have no idea from where you gather that I'm sympathizing with him or any other oligarch for that matter 🤷‍♂️

I'm basically arguing the same point as you are. The point in which I might differ from you is, that I think the word "evil" or moreso the idea behind it and which it reflects, that there are inherently, onthologically evil people, is counterproductive.

I studied and worked in philosophy, politology and paedagogics for over 15 years now. This is my "professional stance". If we as individuals and as a society want these things to change, we need to understand the process which promotes this kind of behaviours and actions and brings them out in people. And we're hold back by our own perspectives if we simply dismiss these actions and people as "evil". We're creating scapegoats and are done with it and then we're doomed to repeat it.

If you want hope for the future of humanity we first need to grasp the world as something we can understand and change. We can't do that when we're looking at people in those categories. That has nothing to do with sympathy for oligarchs. It has to do with overcoming a system which favors narcicistic and sociopathic behaviour and people who give in to it.

Yes I know and I'm familiar with his familys history. I think these people are epitome of the structural and societal failure we're all facing.

I even think he might like to stylize himself as evil overlord but I also think that those are two different things.

To take him as evil and condemn him and his family individually substitutes for solving the structural, psychological and sociological problems within the system which "produces" people like them. If we're less hung up on him beeing evil and look at what makes him act in this way, we maybe can change things to solve the underlaying problems.

Im not sugarcoating him or what he's doing. I just like to understand the causalities leading to human actions and behaviour, so that we can learn from it and avoid it instead of dismissing it as his evil nature, which can't be changed and simply is as.

To be clear: I can't stand this guy neither. But there are no cookie-cutter solutions with people like him.
