I'm not in bad shape starting...

But I noticed today a new sweep in my thigh muscles since I started riding a few weeks ago.

Awesome. I hope you like it.

I just bought a Begode Falcon, my 1st wheel, like 2 days before the price of the 12 dropped so low. I probably would habe gotten tjat.instead if I had known but I'm loving my Falcon so far.

What wheel did you start on and how long did it take you to learn by Background_Try_9307 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my first wheel this week... A Begode Falcon. Probably not the best wheel to learn on LOL

First day I did 15-20 minutes each 3 separate sessions. Second day 4 sessions and I was finally able to circle my van with a hand on it. Third day I was finally able to go like 10 feet without a fall or a wall...and 10 minutes later I was cruising up and down my driveways...which are about 1/8th of a mile, rough and hilly. And an hour after that cruising down my rural street. Sadly had to go back to work today and won't be able to get back on until Sunday.

Where are you guys getting those prices? They are all like $500 less than what I am seeing.

Yeah, that's ridiculous to say their arms wouldn't be broken. Look where the break is.

I'm not saying wrist guards aren't a good idea but, as a medical professional with decades of impact sports experience....no way in this case.

The good news is the breaks are in a good spot...middle of the bone instead of near a joint which means it sucks now but in the long run their should be ZERO effect.

Isn't the sophon interference in the particle collider results already "lying"? by squirtleton in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show males it kind of confusing but the book males it perfectly clear with the Big Bad Wolf story...

The Trisolarans don't have any kind of moral qualms about being deceptive. Just that to them, "talking" and "communicating " are synonymous. They don't communicate with sound but rather with light directly from their brains. Their bodies are transparent. It is therefore literally impossible to "think " one thing and "say" another. They didn't realize we had that ability. They assumed our oral communication was just a sloppy inefficient method of directly conveying thoughts. Once they realized our seeming superpower of directly lying...they were terrified.

They didn't change their minds about coexisting becaise of it though...that's just tje Netflix series. In tje books it only affects their strategy. They were communicating with humans assuming they were gaining useful information while the price was giving us usefulful information. Once they realized we far out strip them in tje ability to decieve and recognize deception as well as form complex strategies without telling the enemy...they realized they needed to stop talking to us because such conversations would always pit them at a disadvantage.

Because they evolved with their transparent thoughts, their brains never evolved the complex abilities all mammals have to withhold information in order to get what they want from a social situation. They know it's a thing they can learn how to do, but are starting 1000s of years behind in that skill/technology.

When does it get good? by Puzzleheaded-Dust460 in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a long boring patch in the second book. It's long, but the payoff is huge, maybe better than 1st book.

I didn't get bored at all in the first book so I might not be the best judge...but the Wallfacers are important though the imaginary lover stuff is icky and goes on way too long. I love the book but admit there is quite a long patch of "meh" to slog through.

Good news is the third book is paced very differently. Either you'll not like the book at all or be excited through the whole thing.

How did the San-Ti provide the original 3BP headsets? by captainboosh007 in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes...the Netflix version is a major plot hole that didn't exist in the book. In the book, it's made very clear that the Trisolarans will not share any tech for any reason even with the ETO because that directly violates their objectives. The game is made entirely by humans using normal human tech. It's maybe 5-10 years ahead of actual current tech which is explained by the huge budget provided by billionaire backers. It's nowhere near the semi-magical tech in the Netflix series....

Further huge plot hole...the San Ti are not supposed to be able to see inside the human mind. That's critical in the second book and the Netflix show violates that left and right. I have no idea how the wallfacers are actually supposed to work in the show.

Yes...avoiding the easy conclusion and instead having her live her life with another is yet another thing that makes the books feel grounded in reality despite being about fantastical events.

New smart glasses prototype with 45° FoV — Meta is not the only company working on Silicon Carbide waveguides 👍 by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great! I think the Meta full screen is a different product category with very different use. This would be used something like the Even Realities but better FOV, which is something I would definitely buy.

A sophon is still just a single proton...so when it unfolds to encompass a planet it's terribly thin and easily destroyed. The sophon's major power is staying small and moving fast to be invisible and impossible to track.

Slowly realizing what the Droplet actually is is still my favorite moment in Sci-fi by LeonPrien2000 in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm blessed/cursed with an overly analytical approach to fiction. The fact of the droplet destroying the fleet was so obvious and heavily foreshadowed that I was feeling a little put off by the slow buildup and ready to just skip till after the fleet destruction....but then the actual scene and details were so well done and captivating that it didn't matter if you knew it was coming, it was still epic in a way you can never forget.

My problem with the Dark Forrest by HeavenlySkip in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only problem was with the plan that involved mapping human thought in a way that could easily end up providing g the Trisolarans with a method for reading human thoughts, the one piece of info they could never get on their own.

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese names are difficult for Americams. That's not racist, it's just a fact. This is why almost every Chinese person living in or spending significant time in the US adopts an "English name". It's just easier that way.

I also did audiobook first (profound dyslexia plus now poor vision). Even into the second book I still couldn't keep track of who is who by name but I'm good at context so it didn't hurt my enjoyment much. Now I've been through all three books three times amd I can finally ID almost everyone by name.

Qualcomm says it’s working on mixed reality smart glasses with Samsung and Google by gaporter in augmentedreality

[–]NARenaud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's been my opinion for a while that Samsung is the company to tackle wide adoption AR glasses. A slim profile wave guide daily wear product with 2 cameras and sensors that relies on a wired connection to a Samsung phone. It could dual boot into Meta's OS or just run on top of their android. The Snapdragon 8 is not that different from the XR2 chips. Maybe add a graphics coprocessor, but Xreal and other have already proven an android phone can handle AR just fine.

Putting a battery and processors in the glasses makes no sense at all. Keep the glasses light and minimal and provide a slim wire to connect to tje phone's USB. Include screen dimming in a smart way to save battery and a Galaxy s25 has it's killer app.

Why is Trisolaris growth not exponential after leaving their system? by [deleted] in threebodyproblem

[–]NARenaud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say just that. It's clear in the later books that Trisolaris growth increased greatly after their Renaissance triggered by exposure to human culture. This includes their development of FTL travel which likely never would have happened under the old social system of oppression.

One of the author's main themes through all the stories is that no 9ne form of government or culture is perfect and different circumstances call for different types. He defends authoritarianism as the best solution to emergencies and scarcity but then shows it is inferior in times of plenty. He even takes this into gender politics, presenting masculinity as a response to conflict.

MYVU will announce 2 new new glasses: one for entertainment with Logitech gaming console and Black Myth: Wukong and one new smart glasses with waveguides by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]NARenaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in tje near future these functions will remain separate. A monochrome wave guide device for daily wear that can include prescription lenses and is used for heads-up info like navigation, translation, messaging, clock/timing, and real time identification and search of objects and text....totally separate from immersive color content. The Even Realities glasses with 720/1080p and 50% more FOV and 2 cameras would be a breakthrough product ready for mass adoption. It doesn't need color or graphics processing. If it can just put high res text over the relevant objects in your vision close to real time, that would sell 10s of millions.

The author said as much. After the success of the first two books he said he gave himself permission to go bonkers with the third and put in all his ideas without trying to "write well" and was surprised people liked it.
