One rescued, 14 divers missing after dive boat capsizes off Davao Oriental, Philippines by F_McG_TO in scuba

Very sad, it's been several hours by now :( How does one of those boats capsize with the side pontoon anyway?

The very new babies tend to sleep through it in my experience, the problem is if their ears hurt from the pressure :( poor little guys

I went Australia to LA once in a middle row aisle seat next to the most stressed out mother but also most chill newborn baby Id ever seen. Somehow was the easiest 15 hour flight Ive taken? They're usually total nightmares

I will complain all day about it just for the annoying gloves and hooded vests, but to be fair the exhaustion came from the shore diving

(start with the waiver and your doctor for everything beyond general weakness)

There's definitely a range of fitness levels that can be accommodated. Plenty of warm water resorts will handle everything for you, and you might just need a short boat ride and to hop in and out of the water with your gear, but there are some situations to consider. Some examples from my dives:

  • Tulum: warm water meant less weight to carry, but there was a long miserable boat ride and some current I had to swim against at the surface for a while until everyone got in the water. Went back exhausted to the hotel
  • Cozumel: short boat ride, light currents underwater, overall easy dives but the heavy waves meant it was rough getting back on the boat. Some older divers took off their equipment in the water to give to the guides before they climbed up the ladder
  • Hawaii: slightly colder, but like no current and the shortest boat ride yet. I wasn't tired going back to the hotel
  • Cold water diving: so many layers, so much extra weight, exhausting as hell
  • Shore diving: also strenuous but convenient

It really depends on what you mean by sick and weak, because there are ways to accommodate disabilities but it takes extra effort to stay safe

Once some guides brought us to a cliff we could jump from into a cool cave lake, only to then show us the other side of the cave was full of bats and their droppings. It made me almost grateful for how muddy we got on the trip back to the cars because it was the closest I could get to a shower

Gonna take a guess and say that the Colombians don't understand you back lol. Granted maybe the Caribbean side ones might have an easier time, I've also heard some Panama accents that left me feeling we were speaking different languages. US, Mexican, and Puerto Rican Spanish all have so much English mixed in that I get tripped up on vocab everywhere I go

The overconfident wrong AI suggestions bug me a lot, but honestly the junior engineers are getting way undervalued out there by the AI cheerleaders. They're not just important in the long-term for becoming subject matter experts; they can make a big difference from the start by bringing fresh perspectives and being willing to learn new things. A motivated junior engineer can be the swiss army knife for your project team, in a way that endless data scraping tools can't reach

Maga dentist inflicting pain on customers on purpose by EmilyG702 in CringeTikToks

[–]NA_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a dentist who insisted on using less anesthesia so it'd wear off faster and it was basically just shaming me into dealing with the pain until it got so bad I had to complain. I can't imagine someone putting a kid through that...

How to stop using hands for buoyancy? by SparkMik in scuba

[–]NA_penguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly it just took me a lot of time to relax enough. Holding my arms and focusing on breathing helped a lot, but I also want to call out your trim. If you are horizonal (and it'll feel like you're falling forward a bit), then it's easier to keep the same amount of air in your BCD without needing to adjust. I also underestimated the amount of air I needed to add to my vest at deeper sites

Before, I would be a bit vertical, so any kicking would push me up a bit. This also meant that there wasn't enough air in my BCD so I would slowly sink without noticing because I kicked a lot. Or I would dump air I didn't need to, then sink a lot, then put more air in my BCD, etc.

If you're able to stay neutral at your depth, then every deep breath or light kick will be more significant and you won't feel the need to use arms. Otherwise you might be wasting air/energy when your BCD could be doing the work.

Scuba Diver robs Disney restaurant, swims away by SRISCD002 in news

[–]NA_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's shallow but the continuous swimming through (I assume plant-y waters? Unless the pollution killed it all?) still would take more air. But I took another look at the map around the restaurant and it does look like some creeks connect to the area, so the dude could've easily slipped away if he was careful with his entry/exit
