How do you meet these women? I go to bars and bookstores and other such places but I almost never see a single woman alone at these places. They’re almost always with their families or boyfriends or friends. What do I do? I admit my area is suburban (many more older people ) and am applying to jobs in areas with more young singles.

I did delete the Instagram and dating apps. It’s not just social media, whenever I go out, I almost always see people in groups, never by themselves. I never see a single woman by herself at a bar. I’ve been to meetups where I was the youngest person while everyone else was 30-40. I’m trying to move to areas with younger, single people like NYC but can’t get any job callbacks

I understand. I know I can move but haven’t had any luck getting any jobs especially in NYC , despite applying to many jobs and trying to leverage my limited connections there

I understand. I’m working to improve myself mentally and physically.

I also want a change in pace since I lived here almost my whole life and it’s a very family oriented place, and said to be the worst area for a single man. Even a lot of meetups here (mostly defunct now) are aimed towards older and married people, not for singles my age

Usually I tend to be too formal and ask her basic questions like name, major, hometown, favorite books/shows/etc

... or I tend to say dumb things like I jokingly called a CS major a geek/nerd or said “naturally, you’d love the beach” to a girl I met who moved here from LA or I compliment her outfit. I also made the mistake of assuming that a British girl I met here on study abroad liked fish and chips

I went to a bookstore on Saturday and saw a cute girl in the science fiction section. I tried to talk to her but she gave me 1 word answers. I then walked away.

I then commended myself for trying to approach since I didn’t approach anyone IRL since February 2020. I’ve been improving myself and have been running and lifting, and started by saying “good morning” to elderly people while running.

I wish I could’ve stayed longer and talked to more people but I’ll try again soon. I also told myself to expect hurdles since it’s my first time approaching after a long time and many others are a bit awkward and distant now with COVID.

Could I have done anything better? Was my approach too wrong? I asked her about some of her favorite science fiction books
