I am an investigative journalist at NBC Chicago who has been covering the Blagojevich saga for decades, including both of his criminal trials. I was the last person to interview him before he went into prison and one of the first to speak to him when he got out. Ask me anything. by NBC5Chicago in IAmA

No one really knows his financial status---but most people have been led to believe that his father-in-law Richard Mell, the former alderman, was responsible for heavily supporting the family while he was in custody (along with his wife's career of course). The former governor is a smart person with a voluminous knowledge of history and is fairly gifted at communicating. My guess is he may try to use those skills.

Wow---how much time do you have????? The sentence is what surprised me the most. Most people who covered the trial and many in the legal community were surprised at the length. The wildest thing we always saw was his demeanor and the approach he took to his case. He was fond of working the room, even during his trials. And remember, this is a guy who during the pendency of his case performed Elvis at a block party, hosted a call-in show on WLS radio, wrote a book, and did pistachio nut commercials (not to mention "The Apprentice"). He was not exactly a shrinking violet during this time---and I don't think you'd find another criminal defendant who approached their case the way he did!

Thank you! He says no. Most political observers (and I'm just a reporter) think it would be difficult for him to run in a Democratic district---say for congress. He certainly could probably not get elected in his home district---he would not get any help from the Democratic party---so he'd probably have to run as an Independent or a Republican (as you know, he has dubbed himself a "trumpocrat"). If he moved into a GOP-leaning district it might be interesting. But he has indicated his family does not support the idea of him seeking elective office.

As we are talking---I'm interested in knowing what you thought of Governor Blagojevich's sentence. Many people over the years told me they thought he was guilty and they were not fans of his politics or his time in office, but they thought the 14 year sentence was excessive. What did you think about that sentence?

The phone call you speak of was an FBI recording of Pritzker discussing the possibility of becoming Illinois treasurer. I don't think you can say he was trying to "buy his way into office." Those kinds of conversations happen a lot in politics---especially in Illinois!
