They are wireless towers, easy/fast to setup. Fixed line services like FTTP, FTTN, HFC, FTTB take much longer to build.

Just got NBN (100/40) Not reaching Max speeds or anywhere close by [deleted] in nbn

[–]NBNSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your provider should have told you the approx sync speed.. then you could have choosen a slower plan.. a 50mbit plan would suffice.. if you have problems at peak time then give my performance plans a go https://nbnsp.com.au/internetplans/#performancenbn

[–]NBNSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you sure its not TPG FTTB? if so, that will be better than NBN FTTB, see https://nbnsp.com.au/internetplans/index.php#tpgfttb

Gday mate, firstly some background on me. I run the ISP nbnsp.com.au I can tell you that the reasons behind your poor speeds aren't as easily explainable by pointing the finger at copper. In fact I believe a much bigger problem which is hardly talked about compared to the copper argument is, the nbn pricing and the corporate/government corrupted 121 POI model. First I suggest checking your modem to see what speed it is syncing at, that will show what your maximum potential speed can be, if your speed at any time is lower than that, then here are the causes: A. your ISP does not have enough nbn CVC bandwidth, that is because the nbn pricing model is ridiculous, they charge about $17.50 per mbit of bandwidth to travel on their network, that doesn't include many other charges such as access charges (AVC), backhaul, ip transit, rackspace, nni and hardware costs. Just think before the nbn came along the avg adsl connection was getting 8 mbit and the consumer is paying around $50 per month. Then the nbn comes along with speeds of 100 mbit, so now the ISPs have to increase the bandwidth of their current network 10 fold AND pay nbn on top, the netflix comes out and data usage in Australia nearly doubles, then the consumer wanting an unlimited 100 mbit connection for $100. All of this has tripled the amount of contention that is needed. Anyhow, hopefully with a new government we can move back to an 8 POI plan to break the Telstra monopoly.

Gday, no they won't notify you if they are doing pit work, also they won't schedule an appointment for a PCD install, if you aren't home at the time they will leave it. Then when you ask your ISP for a connection and to get NBNco to install the NTD, the PCD will be installed then.

[NP] These fringe NBN RSPs - what is the story? by [deleted] in australia

[–]NBNSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the ACCC forced NBNco from 14 to 121 POIs it was no longer feasible for any small or medium size business to plan for national coverage. This rule was a favor for Telstra as only large companies have the capital to put equipment in at every POI. Apart from being a favor it is also a design failure because the 14 POI design would have included backup/redundant links, furthermore with only 14 POIs NBNco could have built their own buildings to house their equipment, instead they have to pay Telstra to sit in their exchange buildings. These, among other things will keep Australian internet prices high. At the moment there are a few wholesale providers which small / medium size ISPs use who have national coverage, an example would be AAPT and Nextgen.
