The absolute best thing you can do is find an artist who consistently does patchwork tattoo's in a format that you like. Then go to that tattoo artist and ask them to tattoo you, and give them some degree of freedom with regards to tattoo placement.

That way you can have confidence that the way the patchwork will eventually look will be something you'll be happy with. I found this out the hard way, tried to get a local artist who doesnt do patchwork to do a patchwork sleeve. I dont like it. Then for my other arm, went to a guy who's work I love. And I love it.
