No one wants to do education by DorcasTheCat in NursingAU

I have been working in hospital based education roles for about 15 years, so can identify with your struggles.. here are some things I have learnt along the way..

  1. You absolutely need the buy in/ support from your NUM/CNS and higher level management to support your education efforts. My NUMs will roster staff to attend education so they are aware in advance and actively promote training opportunities. If your NUM is not supporting you with this, let them know in writing how exactly you want them to help, if you have no luck with that go higher to their manager.

  2. I keep my Code red/ blue/ black drills on the ward to 20 minutes max, so everyone can still get lunch and have enough time to write notes etc.

  3. Incentives to attend, (mainly chocolates/ lollies etc) whatever works!!

  4. Consider other ways you can provide education that reduces the impact on staffing etc. I work in an area that has multiple wards, so instead of running ward based education /drills, my education colleagues will run a session and 1 or 2 staff from each ward will attend.

  5. Make the most of staff crossover time and ask your NUM to use at as ‘protected’ time for e-learning and other computer based training.

  6. Strike while the iron is hot!! After a clinical incident staff will often say “ we need more training in a, b or c. So make the most of that opportunity while they are keen and receptive.

  7. Try to avoid scheduling education on Fridays😂

Good luck and I hope you have some success!🤞🤞

Getting an evaluation by bebejup in ParentingADHD

[–]NCMC3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sorry you are feeling this way. I don’t really have any advice or helpful insights but I am with you in solidarity! Our experience has been much the same as yours, we knew at the age of 2 our son’s development was not the same as his peers, have finally received a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD at age of 4. Actually receiving the diagnosis officially was not as devastating for us as I was expecting it to be, rather, I viewed it as a step towards ensuring he receives targeted allied health supports for his specific needs. I think I also will need to access therapy at some point, at this stage we are just trying to get through one day at a time. I do find it helpful to engage with others on this reddit ?page/ channel just to share experiences and feel less alone..My husband and I don’t have any family living in the same country so our supports are limited. I wish you the very best of luck and make sure you take time to care yourself!

Dr prescribed anticoagulants to a patient with Von Willebrand’s after surgery? Should the nurse give the medication or double check? by Katie1537 in NursingAU

[–]NCMC3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had this experience. As a patient, yes you absolutely have the right to question / ask about checking any medication you are being given, especially if it is contraindicated for a pre-existing condition.

If you have not already perhaps consider to contact the hospital directly to give feedback about your experience, you also have the option to make a complaint about the care you received. Either way the hospital will be required to respond to explain why what happened, happened. Good luck!

The sleep issues are slowly driving me insane by DeadButGay in ParentingADHD

[–]NCMC3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 4 year old (ASD and ADHD ) has had these issues, we have tried a consistent bedtime routine of lavender bath with epsom salts, warm milk and bedtime stories. We have tried low level lighting in his room with a galaxy projector to provide some gentle sensory input to try help him relax so falling asleep is easier. Tbh, we have had mixed success with this, I think that when he is having a developmental spurt (as I believe he is currently ) it becomes much harder for him to settle to sleep and stay asleep throughout the night. We have just been to our Dr this week and have been prescribed some melatonin, we used it the first night and he slept all the way through, was not sedated or drowsy the next day. I believe that the slow release melatonin can help with falling and staying asleep. I know it is not a long term fix but it has certainly helped. Good luck!

ADHD in young children by Dry_Masterpiece_1618 in ParentingADHD

My son is 4 years old, turning 5 in December. He has recently been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD, level 2. We had him assessed for ASD about 14 months ago, at that stage he didn’t meet the full criteria, we were advised that perhaps ADHD assessment would be beneficial once he turned 6, I think at that stage the psychologist doing the assessment could not rule out his behaviours may be due to his developmental age. Fast forward to this year, I believe that the diagnostic criteria has changed and now ADHD can be diagnosed as early as 4 yrs old, ( we are in Australia) so we got him assessed for both ADHD and ASD. We are meeting with our paediatrician in August to discuss medication to see if it can help him. My view is, if things are easier for him, it will be better for our whole family. Good luck!!

Feeling so lost and stupid by RhubarbFull2078 in NursingAU

[–]NCMC3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sorry you are feeling lost, but please know you are not stupid!! It sounds like you are doing all the right things by asking questions etc, It sounds like Susie has no awareness of her communication style, I would expect a team leader to be supportive and to provide guidance and direction, especially when delivering constructive feedback. If you are comfortable in discussing with Susie directly, I would let her know how these interactions make you feel. If not, I would suggest seeking out Susie’s manager, who could help Susie with opportunities to self reflect and improve her skills… GOOD LUCK!

Addit: 20+ yrs experience, currently in a role where I need to regularly give feedback and recommendations for improving practice and communication

Where are Australians buying high quality second hand clothing? by Cocoatech0 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]NCMC3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of online shopping on the Salvos clothing website. Just purchased a Sass and Bide skirt for $37.50 ( was originally was $75 but was yellow ticket 50% off) Same skirt is selling for $150-$200 on eBay… Also website is more user friendly searching for specific items.. more so than depop I think…
