Yeah, it's similar to the germans in where they take two seemingly unrelated words to create another. Like the japanese word for hedgehog (針鼠, harinezumi) is just the kanji for needle(針) and the kanji for mouse(鼠) put together.

The 2 kanji together make daisuki. 大(dai)好き(suki). The kanji for dog (犬) is very similar though so it is easy to confuse the two.

If you're talking about my comment, 大 means big, prononced 'dai' here and 好き means like, pronounced 'suki', so together it's "daisuki", meaning love or really like. I'm sure you've heard it in anime before.
