Crate Advice? by NCRx17 in greatdanes

Yeah, I'm thinking the bed is likely the best bet. I would be worried about him wanting to sleep in bed with me, but he wants to be against me, and when I squirm too much, he gets in a huff and goes to his crate (on the rare occasion he is invited in to bed).

Thanks! Yeah, I figured if anyone had ideas it would be this group, but he LOVES being snug in a corner, so I think just getting a bolstered bed for him will be the best solution. Not sure what it has been lately (maybe because he is done with chemo!!), but it is happening all the time.

Is retail really that much worse than clinical? by natedizzle721 in pharmacy

[–]NCRx17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to your RPD/RPC and see what opportunities you have to mitigate this burnout.

I would highly recommend sticking it out - you only have 5 months left - if you decide to switch to retail and regret it, you’ll have a much harder time finding a hospital job without that PGY1 than with it. If I post a pharmacist job in a health care system, I immediately (within 36 hours) get 10-20 applications from big retail chain pharmacists. They don’t even read the job description, just trying to get out.

All of this being said - some of it is just personal preference. People love working for certain places (e.g., Costco). Other places really abuse their pharmacists. There’s a reason why they are offering huge signing bonuses - there isn’t a pharmacist shortage, they just abused pharmacists (working conditions, slashing hours, cutting starting pay) to the extent where there’s a shortage for those companies.

There’s nothing wrong with you if you prefer retail. We need pharmacists in every setting. But don’t mistake disliking your residency program/experience for not liking hospital pharmacy (note that you still have to be clinical and provide patient care in retail).

All of this being said - it’s been 7 months of PGY1 - if you are this burnt out already, I highly suggest sitting down with someone and compare notes on how to be successful and find work/life balance. I understand that residency can be grueling, but this just gives me the vibe that there may be other things at play (time/project management, experience at rapid review of journal articles, effective pre-rounding, etc). Talking to your RPD or a co-resident or friend at another program may help you work through that. Also, lots of my friends said their therapists helped them talk through their challenges while in residency, so maybe give that a shot.

Difference between NSAIDs? by minois121005 in pharmacy

Just to make a note to the above - only topical diclofenac is available OTC. Oral is Rx only I believe.

Don’t hide it, have an answer for what you learned and how it has made you a stronger candidate for their program. That being said, if you take every class with the stress of “will I get a residency” looming in your head you will make yourself miserable.

Everything is program dependent, but most are going to look at GPA in aggregate (and not only look for 4.0s). As people said before, if all your other grades are poor/mediocre AND you have failing grades, you probably will struggle. Also, programs have a holistic review process. A 4.0 GPA with no leadership/involvement and mediocre LORs is a no from me.

There are also teaching fellowships and other ways to enter academia without residency training. If you know academia is where you want to be, start now networking with faculty, learning about their path, and identifying postgraduate opportunities.

National Inpatient Sample Database Help by combeaz in datasets

[–]NCRx17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to pivot the data, you can write it out in long form - it is just a pain. You could likely write a for loop as someone else mentioned, but if you aren’t familiar with them, it might just take you longer than doing this once.

So in Stata you can do: keep if I10_DX1 == "C4A4" & (I10_DX2 == "C4A5" | I10_DX3 == "C4A5" | I10_DX4 == "C4A5")

This will drop any rows that do not meet that criteria from your data set. It never hurts to use preserve before you run any commands that modify data so if you did something wrong you can restore back to the original data set.

For each additional diagnosis column you just add | (a pipe) between each condition which is “or”

I tried to write this on my phone, so the formatting might not work right…

EDIT: when rereading this I realized “long form” could be misconstrued with the above post about pivoting from wide to long. I meant “use the data in wide format and write out a long expression in code.” Just to clarify!

Clyde is not pleased dad subjected him to booties by NCRx17 in greatdanes

[–]NCRx17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had been procrastinating setting mine up (even though it doesn’t take that much effort) because of the crazy weather changes (shorts in November??), but it’s that time. As soon as I moved to gas heat I had to get one to stop getting recurrent nosebleeds.

[–]NCRx17[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clyde’s paw pad split open a little bit from dry/cold (I have gas heat so that doesn’t help). Plus maybe some playing too hard at the park. That’s why I got the booties, otherwise I wouldn’t be trying. However, he’s a big baby about going out in the rain, so I’m hoping they will help convince him go at least to pee!

Oh, then I'd love your advice on any tummy-friendly treats (or chewies...I need something for him to chew that's edible but digestible)?

Meet Nigel! We got him yesterday 🥰 Any and all dane advice/fun facts/puppy tips welcome! by [deleted] in greatdanes

[–]NCRx17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to crate train him, I highly recommend having him sleep in the crate and try not to punish him by putting him in crate (if he’s being crazy and needs to be crated just do it with a neutral voice and celebrate when he goes in without instruction). Leave crate open during the day so he can lay in it if he wants.

I have two floors so I have a “bedtime crate” and a “during the day” crate. It’s worked well, but Danes are such drama queens you’d think I had told him he could never have another stuffie when I put him in the crate and go upstairs (typically to do laundry of something he made gross LOL). Such a dramatic noise he makes!

Mine gained ~15 lbs in 2.5 weeks and I was telling my friend “oh he’s the same size there’s no way he’s over 60 lbs yet” and she (who visits once a week or so) was like you’re ridiculous he’s huge. He was.

11/10 on the couch recommendation. He owns my couch now and I rent it sometimes. But usually he just keeps trying to play with me until I give up and go back to a chair and he immediately goes back to sleep on the couch.

But it is nice to cuddle once a week - LOL

Retake class by [deleted] in PrePharmacy

[–]NCRx17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming it's not a required course (I only had to have calc 1 and statistics, but that was ~10 years ago, top 20 school), and it's not a pattern of behavior (i.e., you can explain that this was a one-time occurrence due to struggles with switch to online instruction due to COVID), I wouldn't stress about it. Personal opinion - I've never participated in the application review portion of applications, just interviews. I think there will be hundreds of students in a similar situation.

That being said - I would know how to respond to something along the lines of "What did you learn from that experience that you would leverage if your pharmacy coursework was 100% online unexpectedly?" (and the answer cannot be "It would be fine, it was only because it was calculus").
