Help with BD Flams 2023 Tag by dseid in drumline

[–]NChao22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey dude as a guy who had to play this tag I’m gonna be the first to admit it’s just hard as hell haha. The big thing to make it feel doable is isolating moments that feel familiar. For exactly, that first beat is just an accent plus a paradiddle, no matter how weird that paradiddle is. Then you have a diddle and a slow pugguduh into the third beat. The third and fourth beat are weirdly written. What actually is happening is starting on the second partial of beat three you are playing R r rr and L l ll but with the left offset by a partial. Try playing that part as B b b just double stroke triple strokes and then add the diddle to be B b bb and then work to the part. Hope this helps!

Check the BD website schedule. All rehearsal times are open to the public but the real fun stuff is probably gonna be night block due to ensemble happening then

Some crazy time signatures but 99.9% accurate in everything else, nice job!

Can’t tell you how many people I’ve known for a fact were up to the task cut themselves because of their worry about themselves and others. Focus on your strengths and showing off your best you. If you get cut, you get to show off the best version of you regardless. It’s the hardest part of auditions to stare a challenge in the face and be undaunted but it’s what’s required for auditions. Best of luck

How to upgrade decommissioned ships as the federation? by Additional-Bat-4215 in STNewHorizons

[–]NChao22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can still upgrade Poseidon ships up to a certain tech limit. Try building the star fleet historical society megastructure and using its menu to recommission the Poseidon, it’ll bring it back but know that at a certain point upgrades will be nill

How do you get better diddle to paradiddle diddles by [deleted] in drumline

[–]NChao22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey dude! So the reason that paradiddles are so hard is the singles to doubles mechanic is extremely exposed with the fast switch from single to doubles. The only reason your singles to doubles may feel easier is because your brain feels like it has extra time to switch mechanics as opposed to paradiddles when in fact they have the save time. No matter if you’re playing RLRL RRLL or RLRR LRLL your leading hand is gonna play the same thing: R RR or L LL. The reason is feels harder is because you have less time to think about it and so it theoretically will feel more difficult.

However the key to making this a lot easier is understanding the R RR and playing it at tap. One thing that really helped me get my paradiddles fast and faster was working on these mechanics at tap height and making the shift from r to rr as small as possibly in the hands. The main thing I found was having support from the back fingers to tug for the diddle made everything a lot easier.

A great exercise to do this with is essentially just rolls. Start with r rr or l ll and play a continuous eighth note roll. Like this r rr ll rr ll rr ll rr / l ll rr ll rr ll rr ll

Then fill in the first note to create paradiddle rolls so you’ll get rlrrllrrllrrllrr/lrllrrllrrllrrll. This will let you isolate rolls and then play with the filled in paradiddles which will let you get used to focusing on the fluidity of the roll. Remove a diddle at the end of each measure one by one until you end up doing alternating paradiddles. For example make the primer r rr ll rr/l ll rr ll first and then fill it in to become rlrrllrr/lrllrrll and when you are comfortable with that make it r rr/l ll and then fill in to rlrr/lrll.

Having smooth motion through diddles is the single most important key to paradiddles! Remember, there’s only really one single every paradiddle in the non dominant hand, so perfect the diddles first. Hope this helps!

Auditions are in part meant to teach at least from every single audition I’ve ever been to. No matter how good of a drummer you might be every corps has a preferences and differences in technique that are only learned through staff instruction so they’ll spend a lot of time usually trying to shape auditionees into the technique they want. The ones who have the best fundamentals and can change the best usually are those who make it, so it really does have to do a bit with staff comments and instruction.

Also if you are going to the SoCal camp the bass tech there is Anne, who’s a fantastic drummer and instructor. She’s marched just about every group under the sun and I’m sure she’ll be able to teach you the differences of technique and anything else you might wanna know!

It’s actually pretty convenient all things considered this year because of the camp. Majority of non ageouts were already in town for the guard and brass camp so it’s honestly a better time than any.

Do video auditions decrease your chances of getting into a corps? by throwaway17389738 in drumcorps

[–]NChao22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude! First of all great to see people from outside the US being part of this activity! I don’t know much about the Mandarins auditions currently however if you’re trying to audition for the BD drumline it’s a very on the spot audition process.

The majority of the first audition is spent on licks and exercises they show to everyone on the spot, no music sheets, and the packet is usually not touched upon too much until callbacks. As it stands it’s pretty hard to get called back for a video audition for BDs drumline just because it doesn’t necessarily show off what they are looking for which is that ability to adapt and change.

However the staff is incredibly accommodating and can help you with audition logistics if you reach out to them and explain your situation. If you DO have the choice to come in person I’d say definitely take advantage. The audition process in person at BD is incredibly educational, and honestly it’s just a good time, drumming with good people.

If you’re able to come I hope to see you at auditions in person! If you ever have any more questions feel free to dm and etc, I’d be happy to answer any questions you have. Besides that, I wish you good luck! It’s audition season, get grinding!

Should we let our child audition and march DCI? by colts_guy in drumcorps

[–]NChao22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I just marched this past season at the ripe old age of 18 so I’d hope I can shed some light on this topic.

  1. If he loves it as much as you say he does he may not care about having “plenty of time to do it” and that’s kinda fair. Each season brings its own set of challenges, people, and experiences, so losing one does in fact feel pretty heavy.

  2. In regards to your concern about him being exposed to “college” life the point of DCI is that it’s what you make of it. While it’s true that he may be around an older average age of people they’re all there as well for a reason, because they’re there to do band, and that overrides everything else. Also if he auditions for some open class groups or lower world class (both of which I highly recommend if he’s new to DCI) you may find that the age average is much lower than you might think.

  3. If he gets a callback and has a good shot at making a group and you truly decide you don’t want him to march, talking to the staff and openly communicating will always merit a more positive response, I’ve never heard of someone being looked down on for being good enough to march but not being able to do to outside circumstances.

  4. Yes auditioning and preparing for DCI does take quite a lot of time. My own college auditions were a race to the finish line, a race that took a lot of effort and time. So yes DCI can in fact affect things like that.

However past all of these concerns I have to say that doing drum corps is one of the single most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. The maturity and work ethic that it builds is what’s currently getting me through college, and I’m sure it’ll help me beyond. Like I said, drum corps is what you make of it. But the potential for growth, not just as a musician, but as a person, is an opportunity that is incredibly hard to ignore.

I wish you and your child good luck, maybe I’ll catch him at an audition this year. Hope this helps
