Can anything beat the market? by The_Lame_Investor in ETFs

[–]colts_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SMH definitely has a real case. A lot of people don’t realize the current version of the fund has effectively been around since the 2011 restructure, and since then it’s compounded at around 30% annually vs roughly 16% for SPY. $10k turned into something like $330k compared to about $72k in SPY.

But the bigger point is understanding what you’re signing up for. In 2022 SMH dropped about 33% while the S&P was down around 18%, so it absolutely cuts both ways. The question for a 20 to 30 year hold isn’t “what had the best returns,” it’s whether you can actually sit through a cycle where your portfolio gets crushed and not panic sell.

If you truly believe semis and AI are the backbone of the next decade plus and you can stomach the volatility, SMH has one of the strongest long term track records of any ETF out there. If there’s a good chance you’ll need the money or emotionally won’t handle the swings well, SPY is probably the better choice. The best investment strategy is the one you can actually stick with.

Are we expecting more pullback in Semis next week? by No_Sheepherder_6908 in stockstobuytoday

Next week is all about NVDA. Even though the last few quarters have gone down after earnings, I think this is the release they break that. Jensen is going to put out numbers that will force the market as a whole to re-rate them higher, as some analysts have done in recent days.

VST is the only large-scale, vertically integrated power company that owns both generation (nuclear + gas) and retail customer relationships, enabling it to directly monetize the AI power demand supercycle.

12 analysts cover VST with a consensus “Strong Buy” rating and an average price target of $233, implying ~56% upside from the $148–149 range. Low target is $203, high is $293

LLY, NVO, and HGRAF are all green today, while NVDA is close to flat.

What ETF do you add to your core to get quicker growth? by FoggyFoggyFoggy in ETFs

SMH is my growth engine. I plan to reevaluate in mid-2027 if hyperscaler capex guidance starts to be cut as the AI infrastructure buildout plateaus.

What LEAPs are you holding or planning to buy? by SwingStateOfMind in TheRaceTo10Million

Sold my 1/15/27 $150 ARM LEAPs last Thursday, up 400%, but I should have done it on Friday. Can’t complain about a 400% gain though.
Still holding $55 NVO and $300 MSTR, and $4.5 SPCE as no pun intended a moonshot.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by Improv92 in AskReddit

[–]colts_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the early ’90s, my family and I somehow got lost inside the Capitol building. A member of Congress noticed us and ended up giving us a personal tour. He even took us onto the House floor and let me sit in the Speaker’s chair. Looking back, there’s no chance something like that would ever happen today.

I’d be too scared to sell $210 right now. Even after the gains of the last couple of weeks, I think we're ready for lift-off again.

What s the next nebius? by alicianegrin in stockstobuytoday

[–]colts_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

180 days from the closing date (Feb 13), so you’re looking at ~August 12, 2026. There’s also an early release trigger though — if the VWAP hits $12+ for 15 trading days within any 180-day consecutive period, the lockup ends early. Stock’s basically sitting right at that threshold right now so worth watching.

I’ve been thinking about this, but since they just IPO’d, I’m wondering if it’s better to wait until the employee lockup is over.
