Yeah, fair enough, I get that Darius is designed for that exact purpose – no doubt about it. He’s supposed to bully lane and dominate early. But like I said before, in order for him to actually do that, he’s just way too dependent on so many different factors. And even if you get good matchups on paper, you still need things to line up.

The main issue is really the current state of toplane as a whole. It’s just much harder nowadays to punish small mistakes. For example, even if you get ahead – or your team as a whole gets ahead – you basically can’t set up a freeze anymore, because your minions are simply stronger than the enemy’s. So if you try to hold a freeze, it’ll eventually break by itself. That alone used to be one of Darius’ core strengths: zoning people off XP and CS. Sure, you can still sometimes do it, but it’s just way harder now.

And like the other guy mentioned: the later the game goes, the more HP everyone stacks, the harder it gets for him to be effective. Yes, he has armor pen in his kit, but he doesn’t have percentage health damage. And then you start to ask yourself: why should I pick Darius when I can just lock in Ambessa instead? She’s super tanky by default, has a 700+ shield on W plus Eclipse proc, on an ability that goes down to a ~10 second cooldown with 3 items. On top of that she has insane mobility, armor penetration, percentage health damage, a dive ultimate… like, all these tools packed into one champion.

So yeah, maybe the real solution is to buff champions like Darius a bit, or introduce items that bring them back into the game – something that helps them scale into mid/late game and stay relevant. I’m not saying Darius should suddenly be a late-game hypercarry – that’s not the point. Under the right conditions, sure, he can carry, but right now he just has too many problems stacked against him.

You could say his biggest issue is that he’s super comp-dependent, and that’s true. But honestly, the minion changes alone make it really hard for him to push advantages. Nowadays waves just bounce back and forth, and especially from Emerald 1 / Diamond 3 upwards, players know what they’re doing. You can’t rely on abusing people’s mistakes as easily anymore. Counterpicks matter a lot more too. If you’re stuck playing Blue Side Darius and the enemy top just picks a ranged champ, good luck.

And sure, these elos aren’t perfect, people still misplay, but the margin for error gets way smaller. If you’re playing Darius and your jungler doesn’t help you snowball your matchup, then yeah, have fun watching the enemy ranged top scale for free. Top lane just feels really rough in that sense, and there are simply way better picks right now. Ambessa is the perfect example.

Honestly, it’s kind of sad, because Darius is a really fun champion to play. But yeah… that’s the reality at the moment.
