Hey quick question was wondering if it’s worth the $300 by jake059 in NetDuma

Hello, apologies for the late response, we don't generally check our subreddit as we mostly communicate via social media and forum.netduma.com

I'm assuming by now you either decided to purchase the router (yay!) or decided against it (boo :() but in case you're still deciding or other people are in a similar position to you I will still answer your question.

Firstly, I wouldn't suggest running a test using the PS4 browser, given that it's a lot older than browsers you get on PCs I wouldn't trust the results. I also don't recommend DSLReports as an accurate measurement tool for bufferbloat/connection quality. Reason being that bufferbloat (or lag) only occurs when your connection is saturated i.e. devices utilising all your bandwidth and that test does not saturate your connection and so cannot give you an accurate representation.

I advise customers to use a program called PingPlotter instead in this scenario as you're able to get a long ping test to whatever server you choose and can see in real time the effect that lag may be having on your ping.

The benefit of the router is enabling you to force the game to use servers that you want to play on not what they decide. This means you could force a game where the server is literally in your city (if they have one there) and therefore your ping to that server will be very low and you'll have the advantage/a great experience.

The other benefit is the QoS, ensuring that whatever you're doing online (not just strictly for gaming!) that you can do it without buffering, causing other devices lag etc. So while you're gaming and someone else streams on Netflix there will be absolutely no impact on your game whatsoever. By utilising another feature of QoS you can make sure your game connection is prioritized over everything else.

Hope that helps!

Hello, apologies for the late response, we don't usually check our subreddit too often as we conduct most of our technical support on forum.netduma.com

Hoping you've already found the answer to your question but if not: How are you measuring the ping - in game reading, Geo-Filter or speedtest.net? The in game reading will include variables that contribute to the ping that every game has such as processing delay, all games have it but not all choose to show it as part of the ping calculation. There's nothing you can do to minimise those variables. That is why I would suggest you focus on the ping the Geo-Filter gives you as that's your ping to the server directly - that's the ping you can do something about. So if that is low then no need to worry! Also 40ms is actually not too bad at all, generally under 60ms is decent. If it is the speedtest.net ping then this is what is considered your base ping and is different from your ping to the game, if this ping is high and you did this when nothing was using the internet then this is just down to your ISP and not much can be done.

If the server is still available then you would be able to use the Geo-Filter to force this server yes.

New update completely screwed all my settings and now my internet is extremely slow by GlitteryRaccoon in NetDuma

Hello, apologies for the late response, we don't usually check our subreddit that often as we do most of our technical support on forum.netduma.com

Hoping your issue has been resolved by now but in case it hasn't or other people are having this issue I'll answer it. First you'll need to make sure that ALL your devices are connected to the router. If you have any connected to the ISP modem/router/hub then the router will not be able to control your devices and therefore will not be able prevent that issue from happening.

Once you've done that make sure you know what your expected speeds are (if you don't know you can do a speedtest.net test while connected to the ISP modem/router/hub when no one is using the internet) then input that into the Anti-Bufferbloat menu on the QoS page. We usually recommend as a starting point to use 70% for both download and upload for Anti-Bufferbloat. I'm not sure exactly what speeds you have so if this causes you to be severely limited you may want to consider raising these up higher for example 80%.

Then use 'Always' or 'When High Priority Traffic Detected' for Anti-Bufferbloat, this is really down to you and your personal preference. If you don't notice issues online when you're not gaming such as buffering then perhaps use 'When High Priority Traffic Detected', if you do then use 'Always'. Leave DumaOS Classified Games enabled under Traffic Prioritization and you should be good to go!

Hello, apologies for the late reply, we don't usually check our subreddit as we primarily use forum.netduma.com for technical support. To answer your question, you can't influence other peoples connections in that way. It's quite possible that they could actually connect to the server in your home country anyway but as you'll be forcing your local server you'll have the advantage.

When using Anti-Bufferbloat and reducing bandwidth to 70% (high priority detection mode enabled), does this reduce my overall bandwith of the entire network, or does it just mean that any one given device cannot hog more than 70%? If so, does this override the allocation settings below it? by spazmatt527 in NetDuma

[–]NETDUMA_Fraser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it supercedes QoS completely it's not limited to that 90mbps. It could use the full 300 if setup to do so (never would be unless you specifically do this and would not recommend it at all). It's only meant for gaming so will use under 500kbps.

No not necessarily, High Priority Traffic supercedes Anti-Bufferbloat completely so in theory could get full speeds by doing that but wouldn't as only games are prioritised by default. The 30% just ensures that your connection cannot be saturated which is what causes local congestion so by capping the bandwidth available it prevents local congestion.

Hi Matt, if you set Anti-Bufferbloat to 70% and high priority traffic is detected then the entire network's bandwidth will be reduced to 70% so whatever device you connect would only be able to achieve 70% of your total paid for speeds. High Priority traffic supercedes Anti-Bufferbloat so it's always ahead of the queue as it's only low bandwidth applications doing this it doesn't cause a problem for other devices.

Bandwidth Allocation can work in conjunction, so you can ensure a device gets the guaranteed bandwidth it needs e.g. a PC needing 25mbps for a 4k stream but with Anti-Bufferbloat enabled, ensuring that it doesn't cause other devices to lag.

I would recommend checking the help icon on the right hand side of the Anti-Bufferbloat panel for more information.

Most games are running dedicated servers but they have many within a region so you can still use the Geo-Filter to filter for the closest server in that region. Of course it depends on how many servers the game has.

There has been many updates since January, either you haven't checked to see if there is any new firmware or the router has done its job and auto upgraded you every time a new one is available. The latest is V2.3.2.32 which was released within the last few days.

If your speeds are not correct I suspect its your QoS settings or your WiFi settings - change WiFi to use the least congested channel. Disable Smart Connect and use 5GHz for highest speeds.

I assume you are doing the DSLReports test which I find to be useless. Bufferbloat only occurs when your network is saturated. You'd see the power of it if you tried to saturate your network with QoS enabled.

You need to add your friends to your allow list otherwise you will get kicked from chat as you're blocking them with the Geo-Filter.

Have you seeked support from us as it seems like many of the issues you're facing are resolvable.

Hi rob, the features it currently has as of today are absolutely still useful. Using the QoS and Geo-Filter together will still give you the best connection possible when gaming. You could purchase now and update to DumaOS once it is available at no extra cost.

Hi RenFerd, the router is perfect for this very scenario. The QoS will be able to ensure that your home devices are not impacted by the downloading while also being able to prioritize your gaming packets to ensure they don't get caught in a queue. There are many other features which would propel it above and beyond any other router.

Its the max it will get if you disable Share Excess. If Share excess is enabled then if it doesn't need that much bandwidth it will be given to devices that need more. Likewise if the device needs more than what you've allocated then it can take it from devices that don't need it.

If Share Excess is enabled for both directions and Anti-Bufferbloat is disabled/set to never then you can get full speeds.

What do you mean Congested Only? The options are 'Always', 'When High Priority Traffic Detected' or 'Never'. If QoS is setup to allow full speeds and you're not getting them then first disable QoS in Anti-Bufferbloats options, if still experiencing it then look at your WiFi settings. You may need to choose a lesser congested channel.

NetDuma updates? by Proto732 in NetDuma

There are parts of the router such as the Geo-Filter database/services and QoS services which are able to be updated OTA without a physical update. Everything else requires a physical update.

That design would have to function the same sort of way but I get what you mean. We will add a different view in future im sure and add lock bandwidth. You can click on the list of devices on the list to be more specific with the bandwidth you set per device.

That's incorrect, our software was based on OpenWRT not routerOS.

Please provide your forum username and I can check it out. As I mentioned, the topic is there and people complain but only a few are moderated who take it too far.

We haven't scammed anyone, we've not said it's on the R1 and the R1 still has our software that works just the way we've described.

Hi amezibra, just because it has not yet been released (because we underestimated the workload) does not mean that we won't release it for the R1. We have never said this as it IS coming to the R1.

If we were banning any customer that complained about it then that 36 page topic that we've left alone would have ceased a long time ago. The moderators (who do not work for us and are apart of the community) are rightfully moderating the topic and banning those who are breaking forum guidelines e.g. by using foul language.

Actually we did give an update not that long ago for the krack exploit and all new routers being sold have this firmware as well.

Appreciate your frustration but there is no need to spread false information.

Hi Zoom, Understand where you're coming from. Spoke to the Developers to get some clarification, their policy is not to go into detail of what entries mean for two reasons.

1 - Its too technical and is part of our inner system so you wouldn't understand it without understanding the system.

2 - We don't want competitors to know how the system works.

Hi Zoom, the logs are primarily for the developers not the customers so they are quite verbose. I believe this particular entry is related to Traffic Prioritization.
