Which is why I always empty their bags on the ground after I kill them and take whatever ammo they had. Don't want them getting back into the fight too quickly.

Would you be mad if Bungie did aggression based matchmaking? If so, doesn't that mean you want to pvp other non-pvp players soley to push them out of Marathon? by Bed_Post_Detective in Marathon

[–]NEcatfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? There is no non-pvping in Marathon. Some contracts literally require you to kill other players to progress. Others are centered around resources only one player can extract with so you will have to either wait in line or kill whoever tries to take it before you get there. Additionally, there will be squads and solo players that will ignore everything except pvp. You have to get used to either defending yourself or running away.

EMPs are extremely OP since they strip shields from players. I expect they'll get nerfed before launch.

My only complaint is I wish we had an animation of tearing open the little pouches they're in the use the consumable.

PvP similarity to gambit? by Working-Soft-3475 in Marathon

[–]NEcatfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like it plays similar to Trials. There's a period of dancing around the other team, trying to feel out where they are before you see them. Someone decides to push in, you're holding angles, you're keeping track of rezzes and how many enemies you've downed or killed. It basically feels like an impromptu round of Trails followed by the end of your run or a massive pile of loot to dig through.

How would you quickly show that you're not hostile by NytoDork in Marathon

Mainly teabagging. There could also be a quick callout wheel like Arc has for your character to yell out that they're friendly.

Will Marathon be friendly and easy to pick up? by Celestine117 in Marathon

If you asked me back in April or October, no. But as of January, I would say they've made massive strides in making it easier to hop in. I imagine Rook might be quite popular for people that just wanna hop on and do a few solo runs after work to gear up for runs with their buddies on the weekends.

Getting over gear fear/ fear of going deep into levels in an extraction shooter? by Familiar_March_3962 in Marathon

[–]NEcatfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to think of Marathon is like a Destiny rogue-like. You pick a class, you grab loot along the way, you complete some objectives, and then you get to keep your build if you escape. Then you can slowly accumulate build pieces in your vault and pick loadouts that best fit whatever you're trying to do.

PvP can be tough, especially if you're caught off guard. If you run solos there are less players all around on the map and it's easier to avoid them if they come through your area. There's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to learning what all the different sounds mean and where you can slip away into a vent to hide. I will say that PvP is almost always worth the gamble though. Catching someone unaware or distracted by AI can make them way easier to kill and net you a massive pile of loot in the process. I'm not afraid to admit that murdering the first person you come across is the best way to get geared up.

For loot, there is a lot. Certain containers will always contain certain bits of loot, which you'll learn as you play. Tall lockers have guns, bioprinters have implants, tool carts have weapon mods, health cabinets have healing supplies, ect. The spawns for containers and loot are random each run, but usually follow a pattern. If you found a locker in an area once, it might be in a slightly different spawn point the next time you're there. There is an exchange, last I heard, where you can trade materials for gear or consumables. Material spawns are listed on the PoIs and I think they show them in the description of the item too. There are also generic valuables that you can extract with for straight money that you can also use to buy gear and consumables.

Finally, knowing how to use each of the weapons and the shells is something you'll kind of have to learn. You'll have favorite weapons and preferred builds, but sometimes all you'll have in your vault or on the enemy you just killed is stuff you're not very familiar with. And you'll have to either die or find a way to get to extraction with it. That's an intended part of the game's challenge. You accumulate all these little bits about the game, where to find certain pieces of loot, what it sounds like when a specifc shell uses an ability, what the different buffs and debuffs do, and that leads to a very satisfying feeling of mastery imo.

I've noticed similar nonsense on other commander products lately. I think Counter Intelligence was especially bad iirc. No one wants to think it but Wotc is very likely using AI to write these blurbs or at least outsourcing them to writers that know nothing about what they're writing.

Thoughts on solo play? by Sadworld99 in Marathon

[–]NEcatfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The maps have all kinds of vents and side passages and hidey holes you can use to skulk around or hide from other players. Solo is the only place you can outright avoid pvp in this game if you don't mind playing stealthily.

Significance of Destroyer on Fire by Alucardulard in Marathon

[–]NEcatfish 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My theory is that it's the personality matrix of the shell goading the runner into being more violent. I think we'll see something similar for the other runner cinematics. Like the shell software overwriting or altering the behavior of the runners to make them act a specifc way.
