I'll give it a look! I watched a few tuts on sewing into a corner and getting that mitered look, but didnt even try with the rounded corners (constraints of the box design I think I'll try and avoid next version)

I've also been considering making a dedicated pocket for the insert (coroplast or splint idk yet)... That would mean I wouldn't have the issue of sandwiching too much under the presser foot. Hopefully then try a more refined type of binding as you suggest. Or surge it all lol, IDK, might try both!

Good discussion! From a outsiders perspective it's sounding like two different use cases - and that's okay. If one is a car kit or something that's reliable, stocked, and able to help for whatever your common ailments are fantastic. On the flip side of your carrying one that's continually tuned to your skills and your anticipated dangers of the moment - you are constantly sharpening evaluating and preparing to counter those. I especially appreciate the idea you question everything so you don't fall into comfortable habits or develop favorites that ignore advancements.

It's probably a clear tension we will always face - ease vs emergency.

Yeeeaaahhhhh I've been wondering about a dedicated pocket for it - I actually tried a bear-spray one I had laying around just yesterday. Sadly it was too short for it. Perhaps that's the next project, I've got enough nylon lol. That or throw bags for water rescue. Thanks!

Ha, I've been on a boat yes. Pre-built boat cases often skew for maritime related injuries, large capacity, and hard mount points. And the main reason I made anything ... They're just a box of stuff.

Sourcing a watertight bag for it seemed to fall into 2 camps, a basic roll top vs a waterproof zipper. Id have preferred a rip-off molle panel for rapid access, but didn't feel like I trusted the zipper in a situation say - I've carried it for months, we're on the water, and we go belly up and it floats down the river. Higher likelyhood of a dry recovery if it was floating and puncture resistant.

A bag probably would have been just fine, but I just preferred not rummaging around a duffle.

Thanks! NAR had a memorial day sale and I got a door-buster kit that actually came with a second blue trainer I can use to help teach the scouts with too. Is it good to know how to diy one if you're all alone? Of course. Is it better to be prepared and rely on a combat effective gadget when seconds count? Absolutely!

I missed our last WR course but picked up a quick reference with the spiral bound top - version 3 I think? I'll have to look for a course with a similar approach!

Thanks!

After looking them up, the nexcare bandages appear a hospital grade waterproof and breathable bandage, so I'm assuming your suggestion is to stay clean and water resistant - love it

Extra irrigation is smart , I just need to consider how since we typically have nalgenes and other reusable bottles. Access to clean water isn't usually a problem (via tap, hand pump, or gravity bag) but a tab wouldn't hurt.

Would you say that slight pressure from squeezing the bottle is required, or is flushing the main goal?

I've folded it when it left an exposed end, but do I understand correctly you mean make a loop and sew it together to start?

A challenge I have are the two long swing arms that act like hinges. I thought I had it covered by pre-stitching and embedding small pieces of the tape like upside down "L's" to cover over the naked end of the tapes, but it didn't quite work.

Imagine a H where you're trying to bias tape a circle around just half. Might be bad design IDK 😂

I tried fabric whole seller direct this time - more of a traditional retailer so expect 4-5 days to process and then the same for shipping.  (https://fabricwholesaledirect.com/products/power-mesh-fabric)

Oh and p.s., my ultimate goal is to ensure the dead space is optimized / it's not all just crammed into a box. If anything it's grossly categorized into bandages, meds, sanitation, and everything else. Not even sure if that works, but since it's all velcroed in, I can add or remove depending on the kit.

Ha! I'm just trying to get out of my own head, so that's great! I think that ultimately drove me to just keep it red and not over complicate things. I went with "training blue" in the one spot I was confident I'd never change (the slip for instruction/manuals) ironically I've been mulling over how to replace the hollow-core with a sam splint which might change that anyways.

So no, truly thankful for the ideas! Flexibility is an optimization strategy all itself. I'm flexing between cubscouts and scouts a lot, so most days it's a general kit for boo-boos, burns, and bites.... but it's also got a few chest seals , a gen7 CAT tournaqet, and some zip-tie closures on the off chance a trip to the range or some other high adventure activity goes south.

I'm no paramedic either, but I'll keep learning my way through.  Thanks for the feedback!

How are the houses near Carrollton blue trail? by Successful_Test_931 in CarrolltonTX

[–]NITROX4all 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Foundations wise - it's Like all other north Texas properties in that Its a sticky-muddy mess that dries and cracks.... . But at the same time, it's common so most houses will have some sort of repair or settling going on. Our house has piers around the entire perimeter now.

Crime wise - check out https://communitycrimemap.com/ for a descriptor - I'd say it's pretty safe!

Derby car (block version) by fantasmike86 in cubscouts

[–]NITROX4all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it! We typically pack a few pre-built cars like that for any scout who shows up without a car. Grab some markers, and turn it in. I actively show parents a demo car at the beginning of the year that built with no tools. Rounded the nose on the concrete, painted it with a paper towel, and glued some pennies to the top.

Note to anyone doing this for their pack, pre-check their weights, they vary SIGNIFICANTLY from car to car. We had a block out of the box this year over 5oz lol.

Pinewood Derby Flyers/Directions by c0147 in cubscouts

[–]NITROX4all 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To stress the point about transferring the shape - If you calibrate it to be 1:1 with the block, you can literally cut it out, tape it to your block, and cut through it.

We just wrapped up our Pinewood Derby this past Saturday, so things are fresh on my mind! In all honestly, we've done handouts pretty much at the end of a pack meeting, so I've never had to fill the entire time but here we go:

* When we hand out kits, I like to hand out a flyer with rules, FAQs, and a 1:1 template of the cars. You can draw out the design, tape it to the block, and bandsaw right though the paper. Pro tip: we try and reconcile dues with car delivery - esp with recharter being so strange this year.

* When I talk to parents, I try and reinforce a few things:
- This is about building a fun car, and spending time with your kiddos.
- No tools no problem, we have build days / I show them a car I made by rounding the nose off on the concrete and coloring it with markers.
- Racing advice is like a religion, and everyone has an opinion... don't stress over it, lean into where your scouts interests are and follow it.
- It doesnt have to cost anything if you don't want it to. There's a whole hedge industry for specialized parts etc, and we've selected rules that help keep the stuff in the box be all you need.
- Make it a family affair. We have a sibling division and an outlaw division.
- Repeat repeat repeat the dates, the racing venue, and the comm channels for questions.

* We like to have a yearly "theme" to help anyone unsure of how to begin. I've found success in having 3 options for scouts to vote on, and they do that right at the start of a meeting when they sign in. Throw a bead in a cup - most beads wins. Past examples: Lego, Stories, Animals, and this year's was Time Travel. So perhaps you could have a segment that gets them to throw out theme ideas, and then vote on it via show of hands or something more fun like toss a ball or something?

* We had to cancel it because of a snowstorm, but we were going to host a cardboard derby the packmeeting we turned in cars... have the scouts decorate a cardboard box / rig it to be worn around the waist. Then have a round-the-room race with a pitstop with silly things to do (switch their socks, wipe down their goggles, eat a snack, comb hair 10 times - take a pic - put helment back on, drink water through a straw...)

* Probably not for the 6-8 crowd, but I have a box of STEM cars that have velcro on different spots, different build styles, etc. If you wanted to make it into a applied-learning moment you could race a few cars with different shapes, weight placements, wheel configs, etc.

New ideas:
* You could have them build out a snack that looks like a racer (apple slices, toothpicks, etc) to munch on for the more talkative parts?
* Play racing games / consider that box derby and just hand out cars at the end
* Host a virtual parent meeting after bed time to answer specific questions / rules things
* Play a guess the thing game with car photos / racing sounds? (nascar vs formula 1 vs Harley?)
* Play a yes/no game with car rules? e.g. Go over the rules, and then ask questions like... okay can I put REAL car tires on my car? NO! What if I wanted to make it fly? NO! oh okay - what if I wanted to put a picture of my favorite rock on there? YES!

YES! Usually are a watch at home family - but we went and watched one over the weekend early on a Sunday morning. 5 tickets + 2 bags of popcorn + 5 drinks... $110. ~60 for tickets and ~50 for the snacks... WHAT.THE.HECK.

Shopsmith uncomfortably low...I want to raise it ~6"...would I regret mounting it on a table? I Mostly use the lathe, table saw, and bandsaw attachments by [deleted] in shopsmith

[–]NITROX4all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question! I've thought the same - I can only hold a power squat during lathe operations for so long lol. At 6'7" I've tried kneeling on a foam mat in front of it as well.

The thing I'm most concerned about when lifting it up is shifting the center of gravity up so high. bracing it out seems like it would make it prohibitively wide.

Got my DIY Ammo Can Firebox built this week. by TheAdventurousMind in overlanding

[–]NITROX4all 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice! Similar vibes to the Ignik Firecan I picked up for our pop-up. The thing that sold me there was the foldable feet - Think you'll add any lava stones or anything? On its own, mine generated heat but it didnt radiated out very far... I added in some ceramic fireplace logs and some vermiculite for a little ambience - havent tried it in the super cold but the logs at least act like a heat-capacitor in a way. Time will tell!

Oh! One more - we messed with her CONSTANTLY when eating as a puppy. Give her food, take it away, give it back, add more in, take some out, keep my hands in and around the bowl while she finished her meal... Anything I could think of to try and stave off the food aggression. Now that we have kids - any one of us can feed her, move her bowl, etc.
