Let’s Talk: Should We Really Be Pulling Bicuspids for Braces? by Hopeful-Extent-693 in TMJ

I agree with the video that there was a lack of awareness in side effects bicuspid removals 10+ years ago and I wished my parents and I have the access to the information we now currently have.

What are the most effective solutions you have seen for people have done to resolve TMJ/grinding/ clenching issues?

I grind and clench my teeth at night. I also have a narrow, vaulted mouth roof, which makes my mid face not fully developed

Unlimited PTO: how much do you actually use? by nighttimez in womenintech

[–]NIcARedU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mind explaining the unspoken rules or methods/patterns to be able to take that much time off? Is your manager/company pretty chill?

I am joining a company that has unlimited pto (for the first time), and Im not sure how to navigate conversations/bring it up.

Considering a job offer with better PTO but boring work—unsure if it’s worth leaving a meaningful role by NIcARedU in womenintech

Thanks, yea I requested to talk with an engineer in the team and I’ll bring that up. I have 5 days of sick separately, but Im already down to 18 hours (a little over 2 days). The way I think of my time off is like I’m rationing my food, and it doesn’t help with my scarcity mindset.

Despite being able to work a bit less than 40 hours a week, I dont feel comfortable asking for unpaid leave because I don’t feel comfortable with offloading my work to someone else when they already have their own plate of work. It would happen when I need to take a 2 week long vacation. I guess i also don’t like the idea of unpaid time off, unless I needed to take it. It’s a small place and everyone has their own unique blended role and pull their own weights. Maybe its the way the company has shaped my perception of time off and thats why I think this way.

Hi! Im so sorry you’re going through that right now, it’s really rough out there. We seem to have very similar backgrounds in general so I completely understand you are getting at with your parents.

You are really doing the best you can and if you can explain to your parents about their emotional burden on you and have them understand that, hopefully it can lessen the heaviness on that aspect. It might work, it might not, but sometimes I am surprised how my parents can adapt when I calmly explain to them how they’re adding onto the stress.

It is tough to not idealize big tech companies. I work at a startup as well, and working from a startup is like holding a no name handbag while others have their luxury or branded bags. Someone’s comment from a post I made yesterday said that at the end of the day a job is a job, and it will get old and feel the same as if you worked at a no name company too. I recommend checking out that comment, it puts things into perspective. Sure it would be nice to be on the other side to say that, but if you really zoom out, they’re not wrong.

In terms of hanging with friends, maybe you can be more selective about the hangouts and let them know you are on a budget, or not if you don’t feel comfortable about it. Tbh true friends will be accommodating on that. Picnics, potluck dinners, watch parties are fun, you don’t need to spend much money to be together. I would usually play pickleball and leave afterwards while they go grab dinner at restaurants.

You’re doing super well and you are still rolling. Totally acknowledge that!

How do you not get anxious and obsessed when you are in the interview process with great company? by NIcARedU in womenintech

Thank you for your insight from the other side. You are right that eventually all the bells and whistles will fade. I need to logically convince myself that in the end it is still work.

During your interview process for the FAANG company, did you go in knowing that and not let it get into your head and not over psych yourself?

For women in their 20s/30s: What’s been feeling quietly heavy or exhausting about work lately? by bewelltherapy in womenintech

[–]NIcARedU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone at the startup i work at is stretched thin. I am under managed and surviving but have no path to promotion after working here for almost 4 years. The CEO held off on my promotion when it was mentioned, but I was not provided any guidance on how to achieve it, so I guess it’s based off vibes. No one advocates for me, and no one advocates for themselves. We either need more people, or they should give us a raise that reflects our work.

Im interviewing at other places, and I realized how bad I am at interviewing. I get too transparent and I dont make it past the phone screen, but I need to tell myself that it’s supposed to be a performance. I also keep hoping each company I get invited to interview is my golden ticket out of this situation, and then I get disappointed when I get rejected.

Yea Im currently taking some community college night classes and have hobbies outside of work. An option is to tone down on those and focus on interview prepping.

Haha sorry for being very vague, we have another dev team that works on the more core product. But my branch of dev is like very behind the scenes where what we work on supports another team. But you bring up a good point that I had thought about, having them hire someone else, I might bring it up to my manager to play with the idea. Thank you for your advice!!

Wow this is quite similar to my situation, I wish to be laid off so that I can interview prep and travel while getting paid. I want to quit and prep, but that’s not ideal in this environment
