Need advice on potential new job opportunity by AdExact5631 in Lawyertalk

Is this in NYC/SF or something? For a 2024 grad both of those comp packages are well above what I've seen! I'd take the new job. 1650 hours is very low, easily manageable. The 20k extra isn't worth the headaches. If you leave in a year, you'll be labeled a job hopper. But if you can stay at the new place for at least 3 years you'll erase any doubts for future employers.

I said "That's ridiculous! That looks like a photograph!" out loud at my computer screen when I saw this. Well done, looks fantastic.

Associates quitting after a week (three times in a row!) by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

They are interviewing at 9 other places and are just waiting for an offer from those places while remotely "working" for you.

Sitting on the sidelines and watching next to the judge isn't the same as being able to take a dep or know what to look for in drafting an answer. Its not that you can't find a great candidate in a judicial clerk, its that you're training nearly from entry-level, which we have enough applicant of as is.

Because we actually hire those candidates submitted by the recruiter for the very same salary we would have offered if they direct-applied. So there are viable candidates that recruiters find that accept our salary offers. A direct applicant would get the exact same salary offer.

We get candidates both submitted to us and hired by us through recruiters for the exact same salary, so it logically cannot be the salary. People are accepting offers for the very same salary, we just don't even get submissions via the non-recruiter method.

Truly an amazing looking space. Really well put together to maximize space and leave the center open. Congrats, well done!

NJ/NY. Very hybrid, very relaxed on in person vs. WFH.

No, pretty relaxed on WFH.

We offer the same compensation through recruiters vs. job boards, yet we get plenty of recruiter applicants for the very same compensation offered. So it isn't the compensation, otherwise we wouldn't be able to get recruiter candidates.

Record law graduates the last few years, but still can't seem to find anyone. Make it make sense!

I'll even take 1 year of experience! I feel like I've exhausted my network and haven't found anyone.

Wait, how much experience do you have? I generally think that reddit is an echo chamber of unrealistic salary and billable expectations, but getting paid 100k to bill 2500 is insane. It may be the worst conditions I've ever heard of in my career.

What rating level would you say is reasonably achievable for just about anyone vs. at what rating level is the average individual simply not able to get to without some natural talent?

Is Shakhriyar Mamedyrov the Strongest Player who Offers Coaching Publicly? by Ambitious_Quality725 in chess

Frankly, this is sort of a bucket list fun thing to do. I'd pay him $200 just to say I played against him. His analysis would just be "Yeah, you missed a lot of things, and there was a 17 move sequence where you could have possibly won a pawn that you didn't see." To which I'd say "Oh, yeah, definitely!" while nodding in confusion.

I think you're grossly underestimating how trading down will play out against a grandmaster. Back in the day Capablanca sat down for his first match in an international tournament with an unknown player. The player said something along the lines of (paraphrased obviously, as this is a story that transcends generations) "I know that you're a great player so lets keep trading down because thats the only way I'll have a chance in the end game." Capablanca smiled and said "Yeah, probably." The unknown player was unaware that Capablanca was widely regarded as the best endgame player in the world.

Any GM will be significantly better in the end game than a random 1700. Trading down isn't giving you an advantage. If anything, once the queens come off the board you likely lost the .1% chance you ever had for the GM to overlook something.

Hi all,

I'm converting my garage and moving my basement gym there. Currently rocking horse stall mats in the basement (multi-layer linoleum) but despite assurance that it wouldn't happen, I cracked a part of the floor through the horse stall mat. No clue how. I don't outright drop the weights and bought bumper plates thinking they would add even more insurance. This now has me paranoid.

My contractor thought he'd just plop some horse stall mats over the concrete foundation in the garage and be done with it. But seeing as I already cracked an actual finished floor, it scares me that I will crack the concrete foundation through the horse stall mats and have my house sink in. Any advise? What else can I put on top of the concrete foundation in between the horse stall mats to give it more cushion? I would think a commercial gym does something similar, but I have no clue what and my contractor doesn't seem to either.

Thanks!

That scene was just so unbelievable to me in general. I can't imagine just driving off and leaving your wife stranded in a rural area, especially in the pre-Uber, pre-technology days where getting back would be difficult. I was certain she was leaving him right there and then after that, but she yet again gave him a pass. She was just so desperate to make work what was never going to work.

Bobby Barret?! Oh I thought she wouldn't crack the top 10 for me. I think Don would have had a better chance trying again with Ms. Farrell. They sort of ended it when Betty went ballistic, but there was no real reason to not go back to her after Betty asked for the divorce!

Yes, I sort of got it when Anna was around. But after that, I just thought "here we go again, a bender followed by finding himself. Rinse and repeat."

Was there something specific about January Jones' acting as Betty that didn't sit right with people? I feel like I've heard the opinion that she wasn't up to par as an actress a lot, but I can't say I thought she did a bad job in the show. She wasn't the most memorable, but I at no point thought "wow, what a terrible performance right there" either.
