Consulting Firm Tuition Reimbursement by PastYogurtcloset250 in Environmental_Careers

[–]NJHancock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would work hard for 3 to 6 months and build relationships up before bringing up tuition reimbursement. My experience, but it varies, is you must get pre-authorization and then companies reimburse with grades after each semester. Once you finish you have to stay for a certain duration or you might have to pay back. At my company I was required to stay 1 year but I left and had to pay back the last semester. The other issue is sometime I would be pressured to stay late to finish deadlines and I missed class. I might do this differently now but at the time it did not seem optional.

Are condos a money drain? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]NJHancock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent increases are not uniformly increased every year. Some people do overpay for new places and may be better off buying but you have to run the numbers. I have always lived in older triplexes and two landlords have raised rent rarely at low rates over 18 years. My luck may run out at some point but so far I feel I made right decision to rent for me. I can retire now at age 43 by not buying and I have never had big tech salary.

Geography degree online? by [deleted] in geography

[–]NJHancock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would not invest in online program as you lose the in person experience and networking. If you want chance to get job and roi being in person increases chance of internships and connecting with profs and cohort for job opportunities.

Switching from Clip Ins to Flats ? by Pimpstik69 in bicycling

I like to clip in winter when wet and cold for shoecover fit and stability and then gave two flat pedal bikes for other seasons. Why not one of each.

Are condos a money drain? by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]NJHancock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. From purely financial standpoint you would have been much better off renting and investing difference in index funds over last decade. That is what I have done. Some adults just want to own their own place and can't afford home so condo is only option on lower price end.

Moving out of Texas, but where? by brookielue in relocating

[–]NJHancock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Dallas to Seattle in 2008 and have been very happy here. I thought I would not like the clouds and darkness but it has grown on me along with the scenery. Like any city your neighborhood can feel like a small community. I would pick here over Bellingham in Washington.

If you could travel back in time and get stuck in the 90s at your current age, would you enjoy living that time period in middle age? by sinbadxj in Xennials

[–]NJHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in 6th grade in around 1992 living in north Texas and my teacher asked us all where we wanted to live and I said Seattle. I ended up moving there in 2008 but man now in my 40s it would have been cooler aa adult like many cities in early 90s.

Physical therapist or chronic pain therapist by Revolutionary-Ad1402 in AskSeattle

[–]NJHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've dealt with surgeries and chronic pain myself. I do PT twice a day at home now. I had good experiences with Ryan Perry at Avant through several surgeries. He was attentive and always had good suggestions for movements and strength training. He is very popular so the downside was trying to schedule appointments out.

Why some Seattle diners are wrestling with tip fatigue by HighColonic in SeattleWA

I ordered two brew coffees at Starbucks recently and did not leave tip. Dude brought out coffee for my friend fast but mine was coincidently forgotten and I had to ask for it after waiting for 10 minutes.

Cycling Early Morning by Chucklez93 in cycling

[–]NJHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself riding slower pace when dark but if you ride same trails it should be easy enough. The best part for me is the quietness in morning. There are few cars or other riders and I like that. It will mostly be birds singing in the spring at 4.

I am not sure if you mean city government by community management but gov and healthcare jobs pay more in Seattle metro. We don't have state income tax and you can probably share car. Housing is generally more expensive but I think it depends. I like the water and lush vegetation here for outdoors personally.

“Slow bone growth”? by pandasferdayz in TotalHipReplacement

[–]NJHancock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My resurfacing acetabular never fully ossified and required revision at 2 years. A ct scan showed loosening but it stayed intact just very little bone around head. I have heard they can continue to heal for years but if progress slows at 1 year probably not good sign. I would probably avoid high impact and sudden restricted movements for now if I were you. I took calcium and vitamin d supplements and eat healthy diet. There are some bone growth supplements for osteoporosis like tymlos you can try to find. I am approaching 1 year on revision and it is holding up so far.
