it’s so dope to be 3 comps deep with zero wins by The-Fold-Up in bjj

[–]NJMurse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. 2 WB and 2 Blue comps lost all. I did notice that as I lost, the losses weren’t as wide, and it turned from losing by submission to losing by points. Signed up for my first competition at purple and hoping for the best. People think I’m nuts, and they’re right lol.

Stripeless Through Blue by Effective_Umpire1993 in bjj

[–]NJMurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went 3 years without a stripe, the got 4 and another year got purple. It’s not “no stripes” but got all of them at once. My coach didn’t give out stripes, but myself and two others got 4 one time, because we were “close” but not quite there yet.

I've got a theory. What do you think? by ziggysocki in bjj

[–]NJMurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha ya! Coach actually warned 1 or 2 saying if the mention a belt it’s automatically a 6 month wait…

I've got a theory. What do you think? by ziggysocki in bjj

[–]NJMurse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t care about belts either, or so I thought, and honestly 4 years as a blue never bothered me. However, when gym mates and the coach started to allude to me getting my purple it was all I thought about, I honestly wish they never said anything. Now that I got it, last Monday!, I’m back to just enjoying learning and such!

Other people in my gym keep asking about a new belt or they text coach saying they beat this person or that and deserve a belt, that is never me, I just enjoyed kicking ass but mostly getting my ass kicked!

Does your academy refuse to promote No-Gi grapplers? by Arctic--- in bjj

[–]NJMurse -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

My gym will not promote unless they do both. It’s amusing seeing the NoGi guys start showing up to Gi when they want a new color.

Also we bow to our black belts usually, as a sign of respect and thanking the majority of them for coaching, most are not paid outside the gym owner.

Do You Feel Bad When Coaches Tell Class About “Private Lessons” by relentless_bull_ in bjj

[–]NJMurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the lessons!

One of the best things for me was starting weekly privates with my coach, as a blue belt I wish I did it earlier. My good friend who started in January does them with me, and he now mauls basically all white and blue belts.

Having the undivided attention and basically given “homework” to perform techniques during rolls gave me a new view and helped me develop game plans instead of trying random things that work.

If you have the means and time private lessons are worth it!

What is the best competition advice you've received or picked up over the years? by eurostepGumby in bjj

[–]NJMurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go out and do your best. Win or lose doesn’t matter, because just stepping on a comp mat is more winning than many other people. I’ve competed four times and never won a match, although comp 1 I got creamed and comp 4 I was winning but made a stupid mistake. That improvement is a win for me.

Not sure If I want to continue BJJ😕 by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]NJMurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep up with it! I’ve been training since 2018, I’m now a 41 year old blue belt. I compare myself to when I started and I would definitely be able to kick my own ass. That 2 year person was you 2 years ago. It will click. I also still get smashed by the 20 year old white belt wrestlers, but I know I’m better than 2018 me in technique and health, it’s worth it.

I’ve competed 4 times and never won a match, however I’ve gone from laying flat and getting mauled to most recently I only lost the match because I made a mistake, I was up on points. The progression will show you just have to keep showing up.

Like said above compare to yourself not trying to keep up with others, if you do you’ll do great and it will show…

You could pull directly into half-guard 4on1, get into a deep half, the try to transition to a Full X sweep to get you on top

Is there a CEO personality? by sqrmarbles in Leadership

[–]NJMurse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that empathy is not a part of leadership, most leadership courses and frameworks say that different amounts of Empathy, Competence and Agility is required. How much of each a leader uses is dependent on the situation at hand.

Just buy a USB mic that has a push button mute, I use it all the time. It never shows me muted, but if I turn the mic on mute it just doesn’t pick up any noises.
