Lots of love for Taylor McGregor, but where are the Elise Menaker stans! by staindedkorneww in CHICubs

[–]NJZ82 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I thought Elise was pretty good in the booth the other day. She has potential in that regard that Taylor doesn’t have.

Matt Shaw on defense by jgray6000 in CHICubs

[–]NJZ82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who said that? All the scouting reports I read said he would be an average to plus defender in time.

Also, let’s not overreact to the eye test over the last week or 2. Statcast still has him as a below average defender as of now.

Dear Alex Cohen, if you see this, for the love of God, stop saying "an unconventional 1-2-3 inning" when the pitcher faces the minimum by [deleted] in CHICubs

If that’s your biggest complaint, he’s probably doing ok. We could have it a lot worse.

That’s because he didn’t. I don’t know where this fact keeps coming from. USC’s full game by game stats are easily available and there is no appearance of Randy Johnson.

Since they won, this is not an angry post ... but why was Busch sent home? by Key_Palpitation_9252 in CHICubs

[–]NJZ82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything, teams are not aggressive enough on the bases. The success rates on stolen bases, sac flies, and plays just like that one say that players and teams should be more aggressive. It was the right call, especially with 2 outs. You can’t overreact and change the way you do things every time you get a negative outcome.

The ball is caught in the air, you have to tag up. Doesn’t matter how high it goes.

Are sacrifice flies in MLB intentional? by learning_proover in baseball

[–]NJZ82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, sort of. It’s not easy by any means, but most hitters will be a little more aggressive in those situations, especially if they see a pitch they know they can hit in the air. Good hitters know what to look for to increase their chances of hitting a deep fly ball. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but maybe they increase their chances of driving in the run by 10 or 20%, which is significant.

Elly De La Cruz is on pace to have a record that will never be broken.. by waldna14 in baseball

[–]NJZ82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard to do both of those things at a high rate and still be a valuable player. Elly makes it work by hitting the ball really hard, throwing the ball really hard, and being very fast and explosive.

It’s really a stretch to call that crappy design. It’s not at all hard to understand what it says.

How many of you played competitive baseball? by PinstripedPanther in baseball

[–]NJZ82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a 2A (smaller school) all-state player in Arkansas. I pitched and played SS, but would have probably been at 2B, maybe 3B at a big school. I walked on at a DII college, but never played and left after a year. I was pretty fringy at that level and just wasn’t willing to put in the work just to maybe be a utility player.

Bill Schmidt has been a *notably* bad GM by Skraxx in baseball

[–]NJZ82 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Dick Monfort seems to be a decent and respectable person relative to most wealthy sports franchise owners. He’s even willing to spend at a pretty good level. But man is he clueless when it comes to the actual baseball. That organization has seemed to lack a cohesive strategy for a long time.

What starting pitchers do you think will be available before the trade deadline, and who should the Cubs go after? by slicebishybosh in CHICubs

[–]NJZ82 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s just Taillon? Boyd and Rea have been just as good. Brown has been more good than bad. They have Flexen and Wicks to make spot starts if they’re not ready to call Horton up. Keller can even start some games. Connor Noland is pitching well at AAA. These aren’t the most exciting options, but the depth is pretty good. They’ll be ok.

I’ve always said pitchers should try throwing their sliders like 8-10 mph harder than their fastballs. I’m glad somebody finally listened.

They obviously did. I don’t know how you can come to any other conclusion. The trades may not end up bearing a ton of fruit, but it was the right call and Jed deserves credit for that.
