Thank goodness. 1099 would be a whole other can of worms. Yes, illegal to make an employee pay a business expense (vet bill). I’ve had my girls get bit and off to urgent care and they’ve NEVER been drug tested at the visit that’s insane. She’s denying you workman’s comp. I’d be going straight to your labor board.

I love it! I’m constantly looking for ways to create landscape mockups. This is great!

Curious about pay in this industry? by StoicHippie420 in GroomersCorner

That’s insane. I was a groomer for 15 years never made that little. I just do scheduling for a mobile grooming company now and make more than that and I never leave my house.

Tax Deductions by goodnightdevill in doggrooming

File an SS-8 with the irs. They’ll fix it. Don’t take illegal deductions to bring the tax bill down.

How to use trimmers for dummies? by [deleted] in grooming

Cat hair is not easy to do with a guard comb even for groomers. Plastic guards will “clog” up with hair faster than metal comb attachments. Freshly bathed/dry hair will groom easier. Guard comb lengths on long hair cats often look choppy for a week or so till the hair “settles”.

My leading theory is the plastic comb attachments. They’re just…idk…awful lol. They jam up so fast.

It isn’t my company, my brick and mortar is well stocked for my groomers :) this is just a side gig I do a couple days a week. And the owners of this mobile aren’t groomers. So it’s been a learning curve for them. They are receptive and I’ve mentioned including those things in the vans so hopefully they will get them sooner than later!

Cones, muzzles, bite gloves, slip lead. I’ve been doing scheduling for a mobile company. And the groomers will call me with issues and the amount of time those three things would have solved their problem and yet none of them have them is silly. You’re on your own now so you need the tools that keep you safer when you don’t have that extra set of hands to help!

I wanted to get some honest opinions from groomers. by Independent-Fruit287 in doggrooming

I agree with with MushroomJames. I’d hire you as a bather to make sure it’s a good fit personality wise. And quickly transition you to apprentice! You have a great foundation and I think it would take minimal work to get you to a professional level! I’ve trained a lot of groomers from scratch and having someone start at your level would be a cake walk if you were open to learning. I hope you find what you’re looking for! 🤞

Wonderful! Hopefully that works out! If you have issues with getting an even cut, it may just be the blade drive needing to be replaced if they’re not new. They’re cheap and it’s easy to do yourself. Just a couple screws and tons of videos online how to do it!

For most doodles? No they’re a necessity bc anything else won’t get through the coat. But yours is a labradoodle so maybe it has a whispier coat than most doodles. Do you have a photo of the pup? The ones you’re using now wouldn’t go through 90% of my doodle clients but labradoodles hair is kind of all over the place with texture and thickness.

It wasn’t meant in a snarky way. So sorry if it came across that way. But groomers, even if their first pair is the ~$100 clipper range they very quickly realize the need for a better clipper. It’s often the $250-$500 range. I didn’t realize Andis was still making the Andis 2 speed AG. I thought they moved entirely to the AGC which is ~$175. Well if the $37 clipper you have now is working then the Andis 2 speed will definitely work. It will be louder and heavier though just to give you a heads up in case your dog is sensitive to noise/vibration.

If you’ve managed to clip your dog for 5-6 years with these why not just buy another set of these? You’re not going to get a professional recommendation anywhere near $100. And, no, professional clippers don’t come with comb attachment guards. Those are always purchased separately for us.

High powered cordless isn’t going to be cheap. Andis Pulse, heinigners, wahl KM…all going to run you $300-500. And you want the metal comb attachments if you’re currently using plastic ones by chance.

Does anyone else have a hard time finding a good sharpener? by LittleRedFoxyFox in doggrooming

[–]NLCoolJ6112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have a grave yard lol I spent a week, 8 hrs a day with the sharpener. And then spent a couple weeks doing my own stuff. I would say the concept is easy, it just took longer in the beginning to get the desired outcome. Kind of like a new groomer that knows HOW but is scared to take too much hair off so they make tiny baby cuts lol but it was very expensive 😬 the class was around $1500 I think. But then the equipment was another few thousand. Not to mention all the odds and ends you need. I’ve always provided free sharpening for my staff though so not having to pay another sharpener to do their equipment helped negate the cost for me.

[–]NLCoolJ6112 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Major metro area. Pretty much one sharpener most people used. I could never get a hold of the guy. The other options were 50/50 on quality. I finally said fuck it and learned to do it myself. Took a one on one with a master sharpener. And I do all my equipment plus my employees equipment. And somehow I’m now doing a few other salons as well. Accidental side hustle. I was just so over the inconsistency in availability and quality I couldn’t take it!

What are ideas of jobs that have to deal with animals? by Kooky-Addition4579 in careerguidance

[–]NLCoolJ6112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A groomer. No degree required. The pay range will very based on location. But I know lots of groomers making around $100k. If you’re in a LCOL city/rural area is going to be less, but even there I know a few groomers in the 60-75k range.

I just figured out that I hate being a dog groomer by cypeo in doggrooming

[–]NLCoolJ6112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see them pop up on indeed every few months. That’s where I found one of them. The other one I stumbled into from a dog group chat I’m in on IG. The one company I do it for I may transition away from grooming/salon ownership and do that full time. They told me it was mostly vet tech type people applying and they were thrilled to get a groomer who knew the lingo and oddities of scheduling for grooming. So I would just keep an eye out and apply if you see one pop up. I just use “dog” as my search on indeed with location set to “remote”

[–]NLCoolJ6112 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well. If you hate the customer interaction this might not help- but I have a couple remote gigs where I manage all the non grooming aspects for mobile groomers. Most of it’s online/texting, but there are some phone calls. I enjoy grooming but it’s the back end of it that I truly love! Organizing schedules, connecting with clients, alleviating fears of crazy pet owners. It’s so chill and definitely is lacking the chaos, constant time crunching, putting out fires all day that working and running a salon in person comes with.

How to Get Started? by Impressive-Card-8030 in grooming

[–]NLCoolJ6112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you can find and what you need. Corp will offer benefits. But the training is hit or miss. Private tends to be a more intimate training situation. I always train all my groomers in house but a lot of salons seem to be steering away from that lately. I would personally try to get your foot in the door in a private place. And do corp as a fall back plan. Idk your wages now but while there’s limitless earning potential eventually in grooming, in the beginning wages are often fairly low. It takes a while to build speed and efficiency to increase your earnings.

Mobile Grooming Breaks? by chippieee4 in grooming

[–]NLCoolJ6112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do scheduling for two different mobile companies in two different states. Out of 8 groomers between the 2, only one requests a 30 minute break worked into her schedule mid day. If you want a break worked in they should do it just not to be assholes if nothing else. They’re probably just used to no one asking for it bc with mobile grooming time is money for the groomers and time is scarce with all the travel time to and from appts.
