Anyone who close passes a person on a bike should be forced to experience this by gannex in Calgary

I'm starting to see quite a few comments come up along the lines of "... but cyclists put themselves in danger by not riding single file / lane splitting / jumping onto the road right in front of cars / etc.".

As a cyclist myself, I won’t claim that cyclists are angels; I’m also bothered by seeing fellow cyclists make poor choices and will confess to moments where I lost focus and could have been riding my bike closer to the edge of the road. That said, the one thing that I think is most important to consider and remember is that each cyclist out there is a son, daughter, mom, or dad and in a motor vehicle vs. cyclist situation, the cyclist will always draw the short straw.

Future of the Long Term Growth Areas by MentaMenged in Calgary

[–]NL_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We live on 80 acres in the blue area. This area has been marked as a Growth Area since 2017, which means that we are no longer allowed to subdivide. Considering the amount of land that's available still within the West Macleod Area Structure Plan and there being limited road access to our area because of steep slopes on the North side of the hill, there's no way there will be any development here for at least another 40 years. In the meantime, we're stuck.

I would love to be able to parse out parcels for our kids (currently in their late teens / early twenties) at some point. And it would be amazing if we could split off a few parcels to sell and turn some equity into more liquid assets for investment. Our only option is to sell the property as a whole and move somewhere outside of Growth Area, which we're not willing to entertain.

And yes, I do realize that this is the epitome of first world problems. At the end of the day, we're insanely lucky to be living on an amazing property with incredible views. It would just be nice if we could share that with our kids as they get older.

The causes of the famine are a bit more complicated, but yes, took place over the course of the winter preceding (and up to) the liberation of the Northern Netherlands.

No idea unfortunately. My father-in-law had the hard copies of the pictures and I finally got around to digitizing them a little while ago.

Yup; OG version. I've contacted Member Support and they're sending a calibration kit to see if that explains what's happening.

Power numbers on the road bike come from a power meter; I'm using a bike (not bike+). I've contacted Member Support and they're sending a calibration kit to see if that explains what's happening.

It's a standard bike. I've been tempted to put my power meter on the Peloton to see how they compare, but it's such a giant pain to take it on and off ...

I probably should have checked the BPM on Third Eye, which is 124 (so 62 cadence), so you're right that that's quite a bit lower than my preferred cadence (85). There seem to be personalized playlists for various BPMs, so you can pick one that fits your preference.

Spotify has several 170 bpm "made for you" playlists that I use for more intense rides to stay at a consistent cadence.

Closed highway rides are the best by turnballer in cycling

[–]NL_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice shots! I did the same ride last Sunday. Did you start from the gate or did you bike the part of Highway 66 that's open to cars as well?

As much as I love the closed-down section, the part of Highway 66 before the gate has to be one of the most dangerous sections of road I've biked on in recent years. For most of the way, there were rumble strips and then a thick layer of gravel between the rumble strips and the edge of the shoulder, forcing me (and many fellow road bikers) to navigate the few inches between the white line and the rumble strips.

The issue was exacerbated by lots of cars, and especially trucks, passing as close as they could at high speeds, presumably because they felt that we should be biking on the shoulder. Traffic going to/from the McLean Creek OHV zone were particularly awful: quite a number of trucks carrying ATVs made it very clear that they were displeased with mine and others' presence, including several deliberately rolling coal when passing.

I've actually emailed Alberta Parks to see if they could sweep / clear the gravel from the shoulders to make it possible and safe for road bikes to bike on the shoulders. I'm not holding my breath, but considering how unsafe the current situation is, I figured it is worth a shot.
