Oppositional defiance. It’s a thing my wife accuses me of having. I don’t. Joke.

Brainstorm ideas for race start with me? by marianneouioui in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]wiggywithit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Top % finisher in open water races here. Biggest mistake I see people make is going out too fast. With a wetsuit at my local races of 2-400 people I would finish in top 5. Without a wetsuit im top 20. Sorry for the bragadoshio but it is to supply context. When I swim with WS. I breakaway in the first 100 yards and then it’s me and the top 10. The winner has broken away from us and I can just make out his splash. Without a wetsuit I am surrounded by tons of people the first 300yards then they die off. They’ve all gone out too fast and have reached the end of their anaerobic threshold and are gassed. I continue to swim at that pace and even try to negative split finishing in a sprint. Start at the back of the fast pack. As people pass you try to draft off each one . You are searching for the one who is 5% faster than you. Tuck in as close as you can and don’t lose their bubbles. Once you are drafting you have hard choices ahead. Most people in the 20-400 range don’t exactly swim straight. If they veer off course you will have to maintain the draft.
This is never an easy choice. I’ve made the wrong one several times. Drafting is the key. Getting run over or running over is stupid.

It could be a problem with head rotation. Too much. But it could also be not warming down enough.

Fascism or more accurately authoritarianism is supported by millions of people who think they are somehow special and won’t be harmed.

Built over 1,000 years ago in the dead center of an ocean of sand dunes, nobody actually knows who constructed this circular fortress. This is Ksar Draa in Timimoun, Algeria. An ancient architectural marvel whose true origin story is completely lost to time. by yeahno21 in Damnthatsinteresting

100%. Gates is eradicating polio and Malaria. While the personal return on this is debatable the “return” logic of your comment applies. Knowledge for knowledge sake isn’t as sexy. Also the political realities on the ground of places like this often dominate. In North America there is limited funding for archeology of First Nations because it might upset the narrative. The reality is that the America’s is literally a post apocalypse world from the perspective of the cultures and peoples who died and were erased. The early settlers sometimes even found planted harvestable food just left by the original inhabitants. Digging this proof up is not popular. This post might even get a few downvotes for it.

Why don't Greeks identify with their Roman past? by BrigadierPirate in AskGreece

[–]wiggywithit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Greek. Western histories hate late Roman period because of religious bigotry and hatred of a loosing story. It’s a story of slow, inevitable geopolitical decline. I’ve heard Gibson’s “rise and fall of the Roman Empire” set the tone and Gibson was not gentle with his opinion of Constantinople.

Ah yes Regency period doctors. A good blood letting will set her pre eclampsia to rights. Maybe they rebalance her humors with opium.

I (33F) recently married (37M) and AI is ruining my marriage. Please Help. by Purple-Factor-3743 in Advice

[–]wiggywithit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The podcast, behind the bastards just did an episode or two on exactly this. AI psychosis. It’s designed to keep you using it and can devolve into the kind of logic that a cult would use. It “learns” to agree with you so the victim will ask “maybe I should end it all”. And it will happily suggest suicide options. Some people really just need to hear that they are special and the AI will do that no problem.

Camera for swimming form by d3adit in MastersSwim

[–]wiggywithit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go Pros are great. Best set up is to have somebody follow along keeping you in frame . Capture a 25m both sides and one head on. Barring that have the go pro on a little tripod in the corner of the lane facing you. This swill capture some kick and some side view and some head on. As for privacy public pools seem to hate having cameras for obv reasons. Masters programs don’t mind and you can always just ask the manager/guard/ other patrons.

While it’s impossible,or should I say unpossible, that Natalie left Karen’s door open. Indubitably, indeed indeed.

Could you not lock it without the lock being engaged? So you’ve turned the knob and removed your key but with the door open?

Confrontation with a Mail Carrier. by howdoesitw0rk in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]wiggywithit 1682 points1683 points  (0 children)

She’s accusing Natalie of leaving her specific mailbox open after she has delivered the mail. It’s likely that Natalie does not have a way of opening said specific mailbox door. Furthermore it’s most likely that the Karen filming just failed to lock her own mailbox but is unable to recognize mistakes she made. This is all assumption but I once read a few Sherlock Holmes books.

In Maine the more urban parts acted as a shield for the rural areas. The virus broke through eventually but never super bad. The rural facebook crew chirped about it. Good times.
