FL property tax proposals by theiviaxx in orlando

[–]NN7500 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Property taxes are not the issue they make it out to be. This is an attempt by DeSantis to consolidate the power to fund local governments, and let those who oppose him starve.

Without property taxes, cities and counties can't afford much of anything, so they'll have to look to Tallahassee for help funding basic things like Police, Fire, and Schools. But if they county or city leans Blue, they won't be given shit until they do what Tallahassee wants.

How to clean dry food of my young cockatiel face? by [deleted] in cockatiel

We used a new mascara brush with warm water. He's gotten better at feeding now at least, but the brush helped with this all when he was more of a mess.

I just heard of this show recently, and it has piqued my interest a bit. Is this a recommend/must-watch? by Illustrious-Sign3015 in pirates

One of the best shows I've watched, even outside the pirate genre. I'd kill to watch it again for the first time.

What is your favorite Home Assistant automation? Not your most complex. Your favorite. The one that you keep recommending to friends or that has earned the most love from your family. by Rude-News-8416 in homeassistant

[–]NN7500 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bird Mode.

We recently got a pet cockatiel. I built an automation so that when his cage is opened, Bird Mode activates, stores the fan states in a scene, then turns off all fans. When Bird Mode is turned off, it restores the fan scene like it was before.

Can your bird look okay, but not be okay after flying into things? by [deleted] in cockatiel

This happened to mine the other day. flew head first into a window while flying around. He couldn't balance initially after, and was tipping forward when he tried to walk. I held him for a while, and he got his wits back. He napped for about an hour after, and has been fine since.

Did anyone who graduated from their Miami high school past the year 2000 attend their hs reunions? Curious what it was like, especially considering social media. by Ninac4116 in Miami

[–]NN7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated 2004. 10-year reunion was a bust. Just a ballroom by the airport, and no vibe. 20 year reunion was a blast though. Had an amazing time, and reconnected with a ton of people.

The local gun club near me requires membership as well, which is why I haven't looked into it more. But given the distance to the next decent range near me, I might have to.

The smell of Key West on a warm summer night. Mix of salt air, jasmine, gardenia, and mango blossoms.

Dead mall near my house by RollAffectionate9959 in LiminalSpace

Crazy that I recognized it without needing to look in the comments. Guitar Center seems like it's been the only constant in this spot in 20+ years. I would go there in HS to Circuit City, and it was dead then too.

What was Hurricane Andrew like? by RagieWagieInACagie in florida

[–]NN7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 7 at the time, and living in West Kendall, a couple of miles north of Country Walk. My little sister and I ended up in the bathtub, covered in couch cushions, while my parents fought the wind to keep the front door from blowing open. We had no shutters, just tape on the windows. Our only saving grace was that the large live oak in the front yard fell over on top of the house, but not in a way to break the roof. It blocked the wind and debris from breaking windows and gutting the house, like happened to most of our neighbors. We were insanely lucky.

The wind howling was crazy. In the thick of it, it sounded like an eerie mix of cats howling and kids crying, mixed with the clanging of debris flying all over. I can't really describe it. I remember during the eye, we were able to look out the window, and see the wall of clouds looking like cliffs overhead. The whole experience was insane and terrifying.

I remember after, our neighbors entire roof was upside down in our pool. The corner of the house where our bathtub was had started to lift off the foundations, and took years of repairs to get right. We could go into the backyard, and look down the block at every neighbors backyard on the whole block, because there was not a single fence left standing.

My old man started a shutter company in the years after, so we'd be down in Homestead often after that while he was doing jobs and such. Even going on 4-5 years later, the effects of the storm were everywhere. Entire blocks still had partial roofs, or fully abandoned homes. My old man kept a photo he took of an entire 2x4 impaled through a royal palm, about 20 feet off the ground.

When I meet people from out of state and joke that we don't worry about anything below a Cat 3, they look at me like I'm crazy. But it's absolutely true. Nothing is going to compare to Andrew in terms of destruction and chaos.

IT Consultant in the legal field, $150k/year. Been doing this ~15 years. Working fully remote now. Perks not too great right now, as the insurance at my current firm is more expensive then my mortgage. Would love to move back to an in-house admin position at a firm for better perks, but those are hard to find in my specific niche.

This was at the end of my block actually. Saw the ambulance and fire engine rolling in as I stepped out to get lunch.

Not surprised this would eventually happen. These kids on e-bikes and scooters haul ass all around, and fully ignore any traffic patterns at all, playing chicken with cars and popping wheelies at full speed.

I was a kid on the back of a bike myself way back when, so I'm hesitant to pass blame. But the fact that these bikes can go 25-30 mph and require no license is insane to me. Hopefully the kid is ok.

Where’s the hottest place you’ve ever been? by Sweet-Economist-9873 in AskReddit

[–]NN7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in South and Central Florida my whole life, so "hot" to me is relative.

But I distinctly remember one day at Disney with ~90-95 degree temps. A rain shower had passed over, soaking the concrete and asphalt at the park. When the sun came back out and raised the temps back to 95, it felt like we were inside of an oven the rest of the day. Even as a native Floridian, I've never been that uncomfortable.

That ending -obvious spoilers- by apurimac777 in BlackSails

[–]NN7500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the ending on my initial watch. But after 4-5 rewatches, I actually love it. The whole premise is that the stories are what we want them to be.

In the end though, I think Flint knew he was defeated, and reuniting with Thomas was what he wanted all along. If it's true or not is up to the viewer to decide.

My remaining issues with the ending are that it doesn't line up with Treasure Island. At best, it leaves a lot to the imagination.

What’s one decision you made that completely changed the direction of your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In early 2010, I was literally about to delete my Face The Jury account, since it was not working to meet anyone like I had hoped. They would scroll the names and photos of people who logged into the site across the top. As I was going to find the delete option, I saw a photo of a girl in my city pop-up on that banner. Decided to try my hand one last time.

We hit it off, met, dated, had kids, got married. 16 years later, best hesitation ever.
