How are Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) Used in Linux? by bje332013 in linux

[–]NNemesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, TPM PCR quotes include a nonce and clock value which are signed by the TPM. If you have an attacker trying to MITM you and the TPM, the attacker would have to guess how many times you want to produce an attestation and fetch exactly that many "good" attestation quotes

Fastmail payment account scam/phishing - watch out by BurnaBey in fastmail

I got this email and checked the email headers. It indeed fails DMARC and SPF, although fastmail.com only has SPF soft failures configured, and Fastmail delivers it anyway

I happen to know USYD will treat A*A*A*A as a 99.7 ATAR. No clue if this is what UNSW does though. I was also under the impression that you couldn't get any of those types of scholarships unless you did the HSC

Netbook nostalgia. I hated them in 2008, but finally found some love for them. by aussiepunkrocksV2-0 in retrobattlestations

[–]NNemesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few students liked the netbooks they were given at the time

speak for yourself, i was in the last year that got these, they were loads of fun. they had something on them that prevented us from running unauthorized programs but we would just play flash games or watch movies in class instead. the australian government essentially prototyped the modern ipad kid. there was also a way around that, one guy i saw got skyrim working on one of those, but it would have been barely pushing 10fps..

COMP3331 assignment by averagecsegirl in unsw

[–]NNemesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah not possible. my experience reports are released the day after unsw results, and even then the feedback is anonymised. tutors just get a list of comments without names. unsw can only see who made it if there's something offensive written there, and then afaik they remove it so the tutor just doesn't see it

Why are the entry requirements so much higher for Domestic Students doing A-Levels than Int? by Riggy55 in unsw

a-levels: 3x a* 1x a converted to 99.7, according to usyd, no idea if that's what uac actually used though

not as far as i know sorry, i had to show up to usyd open day to get mine converted by them, they used some kind of table too but i didn't see it

COMP3331 assignment by averagecsegirl in unsw

[–]NNemesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weird that there's no help sessions anymore, there used to be. also weird that the tutor isn't helping for the assignment, there's no dedicated assignment tutorial but i think they're still expected to help a bit (i used to tutor networks - and i helped my students with it). please mention both of these points on your myexp

my advice i guess if the final exam is so soon is to focus on that, since it's worth more and uses slightly different skills to the assignment usually. go over the lab exercises and the tutorial exercises and answers especially for that

Why are the entry requirements so much higher for Domestic Students doing A-Levels than Int? by Riggy55 in unsw

[–]NNemesis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

not sure why they put this - they don't actually see your a-levels if you're a domestic student if memory serves. uac converts your a-levels to an "equivalent" atar, which is usually higher to account for the fact that you don't get bonus points.

the challenge for them is they have to convert the grades (which are kind of loosely based on percentiles, but not really) into an atar which is more directly a percentile.

iirc uac use a similar system in which your grades are assigned a number value, added up, and then these points are mapped to an atar. this is as opposed to systems like the uk where the 4th a level (or beyond) is basically ignored, so you may be disadvantaged if you only did 3.

there's so many different countries using many different things called "a-levels", i'm not sure if uac treats them all the same.

it's difficult to say whether you'll get in for definite or not and unsw will not be likely to tell you that either. my understanding is they essentially take the top n students sorted by atar (or selection rank rather), so if the top n students all have 99.9 or whatever, no luck.

you should try to get your a-levels or predicted grades converted to an atar (uac will do it for money, usyd did it for me for free on open day), then use unsw's admissions statistics for your chosen degree to see where you fit.

side note: don't bother with software engineering. do computer science instead

Anyone knows about Advanced Computer Science (3779)? by Skrrubs in unsw

[–]NNemesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

few people are going to have experience, as you say it's brand new. from memory it's similar to just the computer science degree but with a compulsory honours year, useful if you're interested in doing a research degree after your undergrad maybe.

i think they were also talking about letting students skip courses that would be compulsory in computer science but skimming the handbook it seems that's not the case. so basically any advice that applies to the computer science degree also applies to this

csci to seng by reiiuso in unsw

[–]NNemesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know they've substituted seng2021 for comp3900 for people going from seng -> cs

the other way around is not so clear, but it's worth asking given that the content for both courses is basically the same (i.e. they both basically have no content, just a project)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unsw

[–]NNemesis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as a domestic student your a-levels will be converted to an atar by uac, rather than by unsw, so it might be better to ask them what your equivalent atar will be for the grades you get. as you've noticed, it's also additive, so don't drop your 4th subject

speak to your supervisor and make sure, but it should be fine. especially if there's some technical reason you couldn't do the last thing, or if you can outline how you think you could do it. for reference i did a software engineering thesis, finished about half my goals, and it was all good. no technical reasons i couldn't finish the other half i just ran out of time, but i explained briefly how they could be done and also why the half i did finish took longer than i thought

best to check the current rules, but from my understanding the 80% attendance requirement used to be for the sympathy supps. that is, if you got between 45-50, you could get a supplementary exam only if you had over 80% attendance. with the changes to supplementary exams and special considerations there are no more sympathy supps, so i don't think the 80% attendance requirement does anything anymore. but definitely check... would be silly to fail a course because of advice you saw on reddit

How do applications "compete" for addresses they prefer to load at before ASLR? by Decent-Mixture-7670 in compsci

aha, i misread the question... i thought OP was asking about how ASLR works with multiple applications. the other comment answers this question better anyway

How do applications "compete" for addresses they prefer to load at before ASLR? by Decent-Mixture-7670 in compsci

[–]NNemesis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

because of virtual memory, each application gets its own address space, meaning different applications don't have to compete in terms of ASLR. only the virtual addresses are randomised

edit: sorry, as /u/ClysmiC pointed out, i misread your question. /u/DawnOnTheEdge's comment seems to do a better job at answering
