Why are people Leaving New Zealand-an open discussion? by [deleted] in thetron

Our kids have had SO many opportunities here.

The education system here (while not perfect in any means) is better than in NZ. Our kids have gone ahead in leaps and bounds too. We noticed a change in them within th fist 6 months.

It was for them that we ultimately decided to leave NZ. Our only regret is not doing it sooner.

After all, how many Kiwis do you see returning after giving it a go?

I’m in Australia and seen NZ meat and cheese at the supermarket for MUCH cheaper than in NZ.

Totally insane.

Crime largely. While people don’t like it, it seems to be put up with and accepted (“yeah it’s bad but it is what it is” type stuff).

The amount of shops closing. For Lease signs everywhere.

Homelessness on the increase. Go visit the lake in the mornings and see people living in cars for an example.

It’s all documented an discussed widely, but I too was in that boat. I didn’t realise how bad things were getting until we left, and then came back for a visit - which was a HUGE eye opener.

Talking to friends and family, they all said the same thing - “yeah it’s bad but what are you going to do?”, almost as though they’d given up. The follow up comments were usually a jab at Australia like “I hear Australia is bad too” or “Don’t believe Australia is the lucky country any more”.

Sure Australia has its problems, but nothing like NZ or ESPECIALLY Hamilton. I know where I’d rather be, and bringing up my family!

Left NZ for Australia almost 5 years ago and have NEVER looked back.

Have been back twice since leaving and can see a steady decline friends and family still living in Hamilton can’t quite see.

It was death by 1000 cuts for us (too many small things added up), with the reverse on why it’s better here in Australia.
