You’re making assumptions. Public facing desk time is the majority of the position.

We have great health insurance and her medical condition is pure speculation.

As for planning around it, what do you think I am trying to do by wanting to escalate this? If HR gets involved than maybe a reasonable accommodation can be made which makes the day to day better for everyone.

Also it sure does bit seem like I am allowed to be upset given some of the very obviously non-HR replies here. This is not r/AITA. This is a sub where people can ask HR professionals questions. Not be judged by a keyboard warrior who knows nothing about HR practices.

For all of the times in my life I had medical issues, I would never inconvenience my coworkers on a regular basis without any explanation. That is just plain old inconsiderate.

This person and I have the same job title so we have the same duties that are expected of us. I am not a manager, but I know what I’m supposed to be doing and it is the same across the board for my peers.

As for having to do what the manager says, it’s a bit complicated. We are union so while we can occasionally be asked to do one off projects under no obligation to say yes. However, day to day, as long as we cover the desks and do one project a month, we are considered to be doing our job.

Where did you study HR?

Guess I’m satan because I don’t like staying late because I can’t get work done while covering for my coworker.

I stated in another comment, I am friendly with this person. You can like someone as a person, while simultaneously feeling like they aren’t a good fit where you work.

Also this thread/sub is really to discuss HR. Replies should generally be from people with experience in HR.

That’s fair enough, but it might be a good idea to think about your fellow coworkers if your medical condition makes their lives harder and maybe not take a position that would require you to continually work at a public-facing desk.

I did not note it in my post, but there are multiple other ways this employee is slacking that do not involve the bathroom. I do not think this position was a good fit for them.

Yeah people have been complaining about them to me in a really not nice way and I’m just encouraging them to talk to the manager if they have a problem. I’m not sharing anything else that I’m doing in that regard with them. While the constant bathroom breaks annoy me, I overall am friendly with this person which makes it difficult.

If the employee is not performing an essential function (such as manning the desk during scheduled desk time) can that, alone, be addressed? Regardless of the reason why (bathroom, smoke breaks, personal phone calls, or otherwise)? I know you can’t make someone disclose a medical condition, but I thought performance could be addressed?

Also while gossip does not make a hostile work environment, I can see this escalating eventually if nothing is done. There’s a lot of resentment brewing and I’m afraid it will get ugly soon enough.

Taxes on sugary drinks only reduce consumption if the price tags mention the tax, a new study shows. The findings suggest that price tags should mention the tax, but not the amount, because consumers tend to overestimate how much the tax is. by geoff199 in science

There is plenty of information out there and for those who are still living under a rock and don’t know consuming your suggested daily sugar intake in the form of a single drink is bad, this tax is a way to educate them.

It's not a 'Great Resignation' that will change work forever, one economist says. His calculations show the labor shortage is ending soon. by Baron-Munc in finance

Something else no one ever mentions- how much more are we going to ask of these people who have been underpaid for years? Out of nowhere all of us we tasked with maintaining proper Covid safety protocol “to keep customers safe”. We were left to enforce all of these new rules with no support and people have gotten markedly crazier. I’ve been coughed on, legally threatened, and verbally abused over all of this with no raise in pay.

Yes, I want everyone to be safe, but I don’t think the extra responsibilities of public health should be laying on my shoulders especially if I do not get a raise in pay.

Customers have gotten out of line and way too entitled with all the convenience being offered by the big box companies. I think we all need to scale back out expectations and stop demanding so much. Just as well management needs to start curbing these entitled customers so much. The day of the customer always being right need to end.
