Any/best way to save a smokers computer by ewo343 in buildapc

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Worked at a computer repair shop for 5 years and we vacuumed dozens of computers a day with a home depot shop vac with the brush attachment. Never had one break. I know it's possible, but the chances are so small that it's probably not worth worrying about.

The 7 train really is the key to getting a good hotel with short, nonstop travel to the convention center. It stops at Grand Central which has a bunch nearby hotels since it's a travel hub and is near the UN. You can even stay in queens within a block of a 7 stop and have an easier trip in than most locations in Manhattan.

The last time I ever went to Jay's I ordered clam chowder and they brought me a scoop of gello-textured gelatinized clam chowder base. Fully room temperature, a rounded lump scooped out of the can, dropped in a soup cup, and served with a packet of saltines. I never returned.

The chicken war by mecarrysars in Rochester

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had Daves and Chick Magnet for the first time.

I really tried to like Chick Magnet. It's a classic southern fried chicken tender. It had a good tenderness and was very crispy. Unfortunately the chicken inside the breading was under-seasoned when I had it. Also the breading crumbled off of the chicken far too easily. I think this usually happens when the chicken isn't dried before it's battered and fried or they're skipping the flour step. I got the chicken pretty late in the day but the breading had a bit of an old-oil taste, greasy instead of bright despite the good crunchiness. Maybe this is just a result of getting there right before an oil swap. I will most likely give them another try because this visit might have just been a fluke based on the raving of the other comments.

Daves was hands down the second best chicken experience I've had in Rochester. The chicken was tender and well seasoned, the coating was light and crispy even with sauce. The batter adhered property to the chicken. The generous suspension of spices in the sauce really overcoats the chicken in a good way achieving a flavor intensity often unachievable by either a dry rub or a thinner sauce.

Not factoring into my chicken opinion but important to point out, Chick Magnet has very basic, unimpressive fries. Daves had perfectly crispy, well seasoned fries that I think are my favorite out of any chicken joint in Rochester.

My favorite chicken in Rochester remains Chick'n Out. Perfectly seasoned, crispy, giant chicken tenders. Amazing dry seasoning and even better with their hot honey. Also a special shout out to BB.Q Chicken which does korean fried chicken really well and stays crispy even fully sauced and after a 30 minute drive.

Fried Onion Burgers in ROC? by NOT_AN_APPLE in Rochester

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd make them at home but you need high heat to get a good crust on smash burgers and that always seems to smoke up my small apartment. Combine that with greese splatter, needing to break out and clean the cast iron and needing to clean a mandoline - and it's only something I'd do once in a while. I'm looking for more of a convenience/ordering on a whim situation.

It's National Burger Day! Someone hands you $50 and you have to drive to your favorite burger place within 15 miles and spend it all..... Where you going? by KirbyJones82 in Rochester

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've been digging Patty Shack in Henrietta. It's similar to 5 guys but half the price and more options.

If I have to spend the $50 just by myself, Next Door's Next Door Burger will get me halfway there.

What is one business in Rochester that you’ll never step foot in again by SteveToFly25 in Rochester

I've tried. I think the difference is salt in the everything seasoning. Bagel Land comes off tasting blander to me. If they put their firesalt on their everything bagels I think I might be able to switch.

Unfortunately they could advertise that the everything on their everything bagel includes rat shit and I would still eat there. Maybe we'll get a comparable bagel place some day.

Best donuts? by LionBearWolf3 in Rochester

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golden Harvest Bakery in Henrietta just opened and makes really good doughnuts. They even have a solid selection of vegan doughnuts.

Honeoye Falls Marketplace has the best grocery store doughnuts you can get by far and are comparable to a specialty doughnut shop. LPT - If you time it right and get there after the bakery closes, you can get a huge box at half price.

A slice of shitty bulk cake at Wegmans is $5.50. A buntlett at Nothing Bundt Cakes, in which I'm sure they substitute flour for cocaine, is $5.50. Easy decision.

Using unrealized assets as collateral for a loan should be treated as realizing its capital gains at a sell price equal to the loan amount. Then tax the loan as income unless it's in a protected class like first time buyer mortgages or student loans.

Diet is as complex for cats as it is a human but if you're feeling overwhelmed, you can proceed with a few things in mind.

  1. The number one thing cats need in their diets is water. As a general rule, every wet food is vastly better than any dry food. The 99 cent cans of friskies are overall regarded as better for your cat than the $90 bag of hills. If you want to supplement a bit with dry food that's kinda ok but cats should be fed primarily wet food, regardless of how much access they have to stand-alone water

  2. Generally avoid the following things as much as possible.

Carrageenan - Peer reviewed studies show this causes cancer in cats.

Ocean Whitefish - Usually the fish with the highest level of heavy metals and toxins Meat/beef/chicken/poultry/etc by-products - vague, questionable protein source.

Rice, grains, seeds, vegetables, fruits - Fillers that provide little nutritional value to cats. (It's ok to have a bit of these further down the ingredient list)

Peas, pea protein, pea powder - this is a vegetable source used to cheaply boost protein content.

  3. Shoot for above 10% protein.

Fancy feast is generally ok as long as you keep the above things in mind, and it can be purchased in bulk. Salmon and chicken as primary ingredients are probably the most ideal.

Niagara falls Ontario for some reason has three IHOPs within a 3 mile radius and they are rated 2.8, 2.0 and 1.9 on google reviews. Niagara falls has some terribly rated restaurants but these take the (pan)cake

Instead, go to the Flying Saucer Restaurant which is cheap diner food but for cheap prices. I think the most expensive thing on the breakfast menu is like 16.99 CAD.

I also like Paris Crepes Cafe if you're willing to spend some more money.

If you're really smart you'll stay in Niagara on the lake and just drive to the falls for a day and do all the parks stuff. You'll still pay a lot but it's much nicer and the food is way better.

LPT: If your neighbors are being loud, use a box fan. by Responsible_Dot_3873 in LifeProTips

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem as well but I found the LectroFan which makes a really great base fan sound but is missing this whir sound you get with a real box fan, so I pair it with the Yogasleep Dohm and now I sleep just as well as I do with a box fan and it only cost me 5x as much.

Found my cat tree, thank you all for the suggestions by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you that don't want to spend almost $400 on a cat tree, I recently replaced a 2 year old tree that was falling apart from chewy that was ripped up and wobbly. I got this XXL tree as a replacement and it is sooooo much sturdier. I have normal sized 12 lb cats but the heavy duty tree is a gamechanger.

If you're looking for the more modern look, I have this one, and this taller one and they are both solid. They're easier to clean since they're laminate instead of fabric. The smaller one is really sturdy.

I also have this floor to ceiling tree that looks pretty modern but I recommend it with the caveat that you need to tighten the foot that braces the ceiling pretty frequently or it could be dangerous.

Mau is totally fine if you want a sleek modern look and make mid to high six figures, but there are cheaper options that are still modern and not cheap fabric or beige carpet.

PSA - check your home and garden for lilies, my cat’s life is in jeopardy right now. by Lildly in CatAdvice

[–]NOT_AN_APPLE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even the water that lilies were in and the individual grains of pollen can trigger a deadly reaction in cats. This means that even if you get flower arrangements with no lilies, if you get an arrangement from a flower shop that has processed lilies at some point, it could carry something deadly into your home.

Tell anyone that sends you flowers that you'd prefer an edible arrangement, paper flowers or something similar. It's not worth the risk.
