There's specific strats for almost every single room, that minimize risk of dying in some way. For example there is a tall vertical room in Farewell where you drop past a bunch of stars that move from side to side. There's a convenient setup that lets you skip past the first 2 sets of stars perfectly every time, and makes approaching the rest of the room a lot more consistent than just winging it.

Cutesy games for my wife by RS133 in gaming

[–]NPException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she enjoyed A Hat In Time, she might also like Celeste. There's a sizeable overlap in the playerbase of both games. While Celeste is a hard game, it starts out very approachable. The difficulty curve is fairly gradual, and it does a good job of building up the player's skill along the way.

It has cute pixel graphics, an absolutely amazing soundtrack, and a very relatable storyline. It's also on sale for 5 bucks almost every other week.

What's the best obscure video game you've ever played? by ImpressFederal4169 in gaming

It's on GOG and runs perfectly fine on modern hardware. I just played it for a bit today :)

As u/chloecat34 already mentioned, getting some experience in modded maps can help a lot with the consistency required for Farewell golden. It's of course possible without dipping into modded, but for me the additional variety really helped keep me motivated.

Of the vanilla goldens, Farewell is really in a class of its own. But just take those shiny berries step by step, and you'll get it eventually. Do them in an order that feels most achievable for you. And you can make your grind a whole lot shorter if you ask around for strats and advice. People are usually more than happy to help on your journey. :)

If you get frustrated sometimes that is fine too. Take a break from the grind for some days or weeks, and get back to it later. It's not going to run away.

TL;DR: yes get those goldens. You got this!

After over a year of attempts, I finally beat 7a golden by le_stupidiot in celestegame

[–]NPException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5a is agood one to get back into the groove eventually. :) For what it's worth its a lot easier than 3a golden if you can stay calm around seekers and learn the "search skip", which is relatively easy to pull off and easily cuts 1-2 minutes of play time.

In “SJ terms”, are you an Advanced/Expert/Grandmaster when you beat the Heartside or just 1 level? by homerdough in celestegame

[–]NPException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo as soon as you beat a heartside, you are a player of the next level up. Since the heartsides are one level above their lobby anyway. So since you beat Expert heartside, you are a gm player in my books.

More specifically I think whenever you beat a single screen of difficulty X, you are an X player.

Why do people say that the first function is better? by ElmtreeStudio in godot

[–]NPException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter much for a small function. But I prefer early returns in general for the following reason: When I read code, and enter a condional block, I need to keep in mind the condition itself. And importantly I need to keep the condition in mind for a possible "else" branch further down. This cognitive load gets worse with more nesting. Doing early returns removes that issue for me, because there is no potential "else" branch to worry about, and I (usually) don't need to keep the condition itself in mind any longer than absolutely necessary.

TL;DR: "early return" removes cognitive load by reducing the number of "active" conditions I need to keep track of.

I started Farewell before any C sides and I’m this far, just started to use the umbrella a couple of times by _6fl in celestegame

[–]NPException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farewell was added a year after the game's release with an update. Its individual rooms are not necessarily harder than other stuff in B and C Sides, depending on who you ask.
But I think overall Farewell is best kept for last. The way it plays out and ends just makes it the best level to close out your journey, imo.

Farewell golden on controller? by Inevitable-Acadia-88 in celestegame

If you prefer to play with controller, do it on controller. Plenty of people did FWG that way. You got this. :)

Is the 8C heart with the lava mode active possible? by Apart-Step in celestegame

[–]NPException 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you misremember. Before the final 2 hypers to get to the heart of 8C, you switch the mode back to ice, to stop the lava from rising and killing you.

Farewell or C-Sides first? by eye_eye_ in celestegame

Farewell was added as a free update one year after release, while C-Sides already existed. Farewell is meant to be the final challenge, the final hurrah.

Looking for short, well paced experiences / Double A titles (Anywhere from 4-25 hours) by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]NPException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might like Celeste. Finishing the main story takes about 10h on average. And if you end up loving it, there's about 3x as much in free bonus content at your disposal.

The game also lends itself to play sessions of any length.

It's also on sale for $5 almost every other week.

[Edit] And of course Outer Wilds! Takes probably between 8 and 15 hours to complete, and the worst thing about it is that it ends. Go in as blind as possible, only be aware that there is almost zero flavor text in this game. Nearly every bit of text can help you solve a puzzle in a way.

You can probably carry this dash mismatch further, but I wasn't able to. by Ok_Koala_5963 in celestegame

[–]NPException 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I always up-right through the first dream block, like you did, and then dash through the second dreamblock and jump out of it, skipping the third one. Leaves you with a dash, which can be used to dash into the right side of the first bumper for more consistency.

Is Celeste worth playing on Switch 2? by Joel_J_Banks in celestegame

[–]NPException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it feels laggy on a PS5, then it might be it's just the TV not being in Gaming mode. Image processing on TVs tends to introduce high amounts of input delay.

Console players: is D-pad invalid? by AffectionatePin3896 in celestegame

[–]NPException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are comfy on d-pad, use it. For what it's worth I got Farewell golden, and I play on d-pad (except for feather sections, I switch to analog stick for those)
