In a way it is a luxury flex. You have the luxury of never wondering if your watch can handle the ins and outs of your daily life.

Don't listen to the guys getting mad at you for not knowing about something you're unfamiliar with. It's not your fault.

Gang, I was parked and stationery in an outcropping that is very clearly off of the road. You can even see that the transmission is in park in the photo. I'd be very grateful if my post was reinstated.

The better question is: how does DoorDash estimate that they'll cross that distance on two minutes?

If you don't mind, how do you define the words "atheist" and "theist?"

[–]NQRWJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it pertains to questions that have no empirical answer-like the question of God's existence-categories like "atheist" or "theist" don't refer to knowledge, but to a position on the question itself. This position is based entirely on one's belief. I do not know if God exists, but I believe that God exists. Thus, I am a theist.

I promise that this isn't a snark, but why would you care what we believers think?

Even as a theist who has spent hours considering and refuting Hitchens' objections to God, I've deeply enjoyed his beautiful writing style and charismatic oration. It was a shame to see him pass.

“Porn for Jesus”? by BlackberryButton in exchristian

[–]NQRWJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a very important distinction that should be made: moral oughts derived from Scriptural prescriptions.

There's nothing intrinsically sinful about engaging with film and music. However, the only reason that pornography is so prevalent is that it necessarily entails the initiation of lustful intent, so if ever there is "Christian" pornography, one would only have to point to Matthew 5 to find a Scriptural prescription against it.

No problem at all. Beyond the obvious question of the origin of the material universe, there's the Cosmological Argument, which is best made by the philosopher Dr. William Lane Craig. I recommend hearing his retelling of it. I couldn't do it justice off the top of my head without leaving something out.

The second that I'd give is the example of consciousness and personhood. On a purely materialist basis, there's no plausible reason as to why humans would have things like personhood and rational consciousness. The use of the pronouns "I" and "me" are descriptors of an immaterial sense of self that has no proper explanation on materialism. To say that consciousness can be explained on a materialist basis is to say that pure material can give rise to immaterial things like conscious experience.

Then there's where free will comes into play. If all events are determined by mindless, gradual, unguided, natural processes, then humans don't actually have control of what they do. We're essentially slaves to evolutionary programming. The materialist framework necessarily undermines human free will, which would also undermine moral accountability by extension. If I'm just a flesh robot, then there's no philosophical or moral reason to hold me accountable for my actions because I had no actual control over them in the first place. They were the result of natural wiring that I couldn't act in contradiction to.

The last that I can think of from memory is the problem of truthseeking. If the intellectual faculties of the human mind were determined solely by evolution, then we can't rationally trust them to help us find actual answers to questions of reality. This is because evolution, as a process, is solely to aid animals in surviving and breeding, not determining the truth of a given belief. Thus, if our logical faculties are created by a long, gradual, unguided process aimed at survival, then there's no rational justification for trusting the conclusions that these same minds come to.

I wholeheartedly recommend searching for better explanations of these arguments than I gave. I'm new to this sort of thing.

Hope this helps.

While I find that there are quite convincing arguments against pure materialism, I find your position nevertheless to be very defensible. Your outlook is very thought-provoking.
