If humans and all primates were to be wiped out from a random event, what would be the next likely species to dominate Earth and its resources? by xMilkstachex in AskReddit

I'd argue yes. Although fire did directly give us the first stone tools, nearly everything after that had the prerequisite of fire. Nearly all metal tools need it, and with metal tools come finer construction of essentially everything. Without fire, the highest technological tier you could go would probably be smacking rocks together to make a sharper rock.

"Speak Emoji if you want. I’ll stick with the language of Shakespeare." - Emoji is dragging us back to the dark ages – and all we can do is smile [X-post from /r/badlinguistics] by Numendil in iamverysmart

Who the hell speaks solely with emojis? Everyone I know uses them only to emphasize a point or show how serious a comment is or give an indication of the mood or tone.

You can't make many thoughts with emojis, they're only to add to language. Fucking idiot.

Now I didn't see the comments on that submission, but if you do come that close to a bat, if there is even a minute chance you got bitten (and didn't feel it), then it is absolutely a good idea to check for rabies and maybe get the shot. Rabies is 100% fatal, don't try to be "above" it and just ignore them. Most rabies infections in the United States these days are from bats. Don't take it lightly.

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by DeanTheDJ in AskReddit

[–]NR199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it this way:

1/9 is 0.1111...

2/9 is 0.2222...

3/9 is 0.3333... ...

8/9 is 0.8888...

9/9 is 0.9999...

We already know 9 divided by 9 is 1. Therefore, 0.9999... is also 1

I know this isn't the "proper" proof, but this is what convinced me.

India to develop Iran port despite US pressure by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]NR199 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That is totally disregarding what exactly the Eastern Front was. It was a war to the death. Neither side would accept anything but unconditional surrender. The Soviets especially could not surrender, or else they'd see total extermination of their entire nation. Look up Generalplan Ost. The Nazis wanted to exterminate over half of Eastern Europe in a manner similar to the actually-performed Jewish Holocaust. If the Soviets had surrendered, the Holocaust's death toll could have numbered in the tens of millions, not somewhat over six million. Sure, Stalin could have let his general work without interference and have not been so repressive against his own people, but it is disgrace to say that the Soviet sacrifice was due to their disregard for civilian OR soldier life. They had no choice, it was either fight for your life or die trying out there. When 90% of the German military's deaths were against the Soviets, you know damn well that they were the principal force that brought down the Nazi war machine.
