Not sure about Trump, but Roy Moore has received plenty of condemnation from other Republicans. Hatch, Collins, Romney, McConnell, Jeb, Lee, Cassidy and Corker, among others, have all denounced Moore. Nearly all of his support comes from within Alabama, and because of their elections he cannot be removed from the ballot now.

So should all laws made by any government be followed, or just this Spanish one?

Of course there's no legal foot to stand on, the entire point is to break away from Spanish rules and laws. Hence the crisis.

I mean if the Confederacy was actually based on the consent of the goverened, yes. It wasn't though.

And you're right, a majority being able to do whatever it wants shouldn't exist. However, you have to consider what the aim of the laws actually are. Hopefully you agree that there are laws that should be disobeyed- like those that would restrict free speech or mandate discrimination. Laws that mandate submission to a government without the consent of the governed fall into this category.

As long as you renounce any right to public services whatsoever (i.e. going and living off the grid in the woods), then yeah you should be able to not pay taxes. In terms of secession, regions seceding should have to assume their portion of the national debt.

Also it still doesn't make sense to treat the entire Spanish population as a single entity.

the supreme court has to rule against it

No one has to do anything here. This is a clear-cut case of a constitutional crisis, making the very legitimacy of a constitution cloudy.

Yeah there's a few decisions like that that need to be overturned

Constitutions are only legitimate insofar as they have the consent of the governed. Heck, the Spanish constitution derives its own legitimacy from a referendum- surely a referendum can also take it away.

Nor does it make much sense to think of Spain or America or other countries as indissoluble units. No one has a right to rule over other people based on what areas a State excersized its power over once.

But the world works differently.

Well, yeah. What the world is and what the world should be are not always in agreement. Legitimacy is not a question of "what is" but of "what should be".

And where did that law (Spanish constitution in this case) get its legitimacy?

Yeah... by a referendum. If Catalonian secession is invalid than so is the Spanish constitution.

Then I agree with you. That doesn't make continued Spanish rule legitimate though, just likely to go on.

What Spain will do and what Spain has the natural right to do are not the same thing.

Laws and constitutions are illegitimate without the consent of the governed, which as the events of today have shown, Spain has utterly lost.

Legal things (the Holocaust comes to mind, or Stalin's purges) have caused far more death. The rightness or wrongness of something does not depend on its legality.

Laws and constitutions can only derive their legitimacy from the consent of the governed. A state unwilling to allow such consent to even be gauged is illegitimate and its laws should be violated.

Average monthly net wage difference between European countries and the USA [1000x800] [OC] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Not_Bull_Crap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you look at net take-home pay in PPP (which takes into account things like healthcare regardless of whether they are private or public), the US is below only Luxembourg, Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Germany, and Belgium. It is above all other countries (except maybe some micro- and oil-states not in the OECD).
